The best potato soup I ever ate was Baked Potato Soup. Delicious. Milk, butter, baked potatoes, bacon and simmer, onions if you want, then right before serving you serve it add in cheese and sour cream. It's very rich so we don't have it often but it's very good. We add the baked potato with peeling but you can do it any way you like.

    hugs,

    Annie

Oh and the bacon is optional but i can't think it would taste nearly as good without it. I thought i'd better edit after all the talk of eating right.

OK, I'm just back from a lovely date and, believe it or not, I was eager to get on here and join in (is that pathetic?)!

I would encourage anyone who wants to change some habits in an effort to not only lose weight and get healthier, but to live a longer, quality life, to pick up Dr. Oz's book, You Staying Young: The Owner's Manual for Extending Your Warranty. He uses a large city as metaphor for our body and suggests ways to enhance the stronger characteristics and to counteract the negative things (even our genes!). I heard him on Oprah insist that "there is no reason that anyone who is in reasonable health shouldn't expect to live to over 100 years of age".....niiiiiiiice!!!!

As for water, I have read various opinions on whether it needs to be pure and, if so, in what quantities. It seems that most experts say that flavored water is fine, but watch the excessive chemicals. One thing I've been doing is fixing up a few pitchers of iced green tea (I like the rasberry-flavored) and keeping them in the fridge. I've been using Splenda to sweeten it, but am trying to get used to using just honey. The only trouble is that I need almost an entire bottle of honey to get it sweet enough! Ugh!

Moose burger? Moose chili? I'll take my Boca Burger any day!!!!! (I'm such a chicken!).

Yay! on the flavored water.  I can do that then.  I will have to get that book to read.

So, did anyone try the potato soup today?  How did it turn out for you?

I'm making the soup as soon as I get my lazy self to the grocery store to buy the ingredients!

I like green tea and can drink it without sweetening, so that sounds like a good thing to have on hand.  That book sounds really good.  My dad told me that we should make our health an obsession.  I think he heard it on the news.  He was drilling it into me while I was visiting them.

I won't be making the soup. I like when other people make it for me. I will however warm it up. I have a friend who has one of those home based business' that makes meals for family's for a fee. For $16 a meal she will make it ready for freezer storage. The meals easily feed 5 or 6 people. The corn/potato chowder was a huge hit with my family. Especially with the cheddar biscuits you make with it.

I have really been eating everything I want since Thanksgiving. I do this every year. It is like some weird kind of ritual I go through. So my ritual is coming to an end again. Back to healthy eating. I always feel better when I eat right anyway. Last year it took me way to long to get over my ritual but I had just finished chemo.

    BMD --

Is your friend close to eastern Pa?  I could use a service like that lately.  Like you I've been eating what I want, when I want since Thanksgiving.  I'm starting to feel quite guilty, I'm up at least 5 lbs. since the fall (and end of chemo) and am looking forward to getting back in the swing of things in the New Year.

Speaking of which, here's hoping everybody enjoys a New Year's Eve to their liking.  2008 will be a better year, I just know it.

    Hey Twink

I'm here but trying to get my fanny in gear to go brave the mall and run a few errands.  I sure hope the after Christmas sale crowd/returns rush is over.   That's really annoying when you only need to get regular non-Christmas related stuff.

Hey Always, me too...getting ready to head to the mall later today.  I'm sure it'll be a zoo but I don't mind zoning out and strolling around.  I don't have to be there, maybe that's the difference.  We're going to spend a quiet NY's Eve at home snacking, drinking, watching movies and/or playing board games.  I'm going to make a big casserole dish of mac and cheese.  Not very fancy but I feel like comfort food today.  That's the plan now anyway.  Good luck on your outing... may the crowds be civilized.

Well, all I can say is that with all that moose chilli, your septic tanks better be working!

Exercise is good...now I need to put that thought into my brain and then act on it! I do, actually. I am a walker..I walk the beach. But lately it's been cold and windy on the beach so I've been trying to ride my exercycle.

I went shopping today and felt fat. Most of those who were shopping were young skinny girls and then there was me. I'm not overweight. I've just got a more mature figure! Tongue out

HAPPY HAPPY NEW YEAR! May we all have a very healthy new year, no matter WHAT we eat!!!!

    Hi all,

OK, is it just me or was anyone else just a little curious how Marin's 'lovely date' went? Just a quick mention, and it was on to Dr OZ, water, and moose chili...not that the information on Dr. OZ's book isn't interesting...but come on!!!! I do plan to get that book today...I too will brave the shopping scene Always Hope and Twink ...and may the crowds be civilized is a great Star Warsian motto... It will be my first adventure driving since surgery...pray for everyone else on the road ;-).

RavDeb- the sun is shining...I am so taking my VDW today. The beach sounds like a peaceful place to walk...I grew up in the Santa Cruz area, and then moved up to Lake Tahoe in junior high...Tahoe was a beautiful place to walk as well.

OK, I'm off to walk and then take myself shopping.

