Well the time has finally come. Surgery is this Friday Dec. 14. I am nervous. I will be having unilateral mastectomy with pedicle tram reconstruction. I keep hearing about the pain. Hopefully it won't be too bad. I saw my oncologist today and he is not convinced that tumor is so large (8cm. according to MRI). He said there is also lobular in situ involved which I was unaware of. I am her2 neg and er/pr + which is good. He said tumor is not aggressive and should respond to hormone. Really hoping and praying tumor is smaller. Looking for some prayers. So glad to have found this sight. I have learned so much about this sneaky cancer that I felt like a pro at my doctor visit today. Actually knew what he was talking about. Thanks to all for all your very helpful inputs. Wishing you all a Happy Holiday and a very happy and HEALTHY New Year.

    Hi Kathleen,

It is empowering to know what the drs are talking about and to be your own adversary.

Two bits of advice:  When they inject for the sentinel node, insist on numbing solution or local injection.

And be sure to use presc-strength stool softener.  The pain meds, muscle relaxants, and anti-nausea meds are all very constipating.

My positive thoughts and prayers will be with you on Friday.

Kathleen, I second the advice on the stool softener!

And I recall when I met with the radiation oncologist for a consult and he said that they really wouldn't know the true size of the tumor until they did the surgery. He said sometimes they feel larger than they are because there is swelling around the tumor area.

I hope things go well for you and I'll say a prayer on Friday.

Kathleen, best wishes to you on Friday. Yes, it's scary, but it's also one step closer to putting all this behind you. Take it one day at a time. And don't forget...take it easy for a while, you don't have to be superwoman. Good luck...keep us posted.
