    Hi jinky....

I'm on AI's too, but I am on Arimidex.  I was told 1500 mg of calcium and 1000 U of Vit. D. This is what he tells all his patients who go on any AI's or so the nurses tell me.

    Hope that helps some.

    Hi Jinky,

My onc told me to take a centrum(multivitamin, caltrate+vit d which is packaged as one item, 1500mg a day , postmenopausal.)  Also has me taking low dose asprin 81 mg daily with femara dosage. This seems to help with the stiffness in hands and joints.

Hope this helps.   Have a great daySmile

Does anyone know if Calcium binds with Femara thus making it, Femara, less effective?  I know  I take thyroid meds and cannot take it with clacium for that reason.

sschmidt, you can take calcium with thryroid meds, but have to wait four hours AFTER you take your thyroid med.

One cannot absorb more than about 500 mg of calcium at one time.  If you are going to take calcium carbonate take it with food.  It' needs acid to absorb.  Calcium citrate is more easily absorbed.  Also, be sure to take Magnesium also.  I'm taking 200 IUs of D right now.  I had my levels checked Thursday, but have not found out what it is yet.  I'll call my primary doc if I don't hear from them.  I have the other blood work, but not the D.  Hmmmm...

I take other supplements but not because any doctor told me to.

Most of the gals here tell us to have our vitamin D level checked.  This is the second time he's done it upon my request.

Shirley...I just want to add that, according to an article Rosemary sent to me, calcium carbonate is contraindicated for those of us on thyroid meds, so it's recommended that we take calcium citrate instead.

Thanks, Marin.  I didn't know that.  However, I do take calcium citrate.  But if someone else that I know is taking Synthroid I can tell them IF THEY'LL LISTEN!

Well, who knew?  My doctor didn't mention calcium at all.  I do know that it should be taken after most meds, not only thyroid which by the way should be taken on an empty stomach for it's best effect.  I take it in the am with other meds and wait a bit for breakfast, but I can't seem to wait that long for the coffee.  I should be taking calcium at night, but Mybad.  I keep forgetting.

I need to put it by the bed on the nightstand with a glass of water so that I don't forget to take it.  Thanks for the heads up.  Karen Murphy

I don't have thyroid issues, so take calcium carbonate in the form of Tums. I hate most Tums but found one type--Smoothies, Cocoa and Creme--that actually taste delicious. I take two in the morning after breakfast (600 mgs--I know only 500 are absorbed), one after lunch, two after dinner. I also take a total of 900 mgs. of Vitamin D (D3) per day, plus 400-600 mg. magnesium. My onc had suggested 1200 mgs calcium/day. My PCP recommended adding the D and okayed the magnesium when I mentioned I'd read about it here. I'm now off Femara, but started this regimen while still on it.

I used to take Citrical, mostly changed to Tums because I discovered I have a mild form of reflux that doesn't cause regular heartburn but causes hoarseness and is helped by antacids. So the Tums does double duty for me!
