symbol suggestions for 6/07 Washington DC

For a poster, not the main logo ......
I know everyone seems to focus on the 40,000 number and that's good but I wonder if there are any totals for bc deaths since say, 1967, or 1900?
Or a picture of people in a stadium filled with 40,000 with a pink X thru it with the year 2006, and another stadium filed with 40,000 pink X, year 2007, etc
People need to see a visual as to what 40,000 is .... How would they feel if one year the whole city of Palm Springs was wiped out, then the next year it would be Auburn, WA, etc
These towns represent 40, 000 in these states:
Palm Springs, CA
Auburn, WA
Concorde, NH
Meridian, MS
Gasden, AL
Fairbanks and Ketchikan, AK
Sun City, AZ
Woonsocket, RI
Henrietta, NY
and so on .... Maybe find notable cities in each state and put them on a map with pink X's

think a pink ribbon on black t-shirts is great and maybe pink bullet marks/buckshot on the back? Cancer is not friendly and it kills, that's why I think the bullet marks.
-
I was thinking about a black tshirt and purchasing pink rope the kind you can buy in any material store and making a noose out of it that way there is no problem with graphics and different sizing, the amounts, etc. This way everyone can buy there own black tshirt and just adde the noose for the march. On signs we could have the information we want people to understand, the number of women who have died the number the number of women who will die of this disease in the next 10 years etc.Pearl

" I love Shepgirls picture with Shel38's "we're dying to hear what you are doing for a cure"
Shepgirls graphic is powerful. Pink bc sister against hooded death calling added to by Shel38's remark as above would be unforgettably visual. The newspapers might eat the picture up! Be sure to think about copyrighting issues now.
I have contact with the head of DC Transportation. When things are more settled as to date, location etc, we should definitely get him on board. Or even before to let him give us D.C. guidelines, Bin?
This is amazingly courageous!

The Funky Winkerbean guy is Tom Batiuk, he lives here in the Cleveland area or is from here. I'll see what I can do. "We're Dying for a Cure" sounds like a good T-Shirt to me; I think we should stay away from the noose idea only because of recent incidents where nooses have been left as a racially-motivated threat. The pink robbon with black border or black loop at the toop is great. I also think contacting Komen for the Cure and asking them to make make something along these lines available to walkers in their events would be good.
-
Would love to be able to contact Robin Roberts & Elizabeth Edwards to join us. Maybe I'll work on that. Or does anyone have any connections out there??

Hey Gals and Marchers,
I don't know where to post this cause we're all spread out!!
But, I just got off the phone with the permit people in DC. They are checking on dates for Sat. and Sun.'s in May and June, except Memorial weekend and Flag Day.
I looked at the map and chose the option of marching down Constitution Ave from VietNam Memorial down past the big thing that looks like a phallic symbol. It's about 3/4 mile. The other option was Lafayette park, which is on the completely opposite side of the White House. Gotta go, she just called me back

Hi all. I have been reading the posts on the proposed march with interest. I am a mom of little ones and live many hours away, so I am not sure if I will be able to go, although I'd love to be there. This morning as I was getting dressed, I thought of how if I did go, I'd be tempted to be topless-- I had a bilateral mast with no recon. I was thinking a line of topless mastectomy women would be a powerful visual. then i thought... maybe that's not everyone's cup of tea. But maybe for posters... how about the torso of someone with bilateral mast? Perpaps partially in shadow. A picture that's somewhat tasteful/respectful but poingnant. Maybe an existing image of a woman's torso could be manipulated to appear to have had a mast by one of the graphics people we are hearing from or about (then we don't have to try to find someone willing to be the person on the poster). And my idea for the slogan on the poster is "What we're missing is the CURE."
Keep up the great work, ladies. Angie
P.S. I like the idea of the pink ribbon with the black band across the loop and the number of those lost either on the black band or perhaps underneath the ribbon itself.
-
Okay,
Here's what I found out ...
ALL the dates for permits for the govt. parks are filled through 2008 because it's an election year.
The only other possibility is to call the City of DC and see about getting a permit to walk on the north side of Constitution Ave (street), which the City owns. The Mall park is on the opposite side of the street and we wouldn't be allowed to walk on that side. The City also owns the street between the White House and Lafayette Park, but not the Park. All the parks are taken because of the election year.
Do you want me to call the City of DC and see about those two street options?
-
Bren,
Once again my heart just broke. Blasted elections............
I say go for it, We could use it to our advantage......... let the powers that be know we've been relegated to the other streets because of the elections, etc.

I just did some checking ... there is a little bit of wiggle room in the regulations! If under 25 people we don't need a permit and if we don't call it a memorial. We might be able to get away with it if we just wear the t-shirts, happen to show up in the same general vicinity or maybe in a couple of different locations in the park. We could have groups of 25 spread out all over the park!!!!
What do you think?
-
I have had a bilat mast and I thought of marching topless too...
I actually asked a lawyer if they thought it would be against the law too be in public topless....she said she thought it would be fine. The laws almost all say something about showing sexual body parts...which I no longer have. I don't know if i would really be brave enough to bare it all, but it would be a powerful image....

