Karate Promotions Coming Up...
And I don't have the usually antsy, "I just want to get this over with" feeling I usually have. What's up with that?
For the first time, I'll be testing with the advanced students (brown belts) and I KNOW the senior dans (black belts) will be hyper-critical of all we do. I'm having trouble with my knee (from training 2x's a week on a carpet-covered concrete dojo floor), which has made getting down in stance during kata tough lately. Please pray that I don't go flying across the room when they come around and check kata stances by breaking a board across our legs...

Felicia,
awesome!
You came that far, that board would feel sorry for itself
Are you taking fish oil and/or turmeric?
I would also suggest Advil ahead of time, that was a skiing insider tip I learned after being in pain for a bloody weekend.....I went on the lift chanting "Advil, Advil" lol. I couldn't believe that sporty skiers take Advil before the pain starts....duhhhh....I would not do it without anymore either...
Good luck!!!
-
Felicia, I can't believe your testing has come so quick... I know You will do fine.. I also took some pain relievers & anti inflamatories (sp?) before my test, it really did help... you know after 3 hours ...
you wil be ok , if I can do it so can you....

Thanks for the advice. I'm allergic to Advil, but I will take Tylenol before we start just in case. I have some fish oil, Calico, just been kind of lax about taking it on a regular...
MB - I'm testing for second kyu, not 1st dan black belt. We are eligible to test twice a year (December and May), although black belt testing is only done each May. That may mean I'll have to sit out a promotion and be a 1st kyu for a year (which I'm thinking is a blessing, so I'm cool with that). Last promotions, I was a purple belt (4th kyu) and tested with the green belts, so this time will be quite a challenge.
Feeling confident, just not nervous. Usually I'm shaking in my shoes by now...
Eight days to go! -
Very exciting. You're going to be awesome! This is such a big step! I agree and think it's great that you'll be a year at this level. I can't imagine plowing through the ranks at 2 a year! But that's just 'cause it's how we're used to it. let us know!!!!
-
Thanks, J. Three days to go and still no nerves - which of course makes me nervous...
Tomorrow night will be the last class before testing. We've been going over our one point take downs (Ippon Kumite) and one point releases/wrist grips (Aiki Jitsu) for the last two weeks, so I feel pretty comfortable with them, but breaking is always the hardest part for me. I've tried to break using a regular, ordinary side kick for the last two tests and failed. I've been practicing on a heavy bag with a marked target area since the last promotion, which will hopefully help. I'm planning two kicking breaks (side kick and front snap kick), one arm break (palm heel strike) and one back empi. Two boards each for the palm heel and empi, so six boards total. Here's to hoping they snap like twigs)!
-
Felicia, I hear them breaking under fear.. you can do it... just put the face of BC at the far side of each board...
MB

hey cant you teach me too
-
felica i am anna-kay
-
MB - I usually envision the face of my ex hubby, lol. Works like a charm! Problem was he kept moving around with the sidekick. Perhaps I'll envision the face of h2b's ex wife this time...
Anna-Kay, are you a martial artist, too? Breaking a board is supposed to mean actually going "through" - as opposed to "to" - the board, sort of like you'd level a punch if you had to: not to the skin or clothing, but through the ribs.
-
Done! It was by far the toughest promotion I've ever had (the warmup lasted almost an hour and we did about 200 pushups in that time along with other drills and cals; my gi was soaked through before we even began). But for the first time, I truly appreciated the journey. I enjoyed every minute - even all those bloody pushups - not just the actually getting my certificate/stripe. I had so much fun!
Two of my training partners promoted to 3rd kyu (brown belt), which means that if all goes well, we will test for shodan at the same time: May 09. It is so exciting that we'll be taking that part of the journey together!
Everyone was so awesome! The breaks were incredible! The boards were snapping like twigs all over the room, lol - and no one went flying when the senior dans checked our stances by pushing and slapping our legs and arms. Whew!
I was the highest rank testing, so there was one kata I had to do all alone. Since it was right before sparring (the last thing we do), everyone in the room was watching. I thought I was going to throw up, but I made it through...
So, thanks for your thoughts and well-wishes! I'm so glad it's over so I can chill and just think about training for six months - when I'll be the karate mom filming my son as he tests for shodan!! -
Congratulations Felicia!!!!
What can I say?
Told 'ya!!!!!
and holy cow for all the push ups!!!!
You go girl!!!!!
-
You are amazing, Felicia!!
Congratulations. You deserve this!
The thought of any pushups for me with this thinned out pecs makes me aches! On the othre hand, I'm back at the rings in the gym, on my quest to do an unassisted pull up!!
Anne
-
What's that saying about a journey of a thousand miles? Consider the rings the first step of your pull up journey, Anne! You'll be knocking them out like nothing in no time flat!
And thanks for the Tylenol tip, Calico! Not sure if it was the adrenalin or the drugs, but my knees were ok during the test :-) -
Many congratulations Felicia!
That's fantastic! Wow, 200 pushups!! I'd be jello after that and wouldn't be able to do a thing! I thought I was doing good at 60! I bow to you!
Training for shodan is the coolest. You're up for a great time!

