Share your favorite "holiday" tradition!
What holiday traditions are there out there? I put holiday in quotes because I know different cultures celebrate in many different ways.
Here's my favorite:
About a week before Dec. 25, all my female relatives gather at my mom's. We bake our favorite holiday bread called (Finnish) Nesua or Pulla. It is braided and has cardamom in it, but sweet more like a dessert bread. While the Pulla bakes we set the table. It has to have a lovely cloth and special sheer finnish napkins that our relatives send from Finland. There are flower painted cups and saucers, a special berry wine (in Finland it might be Cloudberry). Just like a tea party. But we call ours a coffee party. This year there will be 4 generations at the Coffee Party, as my granddaughter was born at the end of April. When the bread comes out of the oven, we brush it with strong coffee and sprinkle with sugar. It's served with butter. We only do this once a year, so we go all out--to heck with the calories. We always make a double batch so everyone has a loaf to take home--for toasting the morning of Dec. 25th
We don't exclude the men, in fact, my dad when he was living insisted on getting the first two slices and he ate it while watching golf!

We go to a live performance of A Christmas Carol each year. This year we had a box to ourselves--so much nicer. We always buy our own plum pudding, douse it with brandy, stick a sprig of holly in it(the stem wrapped in foil)light it afire and re-enact one of our favorite scenes from our favorite play.

Midnight mass. I truly welcome the spirit of Christmas at that time and get rid of all the anxiety of preping for the holiday.

We've always followed the Jewish Christmas tradition: afternoon at the movies followed by dinner at a Chinese restaurant. Now that we have DVD, we stay home with rented movies and Chinese delivery!

For years, we went to the movies on Christmas Day.
This year, we are probably going to my friend's house for Christmas ... his mom is coming up and she is a little 80+ Italian lady, born in Sicily, who makes the best lasagna, meat balls and spaghetti ... We all spent Easter of 2006 together, with my mom and his mom, and Mrs. M's sauce was such a hit with my then 5 year old that she sends up to us when she makes a batch!
My mom will be here next weekend, so looking forward to having help wrapping the presents and having some champagne on Christmas Eve.

We go to the Christmas Eve service at church. For the last six years or so, my son has played piano in it, which is really neat. I love how the church looks with the candles and poinsettias. Love it!
