March on Washington June 2008

Ladies,
There is a group of us on the boards that are seriously considering a march on Washington sometime in June 2008 to honor the over 40,000 men & women that die from this dreaded disease every year.
It will not be a fund raiser, and we really do not want any corporate sponsorship either. All we want to do is fill the Mall with survivors and/or their families and let Congress, the US and the world know how many angels there are every year and the fact that we are mad as hell and we're not going to take it anymore.
So my question is, ARE YOU IN???
Please let us know so we can have an idea if this is doable.
Thanks,
Valerie

Valerie,
Thanks for creating this thread. We really needed to have a central place for all our information. This is what we have so far.
We already have lots of volunteers.
I'll find out what dates are available in June and if we'll be in front of the White House or the Mall. I will send in the application for the permit along with my credit card for the $50.
Tender lives right by DC and has volunteered her home as a base for putting together signs, plans, coordinating of times, etc.
We can look into cafepress.com for designing and getting our t-shirts and other things for the memorial. Maybe something like a black t, with "In Memory Of 40,910" written in pink on the back with the pink ribbon on the front. Something that will raise questions. All ideas are welcome.
More volunteers will be needed as soon as we get more info. We'll need to spread the word all across the U.S., not just on bco!!!
I hope we can make this dream come true.
Love,
Brenda

Valerie,
Do you have a specific date in mind? I would need to know more particulars before I could make a firm commitment. Keep us posted.

Cherryl,
I'm calling DC tomorrow to check on Saturdays in June. I'll post tomorrow with a list of days available.

I think somehow we need to focus on that it is 40,000+ dying women leaving grief behind every single year. This year, last year, next year and the next. We are dying out here - across the country. In every senator's and congressman's constituency there are women suffering and doctors saying "I'm sorry, there's nothing more we can do."
This is bigger than BC.org

May I add that it's very hot and humid in Washington in the month of June.
-
Count me in! I'll do whatever you need!!
-
Have the Komen women been invited in on this? They're good at rallying.
I love the black shirt idea, and the fact it's not about October.
In one post on the "Recurrence" board someone mentioned the idea of starting this march at the Vietnam War Memorial and linking it with the number of those killed in Nam (which is close to our yearly total!) I like that idea because it says, essentially, "So if you're not going to finance a cure, then are you at least going to build us a memorial?"
Thanks for the post, and for the momentum. What an eye-opener this could be!

A good idea indeed.
Associated with the War Memorial is a very good idea. Can it also be connected to environmental issues in some way? Progress that kills?
Is it possible to march in silence...at least for a significant period? Silence can be deafening.
If you share the details to women's clubs ... an example... Federation of American Women's Clubs Overseas (FAWCO) that is non political, very organized to disseminate useful information .... or go the route of hospital/clinic bulletin boards, blogs, etc. I'm sure you've thought of all of this.
The Komen Race is usually May in Rome...and it's very warm then...and draining for those of us not in such great shape....not humid though.
I don't know if I can get back there at that time, I have family arriving here until early June...but if it's possible, I'd like to be there.
Shirley is right .. the heat and humidity might deter people who otherwise might want to be there...I'm thinking to those who can not ambulate so easily. But no matter when .... it will always be something
Best wishes for your venture ... -
I'm glad this thread got put together. You ladies are great!
I so want to be in on this. I need to be in the States in August. I'll see what I can do about it, though. I want to be there.
I have connections with a community near DC (in Virginia) and some clergy who maybe could help bring people and support this.
I could at least get them to spread the information in their email newsletters and ask the clergy to speak to their congregations about this.
So, keep me posted though I'll be following this.
This is very exciting!
Question: Does it need to be on a Saturday? Is this because it's not a workday? Could it be on a Sunday as well? Just a thought....
-
I agree with you in some ways, alicesuzy, but...
I think we need to make an impact in Washington DC, right there where the congress is and where they make decisions as to where money goes and why they need to get their priorities straight.
Other countries follow what happens in the United States. When it comes to research and treatments for breast cancer, we, in Israel, follow the American Cancer Society guidelines (which is why it was so darn hard for me to get Taxol with my node negative status despite my triple neg tumor in 2005).
Therefore, I'm still convinced that we need to march in DC. And I'd like to see ACS there as well. And people from all over the US. It's important to make a strong impact all at once, I think.
-
Alicesuzy, there already is one set up for this type of thread. There is a forum called: Walks, Runs and other Fundraising events.
However, not many people travel to that forum. What I wonder, and maybe Fumi can answer, is : Can there be a way to have a thread "mirrored"? What I mean is that if this thread would be in the correct forum under Walks, so those interested in walks would see it and then say it was here in the vastly read section, could they be the same thread. If you post here, it automatically updates the other and vice versa.
This is not a "moving on" topic since it doesn't have to do with getting on with the rest of your life but I see why it was posted here most people post here if its not directly related to treatment.
-
I think the idea is that this is NOT a fundraiser nor a walk. The walks have become centered on fun and have made the whole thing look pink and "in". I thought the idea was to get away from that and make it a memorial for those who have died and to show America and our politicians that bc is not only about getting mammos but getting a cure so that over 40,000 americans won't die yearly from this disease. My point being that this should be separate from the forum on walks and special events.
I do want to say that I'm not against the walks. I sounded like I was. I'm not. Those are good. Just that this something else.
I agree with you alicesuzy...focal point in DC and noticeable support in other cities. Good idea. I like that. We could get, for example, ABC news in Chicago to do something, and so on...
-
Maybe they should change the name of that forum to: Calls to Action ... then walks, runs, fundraiser, memorials, legislation appeals, bills, petitions, letters to senators, governors and the like could all be organized under one forum rather than creating a whole new forum. Just my 2 cents ... it's hard to navigate this already overloaded board.
-
Hi Ladies,
Thanks so much for all your interest and ideas. I am so overwhelmed by the response. Valerie posted this msg in a number of spots in the hopes of getting some idea of how many would be interested in a Memorial march in Washington.
I'm working on trying to get our own heading for a "Memorial March in DC 2008" created. I've been in touch with Melissa and am waiting on a followup from her. That way we'll have one location for all the information and current updates. I realize we're spread out all over the boards right now and need to get coordinated into one location.
I'll let everyone know as soon as we get one place set up.
Thanks everybody.

