continued Tissue expander pain!!

Tracy
I had my first fills - no problems and NO PAIN. I hope it doesn't develope later tonight. My PS uses only 60cc the first time, and never goes more than 100 - 120 at a single fill. My "breasts" (?) feel much softer after the fill and not hurting as much as BEFORE the fill...strange
-
I got my first fill on Wednesday and my PS assistant/nurse did it. She said she would put in as much as I could tolerate--and I ended up being able to get about 100cc in each side. My left side was sore in the evening--and I was sore at night, but by the time I woke up I felt fine. I also feel MUCH better after getting the expanders filled.
My PS came in to see me after the fills and she said that often it will feel better because the saline will lift the expanders a bit more off the ribs. I can't explain it, but I knew exactly what she meant because that digging, gouging feeling below the expanders is mostly gone and the tugging and pulling and pain I felt on my breast bone is much much better. I am so relieved and happy to have the beginnings of a breast on each side.
I also started PT today so now I am on my way to getting my range of motion back.
Yay for baby steps forward for all of us!
-
Traci, nice to see you back in the land of the living!!! I was worried about all the surgeries for you. Glad to hear the exchange was good...I'm right behind you on the 18th!
, I had itching as well while the skin stretched. I had a skin sparing mast but it still needed to stretch a lot. I used Palmer's cocoa butter about 5 times a day to help. I saw a PT the other day about the muscle spasms and pain in my upper arm; she said it was the nerves trying to wake up. She also said it could take up to 2 years for the brain to get the message it needed to reroute things because of the lymph nodes removed (only 6).
Yall have a good one...I've got to grade final exams.

I had my second fills yesterday. Had 50 cc in each. It instantly felt very, very tight, but no muscle spasms! Thank goodness I did not try another 100 cc fill. I am amazed at the differences in fills that each of us can handle and ultimately how much each of us gets in total. I am shooting for 580 cc – that is how much tissue came out- sitting at 370 cc right now. But I tried on my old bras and I am not that far off right now. I was a full C in the left and small D in the right. Never could find a bra that fit both breasts at once! Maybe I will be stopping earlier and hopefully now I will be the same size in each cup (alls sorts of hidden pluses in this process).
Lady4law – I am happy to hear all is well with you. You don’t need any added discomfort at this point. I expect there is an added advantage of the PT in that it probably really helps with the muscle stretching of the pectorals as well as your back problem.
Teribear – how did your expansion go? Hope all is well.
Traci thank you so much for posting again after you have reached the goal. It is so nice to hear from the other side of this experience. Are you happy with the way your new breasts look? And with how they feel? At this point I simply cannot conceive of how these uncomfortable, rock hard, man-boobs will ever resemble the real thing!
Hey Margaret, you are so close. It is nearly December. You will have the switch just in time for xmas. Make sure you keep in touch after the fact so we can enjoy your victory too!
Yah, Teribear I am in Norway for the year – hubby’s work brought us (plus my 16 and 10 yr olds). I’ve been working so hard for so many years I decided that this was a great opportunity to take this one just for me. I found a great person to run my business while I am gone. The plan was to take time to ponder my journey of the last 46 years and what the next 46 years will be. Kind of get caught up with myself, centered and balance and all that. Then this stupid thing happened! Seems like life just plans itself! But not all is lost. I do know one thing that I did not know 4 months ago and that is I am now 95% certain that the next 46 years does NOT involve me dancing with breast cancer - YAHOOOO. Of all people I can think of, you girls know exactly how much peace of mind that knowledge brings.

