March on Washington June 2008

Ladies,

There is a group of us on the boards that are seriously considering a march on Washington sometime in June 2008 to honor the over 40,000 men & women that die from this dreaded disease every year.

It will not be a fund raiser, and we really do not want any corporate sponsorship either.  All we want to do is fill the Mall with survivors and/or their families and let Congress, the US and the world know how many angels there are every year and the fact that we are mad as hell and we're not going to take it anymore.

So my question is, ARE YOU IN???

Please let us know so we can have an idea if this is doable.

Thanks,

Valerie

    Valerie,

Thanks for creating this thread.  We really needed to have a central place for all our information.  This is what we have so far.

We already have lots of volunteers.

I'll find out what dates are available in June and if we'll be in front of the White House or the Mall. I will send in the application for the permit along with my credit card for the $50.

Tender lives right by DC and has volunteered her home as a base for putting together signs, plans, coordinating of times, etc.

We can look into cafepress.com for designing and getting our t-shirts and other things for the memorial.  Maybe something like a black t, with "In Memory Of 40,910" written in pink on the back with the pink ribbon on the front.  Something that will raise questions.  All ideas are welcome.

More volunteers will be needed as soon as we get more info.  We'll need to spread the word all across the U.S., not just on bco!!!

I hope we can make this dream come true.

    Love,

    Brenda

I'd like to go too.  Date and a name of a hotel is all I'll need.   I'm still peeved over the gov't only granting $100,000 towards a 3D mammo machine that will work without compressing our breasts.  Why only $100k when they donate millions for crazy research.  Ever read the bedbug research that's been ongoing for 40 years?

    Okay,

    Here's what I found out ...

ALL the dates for permits for the govt. parks are filled through 2008 because it's an election year.

The only other possibility is to call the City of DC and see about getting a permit to walk on the north side of Constitution Ave (street), which the City owns.  The Mall park is on the opposite side of the street and we wouldn't be allowed to walk on that side. The City also owns the street between the White House and Lafayette Park, but not the Park.  All the parks are taken because of the election year.

Do you want me to call the City of DC and see about those two street options?

I just did some checking ... there is a little bit of wiggle room in the regulations!  If under 25 people we don't need a permit and if we don't call it a memorial.  We might be able to get away with it if we just wear the t-shirts, happen to show up in the same general vicinity or maybe in a couple of different locations in the park.  We could have groups of 25 spread out all over the park!!!!

    What do you think?

I'm in, just need a place to stay. I responded on another thread about a slogan..."We're Dying for a Cure" ; although maybe it's the drug companies we should be picketing?!

    Hi,

I have a friend who's a lawyer in a D.C. city councilman's office and a cancer survivor (colon).  I'll be happy to ask him for advice about permits and places to march.  I don't know if he'll have any answers as it's not his area of expertise, but it wouldn't hurt to ask!

I really take to the above "Dying for a cure".  That really hits home for me.