    Happy New Year Ladies,

Love the "no deer" story.  Sitting here watching dvds since nothing on tv is good.  A couple years ago for Christmas my kids gave me a Rick Springfield (Dr. Noah Drake from General Hospital) dvd since I have his audio tapes.  This is copywrited 1985 and the clothes are hilarious.  I can't believe we dressed like that.

Well, I'm finally going to get the ingredients for the soup.  I plan to make it tomorrow in the crock pot and have a relaxing day lounging at home.  We finally got the tree down, but the house still looks messy.  Too many people home right now.  Things will get back to normal when dd goes back to school. DS is looking to move out in the somewhat near future, we'll see how that goes.

I loved Rick Springfield!  Didn't he have a movie in the 80s?  I don't remember what it was, but my roommate and I went just to see him.

I'm back from my walk...haven't braved shopping yet...a beautiful day. I was inspired to write a poem for the New Year ladies...Happy New Year!

After much rain, the sun is shining

on this final day of twenty-07,

and I think of the many dear ones

    watching over us from heaven.

Massive pearly gates and golden-winged angels

isn’t exactly what I imagine this place,

but rather where souls give dissertations,

accounting for their time in this Earthbound space.

    I imagine much hearty laughter

as they recognize their many mistakes,

and the futile agonizing they’d done

causing their hearts to physically ache.

I try to listen for my loved ones messages,

but sometimes the mundane gets in the way

    screaming over their persistent whispers,

making it difficult to always hear what they say.

The message that always comes through though,

no matter how loud the man-made clatter,

is the truth we are all of one human race,

and acting with love is all that matters.

It matters not what religion we hold dear,

nor what political party we call our own,

for we can all agree we bleed the same,

and will reap what we each have sown.

So as I go into this newest of years,

that message kept near to my heart.

I will aspire to treat all with love,

knowing of this universe, we are all a part.

    Your SIS(Sister In Survival)

Well, I did it!  I just got back from signing up at the community center for a month.  I also picked up their class schedule and think I might give Beginner Step a try.  They have a class in the evenings once a week.  I sure hope there are other old, fat ladies in the class besides me.

Nice, Kimberly! Another work of art!

Good for you, AlwaysHope!! I teach all levels of step, from beginner to advanced double step and I can assure you that it's the "old ladies" who end up the best at it and the most dedicated because they have patience and persistence AND because they're not afraid to look a bit awkward until they catch on. So ENJOY!!!!!

I nominate Kimberly Poet Laureate of bc.org!  Thanks for sharing.

Enjoy your class, Always...what a great start to the new year!

In the spirit of doing something totally new, and out of character, I'm considering taking scuba lessons in the spring.  The guy who teaches next door to me is a certified instructor, so I think I may take the plunge...literally.  Any divers here?  I've snorkeled before and loved it.

In the new year, I'd like to be a FitChik, too, Marin.  Working on it!

    Enjoy your evening, all...stay safe!

What an amazing poem.  It really moved me and it felt so Positive!

    Thank you.

Lynn, I'm a certified diver.  Started over 20 years ago.  Didn't think I could do it since I felt claustrophobic in the altitude chambers when I was a flight nurse.  but I did it!  It is an amazing sport.

I've only been down in the islands, so much to see there.  I haven't felt any need to go in lakes and pits, even with cars and such to ck out.

I'm really spoiled since I did most of my diving in Grand Cayman, which has about the top water in the world and great shore diving to see such colorful creatures.

Hope you'll go for the cert, you'll find ways to vacation in the good diving spots around the world.

    Hi, Iodine--

I'm a spoiled snorkler...I've only done it at the Great Barrier Reef twice, and in Thailand.  Gorgeous spots...diving certification would give me a great excuse to go back to those places before I retire to FL.  I'm going to do it...have to get in better shape before spring, though.  Wish me luck...

Such a lovely New Years Day...napping, reading, listening to Yo Yo Ma on the ipod.  I could get used to this!

Okay...enough of this.  Let's hear some more septic tank stories!  I think my car (a tiny Suzuki clown car), when I'm finished with it, would make a perfect tank for some deserving person. :-)

Off to stirfry some veggies to eat w/ my turkey chili.  Perfect chili weather here...it's been snowing off and on all day.

Last thought...Go Gators!  I have to set my alarm for 3 a.m. to see their last game vs. Michigan.  Getting ready to mourn the end of the college football season...sigh.  Any other fans out there?

I've never snorkled or anything like that but I've seen it on TV and it looks like so much fun.  Lynn, good luck and I think you should go for it.  Here's to new adventures in 2008!

I don't have any septic stories here.  Even though I live in an economically poor southern state, I've always lived in the city with sewer utilities.  I'm thinking that was a good thing.  No buried cars in my yard and never had to deal with an outhouse.  :)

Well, the new year is here!  2007 was a really good year for me and I'm looking forward to 2008 with alot of optimism.  Time to start gathering up all that documentation for tax time.  I'm such a slug.  Every year I label a file folder to put all the tax docs in as I go along and as usual I never use it.  Time to start digging through all these piles of junk mail and other stuff.