Hey Ladies!
Hey Margaret!!!
....thanks for the compliments. I needed them today. I've been working at the computer all day long having "issues" and I finally just broke down. Not sure what's wrong with me.
I called my Dr again because blood was coming through the new bandage. He just said to take off the special "bra" and put an ace bandage around it to apply pressure to stop the bleeding. I get to take the bandages off tomorrow and see what's there.
I'm a little anxious because it's my right breast and that mastectomy incision was perfect compared to my left incision. I think my surgeon hiccuped when he did my left.
Jani, I have relief from the concrete but no...I am not happy right now. It looks like I'm going to be smaller than I was and I was already small.
He gave me a special "bra" that reminds me of a male jock strap. Same type of material. It's suppose to push the implants down and together. Well, it doesn't seem like it's doing that. I keep pushing them together myself.
Hopefully, it will all be o.k. in the end. I just can't wait for the end. I'm sorry but I'm just down today....I don't know why....my Cowboys pulled it out last night!! I should be totally happy. I think what it is is the pain pills. I don't like taking them but I think I will need them for at least another day. And, being behind on work and having to work a full day sucks. In about 4 minutes I'm going for a nap!!
Margaret, good luck to you girl. My little sis is having her other breast cut off and doing a tram-flap to make everything even on 12/13. She tested positive for BRCA 1 and has been lopsided for years since her BC. I think her seeing me go through it has given her the courage to go ahead and get it done. I'm happy for her but, I know that recovery is rough and she has a jerk for a husband and to of the most spoiled rotten bratty kids ever given birth to. Not really but close! lol!!
Sorry to write a book.
I hope all you guys are doing o.k.
Hugs, Traci
-
Traci, best of luck to your sis! I sure hope you are feeling better soon and I can't wait to hear how everything looks with your bandages off. Do they feel better than the expanders?? I am getting to the point I am about ready to stop expanding I think I want one or two more but am already suffering with the muscle spasms and discomfort....we'll see. My ps is only doing 50 cc's now but that was still very painful. The nurse pract. gave me flexeril and told me to take 3 montrin as needed and before my next fill.
Jani, you know maybe your timing was no accident with the time you took off for yourself and finding the bc. Sometimes things work out for the best in the long run. My husband travels with his business as well but we don't go along and I am here with my two girls, ages 3 and 5 (my boys 16 and 18, live with their dad nearby) handling this expansion and pain and taking care of the house and kids all alone. It is not easy let me tell you.
My expansion was rough yesterday and I am thinking I am about finished since it feels like my body is having a very hard time stretching now. I just wanted bigger boobs than when I started out! I figure I might as well get something good out of this! Wearing a sundress in the summer will be my pay off! lol
hang in there everyone!
Teri
-
Hey Teribear
Nice to hear from you. Sorry this expansion was not easier than last. Massage (on the upper pecs), hot water bottle at night, gentle resistance exercise, and gentle stretching has cured my muscle spasms. Try different things and find what works for you. It is so much more managable without the spasms!
My fill on Thursday was still very, very tight though. I realize now that I will be taking more time to complete this phase - even if I have to go down to 20-30 mls per with more time between, and if I have to stop before I reach where I was before then that is okay too. We will live with these new boobs (and we mustn't ever forget -breast cancer free) for the rest of our lives. So patient persistence will pay off and you will know when the time is to stop.
Hang in there - one fill at a time!

Traci
Be careful with Vitamin K as I have a friend that is on blood thinners and has been told to eat little to nothing containing K as it will cause bleeding. She and I were study together when I noticed her eye turning red, she had eaten spinach. Her eye was bleeding. She rushed to the hospital and was told- too much K in her system. I had a lot of bleeding following my mast, and had to have my incisions reopened, cleaned and sewed up. One side healed but the other side continued to seep for weeks. That's why I had to wait for 7 weeks for my first fill, which I am watching carefully to make sure it doesn't split or start bleeding again.
Teribear - Jani is correct, light massage is working for me, ok so they are only 3 days old, but it appears to soften with massage.
Funny note: I got call to jury duty AGAIN. I had requested an extention do to BC and they now feel I had enough time, less than 6 months. I called the Courthouse and told them people with Bc or any form of cancer don't always complete their treatment within 6 months. If I have to serve I will be doing it bald and vomiting...do they really want that type of juror? I wonder how they would responded to my saying, oh yes and I have to massage my breast quite often to relieve expander pain. Can you see the faces on the DA or Defense attorney? -
Vitamin K is a blood clotting agent, not a blood thinning agent. It's the "antidote" for too much coumadin or heparin. So foods with Vitamin K won't make you bleed. In fact, the foods with Vit K are rich in cancer-fighting anti-oxidants!
The very best thing for my pec/chest tightness and discomfort has been exercise. Initially, my PT did intense massage around the tight edges under my armpit and at the sternum.
Then, I got with the personal trainer at the PT clinic (they only work with cancer patients!) and started a pretty rigorous regime of stretching and strengthening. The next day I felt like my expanders were almost like breasts again, and I've had no discomfort since. Maybe it's just me--my body thrives on exercise--but I think the physical work I did opened up space and got the expanders out of my armpits!!

