Christmas day...I have a lot to be grateful about...will be going to see the surgeon on Thursday. I am sure they will try to persuade me to take radiation. Contact me through my e-mail if you are interested in the pro's and con's of radiation, in how I came to my decision. I think each person must decide for themselves and feel at peace about their decision.

The last few weeks before surgery I found myself abnormally obessing over the different options. I am going to try not to come back to this site although I am curious to how many of you are faring. I need to get back on track as I've gotten behind in many of my projects. God Bless and take care of yourselves.

Scheduled for lumpectomy 1/14/07.  Diagnosed with DCIS -- presumably non-invasive but time will tell.  Not too concerned about the lumpectomy but not real enthusastic about radiation which I am told definitely should be part of my overall treatment.  Major radiation concern is long term effects.  Can anyone shed any light or offer advice??

Hope your surgery went well and you are up and about.

Well, my surgery was supposed to be outpatient but it changed when I had an asthma attack when I went under anthesia, so I spent the night in the hospital.  I know everyone is different, but, I had no pain to speak of after my surgery/biopsy.  I was sore but that was about it.  My surgeon explained to me what she did to make that happen and I am forever grateful.  I had worse pain out of getting my thyroid removed.  I'm doing rads now, and the only effect I'm having is just being so exhausted..way different that the exhausted I was during chemo.  No problems with my skin yet, but I'm contributing that to doing the castor oil on the skin everyday.  Best of luck.

I haven't been here for a few days. I wasn't coming back but had a couple of questions. I'm healing well but I did notice hard knots where they took out the sintinal nodes. Is this normal?

Second question: If our body produced cancer cells in one place could it be actually be making cancer cells in other parts of our body? never thought about having cancer until now.

My doctor convinced me to at least speak with the radiologist. I agreed and will have a open mind if he can adequately answer troubling questions dealing with side affects.

Why can't women wait to have the radiation done like in the summer when they have more time. I can't believe I'm open to think may I would. Most likely not.

Hope you all are doing well.

Hi Barry,  You said that your mass turned out not to be invasive.  Do you mean then it is DCIS, or are you saying that it was contained in the breast (because your nodes were negative)?  Just curious, because that has a bearing on your treatment choices.  I just want you to be sure to get that answer from your surgeon.

    Your question:

"Second question: If our body produced cancer cells in one place could it be actually be making cancer cells in other parts of our body? never thought about having cancer until now. "

That is a burning question that most of us have when dx'ed.  If your dx is DCIS, then your chance of it being someplace else is much smaller than if it is IDC (invasive).  If it is IDC, the chance of it recurring someplace else is much smaller than if you had positive nodes.  Yes, you could have a new cancer, but it's more likely for you to have a recurrence of this cancer than a new one.

I also had a grade 3 pathology and had lumpectomy and radiation.  There was no doubt for me to do the radiation because for my particular dx it would decrease the odds of local recurrence significantly.   I was also afraid of the SE's, but I'm really glad I did it.  I have no cosmetic evidence of the radiation, and the treatment itself did not debilitate me.

Talk to your surgeon and radiologist and ask the tough questions.  Find out what the benefit for your specific dx is.  Ultimately it will be your decision, but make it with all the information.

    Good luck!
