What's your dosha?
I was watching a Sara Snow episode I had DVR'd and, once agin, became fascinated with the principles of Ayurvedic medicine, an area about which I know little but sense would be very worth exploring. My goals for the new year actually center around becoming more balanced and developing a purer lifestyle. Anyway, Sara was discussing knowing one's dosha which, as I understand it, characterizes your own particular essential tendencies, based on rather existential but earth-based principles. You have an overall dosha which describes your body type, your emotional makeup and your ways of thinking. Then you have a dosha that is more connected to your body and one associated with your mind. Apparently, we each have one or two strong doshas and one that is less so. Okay, so I then started reading online and found this cool, fun website that starts you off with a quiz to determine your doshas. I just love these kinds of quizzes and thought I'd share it with you here. The site has alot of interesting advice and info and you can sign up to receive daily inspirations, a newsletter, etc. Enjoy!

I didn't use the website, but I've gone through the exercise from reading books by Deepak Chopra. I'm kapha predominantly, with .... the one that starts with a v ... second.
I'm not surprised you're a pitta. You are so active, and I'm so envious. I feel like the poster child for a slugfest some days.

My HMO actually had an Ayurvedic doc, but the lifestyle changes he wanted me to make - I'm sure they'd help but they were too hard for me....but really worth thinking about again. He said that all health begins with good digestion, which makes intuitive sense to me. Trying to live according to ayurvedic principles would likely be pretty energizing, but it is complicated, so it seems like seeing a practitioner would be helpful. Mine was Dr. Charles Elder, MD at Kaiser in Portland.

I love Deepak, have all is old books n Ayuverveda, and "Perfect Health", etc.
I know for years that I'm the big, slow poster girl for Kapha.
But I have never seen an "In your mind" test.
So In my mind I am Vata.
And this is SOOOO true!
I'm thrilled.
But feeling totally schitzy!
Think I'll try eating in a Vatta way, because milk (good for Kapha) is TERRIBLE for me.And dry foods arent so inviting...I'll feed my Vatta mind lots of salads(which I normally eat anyway) and hopefully I will attain better(but schizy) balance.

Thanks for the enjoyable website.I have a (Vata) daughter who will also enjoy it.

Joan...Sara Snow is Vatta also and she made a delicious lentil soup to satisfy her dosha. Maybe you should indulge in some homemade soup and whole grain bread?
I'm making veggie curry tomorrow night for my Pitta self!!!!

Hi five to Joan my kapha sister. I've made several adjustments to my eating habits after reading Chopra's books. Warm food is better for us than uncooked raw food, as a general rule (I'm sure there's exceptions). I was eating almonds every day for a while trying to get thing movin on through better, but the flaxseed takes care of that now.
And get this, I pulled out my new container of honey to mix with my flaxseed and yogurt. I looked at many labels last time searching for honey that was as local as possible. The very best I could find was 'product of USA.' Many of them said product of .... and then a list of five different countries. So I went with the USA product, and as I looked at it again, it's a BLEND with corn syrup in it!! Good grief, it escaped my notice that there was anything but honey in my honey. Now I'm on a quest to find honey that's local.

Looks like I am pitta? I have listened to alot of Deepok on tape in the pasts. It does seem complicated to life the complete life that way. Interesting that he says warm foods and other bc homeopaths say raw. Further convinces me we can do our own research and follow our gut.

Althea--the warm (dry) foods is worst, for me, in summertime, when I SO crave salads.This is why I want to eat for my Vata mind, instead of my Kapha body!
LOL not because it will make me FASTER or thinner, but sure is lovely in hot weather!

If that is the best your supermarkets can do, you'll have to buy it in the health food store.
Sometimes farms or orchards produce honey for sale.Any chance of you latching on to this?(Thats REAL local honey)!

I was reading a list of foods for a Pitta and thought..."these are so wrong!" Said I should eat sweet fruits, for example, rather than sour when, actually, I prefer the opposite. But then I checked back and saw that although, overall as well as in my mind/intellect, I'm Pitta, I'm actually strongly Vatta in body. This stuff is more interesting than sun signs! I don't plan to change my whole diet based on it, but will take it into consideration as I try to achieve balance in a number of areas.

Joan, I found it at my grocery store. The biggest letters say Texas honey blend. I thought it meant a blend of clover honey and alfalfa maybe, but no. It never occurred to me there'd be anything but honey in my honey.
Another Ayruveda teaching is to take in each of the six different tastes at each meal. Sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent.

Melody...Maybe it was a temporary glitch on your computer? If not, I'd say either type the url in yourself or google "what's your dosha?" because I just clicked on it again and the site comes right up.
Once you've taken the quiz, btw, the entire site is interesting and full of info and other links!