My PT did the same, and lucky as I was, her appointment was 2 hours after the fills. She gave me 3 back exercises to help with the muscles. I might try sleeping without a bra tonight as the PS says I need to keep in on, but the PT says it's too tight and is causing problems with my Le.
I may have misunderstood the "K: but I know it was from eating too much spinach and other "greens" that caused my friends bleeding. She's on blood thinners do to heart valve surgery. -
Hey Jean,
TOOOOO funny! You should just whip out the boob and rub it whenever you need to...that'll show folks what some us us really put up with on our road to recovery!
Traci, so very happy all's going well with both ends of surgery. Your sister is is my prayers. Going through a rough patch myself these days...just bitchy and ready for this stuff to be done with!
Gotta shop...yall take care!
Margaret
-
Jean,
I had trouble with my postop bra being too tight to wear 24/7, too, though that's what my ps wanted at the time. In fact, I was getting some skin break down from it! So, as soon as I could, I'd leave it off at night. And a couple hours during the day. Then padded up the areas that were digging into my skin.
So nice to hardly wear one now...
Anne
-
I used kotex pads under the parts of the bra that were hurting and pressing on the skin. They are very clean and cheap and do a great job, esp. if you have some drainage.
-
Hey Traci and Katie,
Did either of yall come home with drains? Also, was it overnight or same day surgery? Just wanting to get a heads up for my preop appt on the 12th!!! I hope there's no drains...I can't imagine wearing those testicles around for a month again. The ps is going to revise the lift on the right a bit and exchange the left. Righty is a bit under my arm (although not as bad as lefty-I soooo hate this expander!) and I'm not sure how much he's gotta tweak. As the days draw nearer, the more impatient I get! I'm also anxious about the surgery (I hate hospitals) and don't want to be there a second longer than I have to. I'm tempted to ask if they'll do a same day if I promise to go to the office the next day. I never sleep when I'm in the hospital...way too much noise and people coming in every hour to check to see how you're doing (I usually say "I'd be fine if everyone would stop coming in and asking how I'm doing!!!").
I'm just putting myself into a frazzle trying to do everything I need to do before surgery (grade exams, turn in grades, finish wrapping gifts [finished 50 have 30 to go] and getting all my stuff together for next semester [teaching 6 courses - my break starts tomorrow and I go back to work January 14]). Fortunately the grading will be done tomorrow and that'll be out of the way. I've just been snapping at everyone and should not be allowed to have any human contact until after the exchange! The muscle spasms are driving me nuts and I'm apprehensive about the amount of pain I'll have after surgery because of my allergies to just about every pain medication on the planet (codeine, darvon, vicodan, percodan, oxycontin)...not looking forward to any pain.
Yall have a good one!
Margaret

Margaret, My exchange surgery was Nov 2. I came home the same day with no drains
. I was put in a light weight bra, compared to the bras after my lumpectomies/mastectomy. I had script for percoset but hardly needed to take any, though I did get nauseated that evening from the anestisia. And yes the perm implants (saline) do feel 100% better than the expanders.

I am almost 3 months post bi-mast/expanders and I am still having pain and stiffness, I started PT 2 weeks ago and it has helped some. My PS (male) says I need start be weened from the pain medicine Hydrocodone. Today, has not been a good day for me emotionally, I am not really happy with my ps. I am going to try to start back to work next week for half days.
When you all mentioned bricks, turtle shells, and cinder blocks that is totally me too. My right arm had nodes removed and the range of motion is actually better than my left arm which was a prophylactic decision.
I have to agree this forum is actually better that I could dream. I never thougth I would want to join because I didn't think anything would help. But the more I read the better it was helping me. I thought all I need was my family but that is not the case. My spouse is great but not understanding like I thought he would be.
God Bless All of you girls, hang in there life is ahead of you.

