Deborah,
I was 42 when I was diagnosed with CDIS also. No complications or other measures were needed. Just the mastectomy on my left breast. for 12 years I have struggled with the idea of implants and finally decided to go for it, as I had / have a hard time mentally with the mastectomy and with other women showing cleavage all the time. anyrate, I am scheduled for March 19th 2008 and wish it was a lot sooner. I am having an expander first, then after 6 months or so, I will have the silicone implants put in the expanded side and one put in on my old floppy side. I am a bit nervous, as the ps said that I will be a "c". I was a small "b" before and don't want to over do it, so he said ok, a small "c" as the floppy older breast looks like a ski slope
! I am now 53. Well, I didn't want a perky one and my ski slope so I went with having the other one perked up. Hopefully, all will look well in the end. I do know where you are at and so many questions and feelings to deal with. Good luck in your decision.

Hi Morgaine,
I had SIEA on one side and DIEP on the other. I cannot tell the difference between the sides, other than the SIEA side lagged behind in healing. Here is some information I found regarding the difference:
The main difference between the SIEA flap and the DIEP flap is the artery used to supply blood flow to the newly reconstructed breast. The SIEA blood vessels are generally found in the fatty tissue just below skin whereas the DIEP blood vessels run below and within the abdominal muscle (making the surgery more technically challenging). While the surgical preparation of each flap is slightly different, both procedures spare the abdominal muscle and only use the patient's skin and fat to reconstruct the breast.
While the SIEA flap procedure is similar to the DIEP, it is used less frequently since the arteries required are generally too small to sustain the flap in most patients. Less than 20% of patients have the anatomy required to allow this procedure. Unfortunately, there are no pre-operative tests to show which patients have the appropriate anatomy. The decision as to which technique to proceed with is therefore made intra-operatively by the plastic surgeon based on the patient's anatomic findings at the time of surgery.

Please add me to the list for 12/27/07. Then I will be really, really done.
I am doing well. The redness on my chest is practically all gone. My temp is running between 98.6 and 99.9. I haven't been over 101 in a day or so.
-
Just wanted to check in and see how everyone is doing. Everybody souds so upbeat and positive - way to go!!! I have my first fill this Thursday, praying for no more muscle spasms. Hoping you all continue to heal quickly and feel better soon. - Sandy
-
Sandy - hopefully you won't have any more muscle spasms. I had my bilat and expanders done at the same time and had spasms for a few days but didn't have any during expansions. My first expansion was very uncomfortable as my ps put in 120cc, after that we never did more than 60cc at a time. Also, the 2 tylenol plus 2 advil were a big help!
Good luck
xJackie -
I am having my bilateral skin sparing but NOT nipple sparing mastectomy and implant reconstruction on monday 12-10. DX is DCIS in left breast. The PS says I have a 50/50 chance of getting my silicone implants at the time of surgery. If there is any concern with blood supply being compromised by the implant I will wake up with an expander. I currently have 400 cc saline HP implants (cosmetic) I want to be bigger not smaller so we will see what happens. I am so scared, depressed and nervous as the day is approaching!
-
Dear cc01, of course you are scared and it is such an unknown. This board has been very helpful for me and I'm sure you will find a lot of support here. I had a bilat and removed both nipples, then had expanders during chemo, and recently exchanged for silicone implants, I still don't have nipples. Everyone has a different experience with the surgery. I handled it well although I did have discomfort and pain, it also took me a while to get used to the new look. I wondered a lot about implant type and size and eventually my ps chose something in the operating room that worked with my proportions. I was a 32b before and am now a 32c, my new implants look great.
Keep us posted on how you get on. I felt the same way before as you do now, it will get better
xJackie -
Hi Morgaine,
I can't believe you're already out walking! Good for you! It's great to hear about such a strong recovery. I'm feeling very good 3 days out from my exchange surgery. I took only one dose of ibuprofin today. I'm going stir crazy already and wishing I could drive! I love Dr. Song, but do wish he would've prepared me better for the drop in breast size from expander to implant. I'm sure I'll be happier with my new chest as I adjust to it. Take care of yourself, and keep up the good mending!