Thanks, J.,
Luckily, the 200 pushups weren't all at once. it was 30 here, 20 there, etc. What made it so exhausting is that they were kind of close together. Every time a new black belt got up to lead the warmup/kihon, they had us to pushups! Once, we had to do 20 because someone let their feet slam down during leg raises! Although I know it was all about "emptying our cups," I was thinking the senior dans were some of the most sadistic and twisted folks on the planet, lol! At one point, I felt one pec starting to twitch and thought it was going to fail and I'd wipe out/land flat on my face, but it didn't, thankfully. But had we done 10 more...
I asked my sensei how many pushups he thought we did and he said he wasn't sure exactly - just that it was over 200 - but that it WAS NOT a promotion record! Gulp... -
Felicia
Congrats I knew you'd do just fine...
don't you LOVE push ups as a punishment...lol... nice to know all the Dojo's do it....
MB
-
I guess pushups beat the heck out of getting HIT for punishment, lol. Some folks do them all on their knuckles. God bless 'em!
-
Felicia, I've been a voyeur reading about your upcoming promotion and now your success. How exciting!!! You are awesome and awe-inspiring.
Congratulations!
Debbie
-
Thanks, Debbie! Hopefully, my journey will inspire you to hit something (not someONE, lol). It really is a great way to relieve stress. My personal theory is that folks who punch/kick things and scream really loudly don't get ulcers - and the folks/pets they share a house with are a lot happier, too...
-
Felicia,
I like to 'kick it up' on the running trails. I am one of those outdoor athletes - running, biking, kayaking, cross country skiing, hiking, etc. I get my port out tomorrow so am looking forward to a bit of winter backpacking. The port was right in line with my pack straps. Woo hoo!
Looking forward to hearing more of your 'kick ass' accomplishments. :-)
Debbie
-
Running, biking, kayaking, cross country skiing, hiking and winter backpacking?!? It is YOU kicking ass, my friend. I humbly bow to your athletic prowess!
Great news about your port! I'm high-fivin' my computer screen for you... -
Felicia, you know full well that karate is a highly, highly disciplined practice. With running, etc., it is one foot in front of the other. You stumble, you fall, you get up and keep going. I think I do the running, etc. because I can get away with doing something without it being perfect. The common denominator for me is that it is an outside activity. The stars were lovely tonight and the ground with crisp and covered in white.
From what I understand about karate and other such practices, there is no compromise for doing it right. I really am impressed with what you have accomplished. :-)
Debbie
-
Well, let me preface this by saying that before karate, my "other" discipline was running (track and field; I was a high jumper). Running is so individual! It takes a whole lot of discipline to get up and put your running shoes on to go for a short or LSD (that's Long, Slow Distance for the non-runners - not psychotropic drugs, lol). No one is making you go - but you go anyway. That's discipline personified!
Pain is a great teacher in karate. Getting it wrong can get you hurt, which makes you learn to do it right next time. Maybe on some very primal level, katatekas are driven by fear! Doing it right makes you like it more and more on a spiritual level. I guess it is the equivalent of a runner's high or being "in the zone" in any other activity.
Keep on running and biking and kayaking and cross country skiing and hiking, girl! You rock :-) -
I just want to add my congratulations to you, Felicia. Job well done!!!!
-
Thanks, Anne! How're your kitties doing btw?
-
They are doing fine - one of them was having a problem with kidney failure, but at his last check-up we were told "slight" improvement. At least there was no downward progression. How is Vestley? Staying close to home, I hope?
-
Vestley won't even go NEAR the front door, lol. Whatever she experienced during her outdoor adventure was enough to keep wanderlust in check for a while, I think...