Hey Margaret;
You are going to get through this next part, I promise. I was in and out in less than 5 hrs. NO DRAINS!!! They said it's rare to have them at the exchange, but I was still worried. I took vicodin for a couple of days, but ibuprofin probably would have been fine, but what the hell, it felt good to get a little loopy!!
Anyway, it all worked out just fine. It's been 4 wks since my exchange and it gets better every week. I had the silicone gels, can't remember what you decided on. They're getting softer every week which is a relief. They're still not like the original breasts, of course, but the cancer is gone and that's what's important. I'm a nice b cup which is what I wanted.
Look at it this way, you're going to need a rest after all of your shopping, you wild woman you!!!!
Honey, you're going to be ok. It's always good to hear from you. Hope Traci is doing well too. God willing 2008 will be a happier new year for all of us.
Keep us up to date, okay.
Take care,
gentle hugs to you all,
Katie

Hey Sheila and Katie,
Glad to hear about how easy the exchange was. I'm going with silicone. I know I'm working myself into a snit but I so wasn't prepared for the pain of reconstruction and I'm a ninny when it comes to pain! VERY happy to hear no drains!!!
This morning was just crappy. One of my students was supposed to take an exam Thursday. She didn't show up but sent me an e-mail about her mom having bc that metastisized in her brain. Mom's in a coma and has possibly days left. I told her to come see me and we just cried together. She's the middle of 5 girls, the youngest is 7. Mom's only 45. BC SUCKS!!!! I told her screw the test and we'd take care of everything in January. In the whole scheme of life, nothing is more important for her to do but be with her mom and family. I should never ever complain about anything again because it could always be worse and actually is for many.
Katie, on a funny note about how boobs feel, my 3 yr. old granddaughter was spending the night a few weeks ago and was cuddled up in a chair with me and said "Maw-maw, the boobie with the boo-boo isn't squishy like the other one!". I almost fell out of my chair laughing. I told her it would be soon. I've been done with my actual shopping since mid-November but always like to find deals I can use around the house and of course, overbuy for everyone else. My latest foray into the shopping areas is for wrapping paper (I have a jones for that stuff. LOVE Dollar Tree and Big Lots for paper). For the grandkids, I try to match the paper to whatever they're into at the time (this year it's Transformers, Disney Princesses, and the one I haven't found in Christmas wrap-Hello Kitty). I like being out in the middle of things... it's in my nature and I'm a sociologist and we tend to be nosy anyway!
Thanks again for your input about the exchange. I'll be sure to keep yall up to date on everything. Have a good night.

Hi! I had pain right from the get go (I couldn't stand even the lightest shirt over the mastectomy area even before the expanders. My PS wa sympathetic, but said if I wanted the recon to live with it and take hydrocodene. Finally, my Onc saw me and said he could take care of it and put my on gabapentin, which did help a bit and I wasn't out of it as I was on the hydrocodene. I've stopped taking it and am learning to live with it. I,too, am nervous about having silacone, as my PS said that if the saline somehow ruptures, the saline will just pass thru the body, but the silacone is forever. I'm not having my implant until April or May when I return home to Maine (am in Florida for the winter). Can anyone recommend a comfy bra (am currently wearing a walmart sports bra that is just so-so) and filler for the empty side? Thanks. Barbara
-
Margaret, your poor student. Reading that broke my heart. I had to do the same thing in college a few years ago. I cancelled all my classes and took care of my mom and went back a year after she passed. This disease is so brutal.
After going for the 100cc and swearing never to do that again, I did 50cc's last Thursday and still today I am hurting too much for another expansion. At this point I am wondering if my body is at its limit or if I should give it a couple weeks in between? How long did everyone else go in between expansions? I would like to be a little bigger but at this point I am not sure what to do. I am doing the stretches and the muscle relaxers and massages, hot baths. Right now I am going to just wait another week and see how I feel. Did anyone else push past this point? I know, lots of questions. I just don't want to give up just yet but......
Thanks ladies,
Teri.
-
Hey Terri, I am right there with you. I had a fill last Thrusday of 50 cc. Very sore and tight for about 2 days. Then was feeling so good the next few days that I went for another 50 cc on Tuesday. Felt very good until about midnight when I woke in full spasm. So tight and hurt every time I tried to move, felt like I was in a straight jacket. Took about 30 min of shifting ever so slightly this way and that until it loosened enough to sit up and grab the Tylenol 3 and Voltaren. Forced myself to go to the gym and work out the spasms. All has been better since. is right. Our pectoral muscles and skin in your case (I was able to have the skin saving mast) are saying slow down! Too much stretching too fast. I have another 70 cc till I am at my goal of 500cc. I have decided to do it in 2 35cc sets and space it out at least 1 week between. There is no pressure on me to rush this, my PS says listen to your body and go as slow as it wants, but I am anxious to get it all over with.
If I finish the expansion by xmas then I will have the exchange in February. I have requested a telephone meeting with my PS to discuss which kind and which size of implant is best for me. There is no question that I will have silicone. I trust the extensive research that has shown that the earlier health fears were unfounded. Also, the cohesive gel implants are built such that even if they did break the silicon will not migrate into general circulation. My question is what style of implant looks best. This is something that I do not know much about. I understand that there are medium and high profile implants. The medium are wider and rather flat and the high are narrower and taller. So to get the projection (lift off the chest wall) one would go with the high profile, but these are the ones that look more like the tennis ball under the skin that refers to. The medium profile look more natural, but don’t get the cleavage or nice look in clothes. I am inclined to go with the flatter, but more natural looking medium profile. I would like to know from all of you and from people who have their permanent implants your thoughts on this and any information about this.
BTW I find that at this point with so much fill in the expanders that I have to wear a bra. I walk quite a lot and find that I have a whole lot of pain around the edges (especially the lower edge) of the expanders at the end of the day. Really worries me that they may shift too far down? I wear my pre mast sports bras. I never liked to bounce while running so have these full support bras. I put a gauze pad on the incisions under my breasts as they are sensitive, but other wise feel very good wearing it. I think it is because they place some back pressure on the outside edges of my expanders – pushing the fluid to the center of the breast. It is especially nice to get some relief from the under the arm pressure that can get very sore.
Thanks,
Jani