    This new year I resolve:

To lose at least 5 pounds and keep it off

    To exercise more

To get rid of clutter in my home and only buy what I need

To no longer tolerate deceit or disloyalty from people who would call themselves my friend (life is too short to waste on shallow people)

    To value true friends more

    To get more sleep

To procrastinate less (starting on this first thing tomorrow)

    To take more risks

To knit a sweater and wear it at least once

To learn to knit socks (Sheri, gonna be callin you lots)

To get out of the house more and enjoy the fresh air and sun

I've snorkled and loved it but haven't done it in a while.  It was mostly in Okinawa and was beautiful. No sharks either as they weren't indigenous to the area.

I will also miss the college football season (will be watching Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl today) but have women's college basketball to help me get through til next season.  They play a much more pure game.

New Years resolution (don't usually make them but this one came to me and I liked it)....... To go back to the way it used to be and Sunday was a day of rest.  Doesn't mean I won't do laundry but I'm going to quit shopping and eating at restaurants and thus causing others to work because I am there.  I know, I know....it won't change the world but no one seems to get that day of rest anymore and I kinda miss the stores being closed and spending time with family and friends instead of running all over town trying to get more "stuff".

Must be the New Year's elf in my head.

Snorkeling...we used to snorkel in the Red Sea in southern Israel. We had snorkeling equipment...us and the kids when they were little. And we snorkeled in the Sinai in Egypt, too. And then...the kids were older which means I was older and I went out snorkeling with them. The waves were strong that day and I COULD NOT GET BACK TO SHORE! I was with two of my kids and dh and middle kid who was about 16 or 17 at the time were sitting on the beach. My kids who were with me...one was about 19 or 20 and the other about 13, couldn't help me and instead were LAUGHING AT ME! I then got a cramp in my leg and was in pain and getting scared. My middle son saw me and came swimming out to me, pulled me back to shore and went back to sit in the sun while I pulled myself up onto the pier. Last time I snorkeled!

Jas, I like your resolutions, but I'm going to up the weight loss on mine to 10 lbs. I weighed 214 at my last weight check after chemo and have gotten below 200 only once since then.  I now hover around 205, so I plan to get below and stay below 200 this year.  I know that doesn't sound like much, but it will be a personal accomplishment.

I went shopping for the soup ingredients yesterday and left my list in the car, so instead of going back to get it I decided to use my (faulty) memory.  I couldn't remember if it was chicken or beef broth, so I bought both.  I couldn't remember which pioneer gravy mix, so I bought 2, and I think I still bought the wrong one.  And best of all, I forgot to buy the hashbrowns!  Chemo brained again.  Luckily my dh had to stop at the store after work on his way home so I asked him to pick up the hashbrowns.  I'm going to make it anyway, we'll see how it turns out!  I'm still too lazy to go back to the store and get the other gravy mixWink.

Snorkling and scuba diving sound like such fun, but I am also claustrophobic.  I love swimming, though.  I keep saying I'm going to join the wellness center here just to use the pool.  We have a community pool in the summer and I'm there just about every day.  I try walking, but I poop out way too fast.

Okay, here we go--2008 is going to be GREAT!

HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!!!! I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable one...

I went to my dd's for a bon fire party....roasted hotdogs (well kind of...my stick burned in two so my doggie fell in the fire)...but the marshmellows were yummy!!!!!

It seems most of here have children so since we seem to be running out of septic tank stories..........

What is the funniest story you all have about one of your kids???

    Mine:

I was out working in the yard one day when my daughter was in about 1st grade in school, she came home one day, went straight to her room and came immediately back outside...when I looked up she was standing on the deck dumping out her gold fish bowl.....I thought she was cleaning it, but nope.....they were studying water at school that day and when the teacher explained drowning & suffocation to the kids she took it to mean that her gold fish were suffocating!!!!!! Well, poor Charlie lived through the experience but it took hours to explain and make her understand there is a difference between fish and humans......

Hope everyone has an enjoyable day!!!

    Jule

PS-I have never dived but do snorkel every summer for work but that is only in the local rivers here...I would love to at least snorkel in some the tropics.....I have always said I would like to try diving I too am claustrophobic so not sure about it just yet.

    My new years res?

    1) Im one of those nasty smokers and have planned to stop starting on a certain day this week....

    2) Get more excercise, make the time for a walk each day instead of twice a week....

    3) do a couple of things to further my knowledge at work, maybe take a couple of online courses or something.

    4) Last but definately NOT least-spend more time with those I love and care about....this one I put at the bottom of the list but not because it belongs there....I put it there because of the first one on my list!!!! Those I love and care about probably will get short changed until Im over the No Smoking for the first few weeks...not sure they will want to be very close to me during the process anyway Undecided

Good Luck to all of us who have resolutions for 2008!!!!!