Hi all
7 more days till my recon surg. I am nervous. I wonder how I am going to look and feel when I wake up? What a journey:<}. Went to see my parents this weekend only to find out that my dad, who finished chemo for lymphoma.....now has stomach cancer. I am a wreck!!!!!! After all that treatment his lymphoma is gone and now this. Please, take a moment and pray for him.....his name is Rick!!!!
Thank you

Hi Jackie - At first my ps was talking about 100cc fills, but after all the pain I had with the placement of the expander he said maybe we would try 75cc's to start and see how it goes. I'm going to take your advice with the advil and tylenol. I was thinking maybe of taking a flexaril beforehand just in case. Feeling a little apprehensive, my appt is Thursday night after work, so I will only have Friday to get through at work, and then the week-end to recover if I have any problems. I would love to do bigger fills to get this whole thing over with faster, but I think I will take it a little bit slower just to be safe. He wants to get me up to 800cc's, so this is gong to take a while. What did you wear to look more even during the process? I don't want to look to unbalanced, and I know eventually my prosthesis won't fit properly. Hope things are going well for you. - Sandy
-
Jade, I'm sorry to hear about your dad. I'll keep you both in my prayers. I did get the expanders filled a little bit when they were implanted and if I hadn't had trouble healing (bruising needed another surgery) then my PS starts fills as early as two weeks after surgery. I had my first fill last week and it was so fun to actually get a little more cleavage and small almost "A" cup breasts.
I will be thinking of you on your surgery day.
-
Jade, so sorry to hear about your dad. I hope his stomach cancer is very treatable. I know he must feel like he is being kicked while down. God bless all of you and I have been and will continue to pray for him and all of your family. Sammie Kay
-
Traci,
Glad that your exchange surgery went well!!
I have been on & off for awhile, and don't remember seeing your recent posts...Hope you are feeling good, without much pain!!
Harley
P S I pm'd you...
-
I will be 2 weeks tomorrow and my drain is happily putting out, 60cc/day. Oh for a soaking bath or nice long shower.
My pain is getting better and better.I have started driving again.
Sorry to hear about your Dad Jade.
Who is the next on the list??? Are you all getting along OK post-op?

I am regreting my decision to have no implant with my lat dorsi flap...my reconstructed side is smaller...who wants to be smaller than 34A? I have started wearing my prosthesis again for better symmetry.
I will see the surgeon next week for my first post-op visit. I was a poor candidate before for an implant because I was irradiated, now with my flap I think an implant would be relatively simple but then jeesh I would have to fix up my 46 year old breast or I won't have symmetry again.. Will I ever be satisfied?
Maybe I will adjust to the slightly smaller me?
Fists up!

Hey Maryanne - Sorry to hear you're not happy with your results. Maybe doing an implant wouldn't be too bad. You might as well go for the results you want, rather than just settle for convenience sake. After going through treatment, you deserve to do something to make yourself happy. I certainly wouldn't want to have to wear a prosthesis after finally deciding on recon surgery. I wasn't sure whether I wanted to start this whole process because I was kind of happy not having weekly doctors appts., and after the initial postop pain, I didn't know if I had made the right decision. Now though, I am feeling human again and am looking forward to getting rid of this prosthesis and being able to wear anything I want eventually. I had 60 cc's at the placement of the expander and just had another 90 cc's placed tonight. My ps figures 8 weeks for expansion, and then exchange after a couple of months and then a lift on the "good" side a few months after that. I guess I'm going to get to know him really well!! Anyway.... hope you are feeling well and good luck with your decision. I hope everyone who has had surgery is healing quickly and good luck to everyone else waiting for their turn. - Sandy

