My TRAM flap reconstruction is scheduled for February 28, 2008! I'd like to know, from others who have had this surgery, any tips you have on sleeping positions, clothing to wear, or not wear, what works, what doesn't, etc. All those things that "first handers" would know, that our doctors forgot to tell us! Any and all tips would be appreciated...

Linda

    Hi Linda and Muffy

I just went through the procedure on 12/4. Diep on both breasts (four and half years after my diagnosis and treatment). Sleep was initially a problem. You have to sleep on your back. I finally found a position that worked. I propped myself up with about four pillows, then elevated my legs with pillows that extended the length of my legs. Finally pillows to rest each of my arms. You may want to check out what is comfortable before the surgery. Also as far as clothing, I picked up loose banded sweat type pants at Costco and I have been living in them every since. You will need sports bras that are not too snug around the elastic band and tops that are big enough to slip on without extending your arms over your head. Button down shirts work. I did not realize that you cannot have caffeine for four weeks following surgery (I miss my coffee and chocolate). So have herbal teas and non-caffeinated beverages. You may want to prepare meals ahead and freeze them. I hope this helps and good luck. The surgery is worth it.

I read Muffy's comment and I must admit...Chemo brain does exist! My surgery is January 28th NOT February 28! Geeezzz! I've been waiting to have this since my Mastectomy in April, you think I'd get it straight. It must be the excitement!

I had a bilateral TRAM on 12/11 and I'm still recouperating.  Be sure to ask for something to help you sleep.  I slept 1 hr at the time while in the hospital.  As for clothes, you want to wear old, soft stuff.  I have to change about 3 times a day due to drainage.  This is a big surgery and really knocked me down.  I know it will be worth it in the end.

The good news is that my big incision doesn't hurt at all nor do my breast.  The musle that get flips is where the pain begins.  I would massage my tummy when I'd get a cramp.  Be sure to stay on top of your pain meds.  My belly button is what has given me the most discomfort.

One last thing, be sure to start a stool softener before your surgery.  The pain meds & muscle relaxors cause severe constipation.

Good luck and hope to hear from you on the other side!
