    Hello,

Today is my birthday so like a dummy I scheduled my 'routine' mammo for today.

My husband was being a turd this morning, kiddo running late for school, so why did I think my mammo would be good?

They called me back for more images and magnified an area that showed 2 itsy dots (calcifications).  Of course they don't give you any indication only that they will get the report to my breast surgeon.

I called the breast surgeons office and they said they probably won't know anything until they get the report right before my follow up next Wednesday the 12th.  This sucks donkey dongs.

P.S.  I had a clear MRI just a few months ago.

    Anyone else have this?

    Hi Watson,

When i was diagnosed, I had about 6 to 8 "itsy dots"-- microcalcifications but they were in a certain formation, sort of like 2 lines that crossed, which turned out to be DCIS.  I got the impression from the radiologist that the formation of the dots made the microcalcs more suspicious.  Microcalcifications can also be nothing at all.  Mine showed up on the mammo but not on the UltraSound. Whatever it is, you have found it very early so try not to worry (i know, hard to do).

    Happy Birthday!!!!!!!

Yes, I had my first bilateral mammo after finishing treatment and they found microcals in my (at the time) good breast....I had to have a mini lumpectomy to have them removed as the rad onco freaked and had me thinking I had cancer all over again!!!! As it turned out it was strickly calcifications thank god!!!!

and yes, as Celia said above, there is a certain pattern that they watch for with calcs that indicate possible trouble brewing...

Im sorry you have to go through this...I know how hard it was for me at 6 months out of treatment to have a mammo like that already :(....

Hang tight, my thoughts will be with you for a clear report from your surgeon...

    Hugs

I had my 2nd round of calcifications at the same time as my 1st.

I had calcifications in my right breast that turned out to be a combination of ADH, high grade DCIS and a microinvasion of IDC.   While I was going through pre-surgery tests prior to my scheduled mastectomy, more suspicious calcifications were discovered in my other breast.  Since I'd just been diagnosed, I assumed that these calcifications would be cancer too.  I had the biopsy and it turned out that these were run-of-the-mill benign calcifications.  Interestingly, when I had a pre-op MRI about 3 weeks later, the cancerous calcifications in my right breast lit up the MRI while the benign calcifications in my left breast didn't show up at all.

So try not to worry.  About 60% of women get calcifications, and most calcifications - about 80% - are benign.   I know from experience that just because you've been diagnosed with BC before doesn't mean that any new calcifications are cancer.  Your calcifications are just as likely to be benign as anyone else's!  And hopefully for you the clear MRI is a good sign.

Good luck.  Fingers crossed for you!

    Thanks y'all.

Margaritas for lunch with friends calmed me a bit but it was your wisdom that has truly talked me off the ledge.

    Love ya much,

It is very common to have calcifications after a lumpectomy. This has happened to me twice and I've been called back for follow-up mammos six months later. I've also had a bunch of breast biopsies, all benign, since bc. This is part of the territory. Our breasts have been through a lot and they show the wear and tear. It doesn't sound terribly worrisome to me. Keep us posted.