Hi, good to hear many are healing and happy. I fully understand that feeling of not wanting anything else done to my body. Going into surgery on the 29th of Nov. thinking that was it, only to wake up and be told in order to have the proper outcome, I have to wear the expanders for 4 more weeks and one more surgery. I just want to be done. There is a nagging problem that I want to push under a rug somewhere and ignore. I have been running a low grade fever for 6 weeks. No one seems to be able to uncover a reason. Some days I am so excited because it is near normal, then like today my temp will be 101.3. I don't want to call the oncologist because I am afraid it might mean there is a cancer growing somewhere and I just don't want to deal with that. I want to be healthy.
Has anyone else had this problem of running a low grade temp. with expanders? The ps thinks the expanders are causing my body to run a temp. My husband doesn't understand why I have had these expanders for a year and why now for the last 6 weeks I would run a fever. Any info would really be appreciated. Love, Sammie Kay
-
SammieKay, I ran a low grade fever(38-38,5) during chemo for over a month. We could not find a source. In the end I removed my port and voila, no more fever.
Do you still have your port? Have you done simple tests? Like getting your urine checked and having a CXR and blood cultures done? Sometimes connective tissue problems cause low grade fevers...like arthritis. It would be unusual for your cancer to present as a fever.
Fists up!

Mary-Anne,
Add me to the list for 12/17 - free TRAM unilateral recon & augment (good side). Someone said the waiting is the worst part -- I hope that's true. I'm anxiously counting the days....10 to go. Thanks ladies for your recovery posts....it's encouraging to hear from you after your "done"! Mary-Anne, I hope your post-op appt. goes well! I can understand your frustration with the symmetry issue after all you've gone through. I wonder if anyone gets good symmetry after unilateral recon? I'm trying for an augment on the good side to get symmetry but I'm not setting my sights too high.

I knew symmetry was not likely with unilateral recon, just the dreamer in me dreamed, I guess. If I were just a bit heavier I think it would have been a better match. I am trying to avoid recon on my good side, I am afraid of changing my sexual response. I am still hoping to bond to my new, if smaller breast. I think I will. If I am not happy in the long run I can always go back for implants and augment. Either way I am glad I did what I have done so far. I already feel more like me with my new breast.
On a more positive note, my back is doing very well.I have only a pulling sensation when I stretch and slight pain if I touch the operative area. I am off until early Jan but maybe I could have gone back to work earlier.
SJOC sounds like things are going well with you, glad to hear it. Did you have bilateral expanders placed? Are you back to work or feeling like you could be?
Fists up!

Mary-Anne, I don't have my port anymore, however, I can see the expanders as a source of the fever, just like the port. Any foreign body, don't you think it is possible that the expanders could cause the same reaction as the port? I feel good this evening. I was real dizzy and wobbly feeling this morning. Have decided I am not going to be able to take the Lyrica for my fibromyalgia and back pain. I would rather have pain and feel like myself. I just don't seem to me able to take those drugs, like neurontin and Lyrica that work on your brain. Messes me up big time. I am going on the assumption that the expanders are the source of the fever and if after I get my silicone implants on Dec. 27th I continue to run a temp. then I will contact the oncologist. My internist has run all the blood work, urinalysis, I had a chest xray for pre-op, had IVP and ultrasound of kidneys and then a dedicated CT scan of the left kidney because they thought I had a tumor in the left kidney. Turned out to be a "normal" abnormality some people are born with a little hump on the kidney. They even call it "dromedary" kidney on the report.
I hope everyone who is fresh post-op is doing well, especially ballamay and Deborah.
Good luck and God bless 2curvy, jade, and cc01 on Monday.
I will have my tatoos done in the office on Monday, the 10th. Then he will do the nipple recon. on the 27th.
Hugs all around. Stay warm, take that pain med and take care all.
Love you guys, Sammie Kay