Although I think it's a wonderful idea to march topless - I think the purpose of this gathering/march is remember the fallen sisters that have fought so bravely. Maybe we should have 2 marches - one for our sisters while wearing black t-shirts with a pink ribbon and a second one wearing white t-shirts with a pink ribbon torn in two (side to side or top to bottom) to symbolize the removal of our breast(s) because of this disease.
Take Care

Trish-
Don't sweat it...I promise to keep my clothes on **grin**
Actually, I may only be able to be there in spirit. I looked at the cost of a plane ticket last night and it was over $800.00! That is just not going to happen this summer.
I do think that before too long, you guys might want to define exactly what the purpose or aim of your march is....it seems like maybe folks have different ideas. Without a firmly stated goal, a mission statement maybe, you may have people headed in different directions.
Are you looking to honor the sisters we have lost? Are we trying to stir the country into the same type of anger we feel when yet another woman dies? Are l we asking the congress or the white house to change a specific policy? Are we asking for more federal funding? What outcome would make you happy? What result do you want?
All of those things are possible, but which is your focus?
Just a thought.....

You've done so much in so short a period of time. The selection of a site is obviously tough.
Perhaps the D.C. government would offer much, maybe linking the closed US Government park permits to the similar closure to DC residents right to vote in an election year. Representative Norton and local state senators who have fought for the right to vote may be empathic to any similar march for breast cancer victim rights, and fallen angels, and on their turf.
Here is the email to a gentleman who has the Mayors ear and knows the DC laws regarding DC roads/transportation. He is a fine man, and may help you tremendously should you wish to use the north side of Constitution. Perhaps too he knows DC parks.
Email: Erik.Linden@dc.gov
I'm not suggesting a joint venture, just a manner of approach toward empathic ears, and getting high enough into city government for answers.
Good luck.

Deb,
My original idea was a Memorial March to the fallen 40,910. That was it .. that's how this all started. A Memorial, no fundraising, no celebrities, no foundations asking for money, just sisters marching hand in hand as a Memorial to the fallen 40,910. To bring awareness to the 787 mothers, sisters, wives and daughters who die each week from this disease. Hopefully, someone would take notice. For me, the ultimate goal was to focus on getting money to research for a cure!! That was my dream. Instead of giving to foundations, give directly to research, i.e., Huntsmans in Utah, Wake Forest in NC., etc.
Did that help clarify? I know, in all the excitement, we're all over the place with ideas, and all over the threads right now.
Do you have some ideas and can you help coordinate? Can you help with a mission statement to pull us all together? You have a way with words ....
Love you lots,
Brenda

You know who we need ... we need Layne from the DCIS thread. I happen to know she works in DC. Somebody go get Layne. I need to email her. I'm about 2 weeks past talking to her!!! She's a PR expect!!
Okay, I'm off to find Layne.
Somebody send out the posseeeeee ...
PS - Thanks for the info and the email address. I'll look into it tomorrow when I get home from mammo's. I have to try to get some work done, but I've been obsessing about my first post tx mammo and exam all day. Yikes.

I lean towards black.
Bimmer wants to help in any way I can. Will participate, will attend.
What can I do?
-
Hi, Bimmer. We love you.
I would suggest that we get a website up--this site should include dates, times, registration info, preferred hotels that offer discounts, where the walk starts/ends, t-shirt ordering info......pretty much like any other non-profit walk or event is organized. That way, we can REALLY branch out-register with search engines and reach more than just the passionate people on this website.
Any thoughts on this? I'd be glad to help in any way I can.
Hugs,
Geeta
-

I heard from Melissa and she is contacting the techs to set up a separate forum for our march!!!
Yehaa!!! This is great news!!
Thanks Melissa ... YOU ROCK!!
Geeta, the idea of a separate website is great, but first I recommend we get all of our ducks in order, then create the website with the information ready to be loaded. We can link it from here for easy access.
Gotta run.

This comment is from one of the key members of the Metastatic Breast Cancer Network:
NO black ribbon and NO focus on death. In fact, no ribbon at all. The slogan "We're dying to hear what you are doing for a cure" is clever... and how about changing it to "We're dying to hear what you are doing to keep us alive". I suggest that as metastatic women, we move the focus to treatments to keep us alive and leave the cure focus to primary breast cancer people. I think the suggestion from Trish on 12/18 for 40,190 in a circle with a slash through it is terrific because it will stop people and make them think and ask what this means and they will then learn about metatatic breast cancer. ... and that is what we want.... heightened awareness.
-
I am very excited with the idea! But there is something I do not quite know: those over 40,000 women dying of BC every year: is this in the States, or worldwide?
Thank you, and forgive me for a probably stupid question.
-
Bren, Great work!!!! And thanks a bunch Melissa!!! Yippee!!! Now we have a starting off place.
Bren - I pm'd you.

This brain storming is good! I do like the rose, but a little too dark - maybe some sprits or outline of pink in it.

I'll plan to be there and want to participate however I can...