I am so impressed with everyones great ideas, and I think we should get thousands of people involved. This is so much bigger than b.corg. We can contact every cancer community-komen, ysc, american cancer society-- I have connections to many of those communities.
Also, I would send out a mass email/post from my web site www.breastreconstruction.org and that would another couple of hundred.
Has there ever been a march for breast cancer?
-
I don't recall a march per se for BC. We have been far too complacent.
-
I'm waiting for the main forum to be put on here but could this March be scheduled for a Sunday instead of a Saturday in respect for the Jewish Sabbath? I want to support and promote this. It's very important to me but would not be able to if the March is on a Saturday.
-
Ladies,
This is a wonderful idea that I would absolutely LOVE to be part of. Unfortunately, the "facts of life" of dealing with metastatic bc won't allow my participation. If I knew I would be physically able to "march" in June, finances would not allow me to do so. I imagine that many other mets sisters are in similar circumstances.
Would you consider having "proxy" marchers for those of us with metastatic bc that cannot attend? perhaps having a different t-shirt color or something that would be visible in a group photograph? I think the impact of a certain percentage of the marchers being visibly identifiable as metastatic with the standard 2-5 year prognosis would be great.
ravdeb, what if it were a 2-day march? That way, Saturday worshippers could march on Sunday and vice-versa!
-
I'll be there! I also like the idea of a different-colored t-shirt to differentiate those sisters with mets...to bring attention to them.
would that mean 3 different colors? one for metsters, one for those who are NED, and one for nonbreast cancer people who are out to support?
-
GSG,
If I'm not mistaken, don't you work on the Hill???
Is so, can you give us any advice?
Thanks.
Valerie
-
Yes! Absolutely! Think big!
-
I think one day for the March has more impact actually. Sunday early afternoon and onward should be okay for most people.
Suzy..I agree with you and I hope that you can help coordinate this so that people can participate.
I think one t-shirt color and type is enough. We are not focusing, I believe, on t-shirts and paraphanelia but rather are united in commemorating those who have died and the fact that this is a deadly disease.
-
I wrote a letter to an old boyfriend of mine, that is still a good friend. He grew up with the president of livestrong, and the founder of the Ulman cancer fund. I told him whats happening, and asked him to pass my message along so we can get some advice, and tips about what we should be doing...
will report back when i hear something.
-
Well, Sunday would be out for me here. I live in the "bible belt" and most people would not participate on a Sunday for reasons similar to ravdeb's Saturday issues.
As for the t-shirts, it doesn't really matter to me if there is a different color for mets. I do think the visual impact should be considered, though. If there is substantial media coverage, there will likely be wide shots that should be exploited for the greatest impact.
I haven't read all the threads here yet as they are scattered about. I can tell you that waiting on the moderators to do anything is not likely to produce the desired result. They are "understaffed and underfunded" to the point where they can't attent to spam threads; I doubt if they will take the time and effort involved in adding a separate section to the boards.
I suggest that someone start an "official" march thread on one of the sections near the top of the boards. Newbies are less likely to realize the "active conversations" option is available and are more likely to see a message posted near the top of the main page. I don't think the "not diagnosed but worried" section would be the best; people who are coming here worried about being diagnosed are not going to want to be slapped in the face with an event like this when seeking information and support. The recurrence and mets section would be great except for the fact that it doesn't get very much traffic from non-recurrent or non-metastatic people.
-
Melissa did email me about this and I'm waiting to hear back from her about getting our own forum heading for the March in DC. We need our own forum heading so we can have different threads about the different activities needed to pull this off.
We have a lot of different people involved with different religions, and stages of cancer and living in different parts of the world. I'm in the bible belt too, but that doesn't affect me.
My hope is, however, that this does not turn into some sort of celebrity cause, i.e., Sheryl Crow and her environmental plastic bottle gave me cancer b.s.
Maybe if we could get a few more people writing to Melissa and asking for a separate forum that would help too.
Thanks,
Brenda
-
Good luck to you all
-
Badboob,
I'll march for you and I'll carry your picture.
Love,
Brenda
PS - I emailed Melissa again.