I had my first post-op appt yesterday and my ps says I am doing really well, I could be jogging and bike riding in a week. I told him "let's not go too far!!" I have very little pain. My biggest complaint is that I am having trouble sleeping on my back. I am in a recliner, but I dream of the day I can sleep on my side. Dr said another couple weeks. We don't want to wreck my perfect new breasts! I had been so worried about this surgery, got all my Christmas shopping done, etc. Now I am feeling pretty good, I haven't had more than a headache as far as pain goes. Weird! I have been released to drive, so I can take my daughter to school. I will probably spend a lot of time the next few weeks doing scrapbooking. Hopefully that will keep me from going stir-crazy!
Laura

Ladies,
Do not rush the expansions, go for 45 to 50 cc's at a time. Our skin can handle so much. I only had pain towards the end. One tylenol and it worked. You are control of this procedure not them. You should not have to be in this much pain. We have been through enough and should be able to enjoy this part. Looking forward to my implant (right side) and a little lift on the left. One year ago I was diagnosed (Stage II
, 2 lumpectomies, one mastecomy and chemo later I feel great and looking forward to 2008.Katherine

Hi
You wont believe this.....after being told that my dad now has stomach cancer...the dr called, and said they "might" of mixed his slide with someone elses. He had to go back and get another biop. That is crazy. We will find out on Monday.
I keep on waiting for a dr to call me, and tell me I didnt have cancer.....but I wont hold my breath.
I am going in for my reconstruction surg this Monday. This will be the first surg my parents wont be by my side for. They have to stay in Ft.laud for my dads testing. I have my loving husband....but I really want my mom.....I feel like a child. I am scared. I am afraid of disapointment, but I just need to focus on staying here for my family.....and being OK!!!!!
Thank you again for all the prayers and love
j
-
Jade, I can't believe it about your dad. I sure hope everything works out OK for him.
I know what you mean about wanting your mom. I wanted my mom too, but I had my husband to help me--and be there with me and he really stepped up to support me.
I just know you will have good support from your husband too. I'll keep you in my prayers. From what you posted before your plastic surgeon sounds like she really cares about you too.
Hugs and good wishes!
-
Jade; OMG!! I can't believe they did that to your dad! It must be very stressful for all of you. I will certainly keep you & all your family in my thoughts & prayers.
When I was first diagnosed, I wanted my mom. I am not a particularly young woman, and I have a wonderful husband, but suddenly I was a little girl again who just wanted her mom to make it all better. So I can understand where you're coming from. Good luck with your surgery & I'm sure your mom is right there with you in spirit.

Hi
Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. My husband is a FANTASTIC man, and he went far beyound love, and care, with my bilat mast. Just something about a mom, you know?:<} I will be OK. Keep my dad in your prayers.....I have been losing sleep, just not knowing what is going on, and praying that the cancer (for him) is gone. He has a bad cough again and that scares the bleep out of me.
Anyway....I cant believe tomar is my day. I will be thinking about all your journeys and cross my fingers for mine:<}
WOW...me with boobs.....I forgot what I look like

Three people on for tomorrow:
2curvy 12/10 diep
jade 12/10 bilateral expanders
cc01 12/10 bilateral skin sparing mastectomy and implant reconstruction
Happy surgeries for you all and don't forget to check in when you can.
Fists up!

2curvy, jade and cc01, just wanted to wish ya'll good luck. I'll keep ya'll in my prayers tomorrow. Wishing you all successful surgeries and quick and easy recoveries.
Jade,
I'll keep your dad in my prayers too. I hope he'll get good news.
God Bless!
-
To the three 12/10 girls -- jade, cc01 & 2curvy -- I will have you in my thoughts and prayers all day tomorrow....and hoping the best for your Dad, jade.
Thanks for your post, mommytms2 -- that's wonderful you are doing so well just 10 days out of surgery?! Do you still have any drains in? It's so encouraging to hear you say how little pain you have. How was the pain the first day or two out of surgery?