Hi Ladies,
I had a total mastectomy of both breasts and immediate reconstruction with tissue expanders on Sept 24, 2007 and have found my breasts to be hard, tight and sore. Like one of you ladies said, it's like having turtle shells on your chest! I hate the way I feel, so I'm choosing to have the exchange on Dec 12, which is next week. I'm putting in small silicone implants and would like to know, have any of you had relief after the exchange? I'm hearing they are comfortable and softer, so I'm hoping and praying for relief. Thank you and God Bless you all for being there. KRose

Jerri,
I really took your email to heart and am taking your advice. I did not schedule an appt this week as I am still havinig spasms, just like Jani was describing. This morning I went into spasms just lifting my coffee mug to have a sip! I will go back next week IF I am out of pain. If not I will wait another and will stay with the low fills!
I do stretch quite a bit as I try to keep up with my workouts. I love pilates and what it does for me, and it is a lot of stretching. Jerri, I even shared your email with my best friend out in Iowa who feels left out of my journey since she is so far away (I am in Ohio) and she said now I understand more! I was told I couldn't get my surgery for exchange until the end of February anyway so there is plenty of time to expand since I am almost to the size I want anyway. Since I finally have lady bumps and they show under my clothes, I do not feel so all fired in a hurry to get expanded anymore. I can slow down mentally now too.
Jani what a great question you brought up about the type of implants! I have decided to go with silicone as well after talking at great length with my ps. I have a very narrow chest so I will probably do the high profile myself, yeah, tennis balls but you are right, I think the cleavage will be better and I really want that as I never had it before! That's my bonus! HAHA! I look forward to hearing from the ladies who have their implants already and can give us some wisdom on the topic!
btw, Jani, what is voltaren? My ps put me on flexiril (muscle relaxer) and I take motrin with that but it makes me so sleepy I can barely function. I hate having to decide whether I want to actually get anything done during the day OR be in pain. I work 3rd shift here at home so at least I don't have to struggle working outside my home.
What a blessing this board has been. I appreciate all the support. Thank you.
Teri.

I am sorry that your new breasts are smaller...
I think mine are ok... they are still bigger than my breasts were, so I am happy, but they still don't really look like "breasts", just a couple of lumps that are just now forming into what looks like breasts...
I just want to give you a hug, because I think you may need one !!

I had a unilateral mastectomy two years ago and just now had my implant put in a while back, it is a hybrid combo implant/expander and when its full, PS will pull the line and put a bandage on me. It is very soft and natural feeling filled with saline. I got my "cleavage" back, yeah! As a massage therapist I have felt what you ladies have under your peck muscles, no doubt it hurts, there has to be something to but on back to buff from pain, it seems wrong to put those rigid things in. I have felt them thru clients tissue on chest area, pecks don't adjust to hard instuments very well, so sorry ladies. I got off easy on this part, Sherry
-
Jerri,
I really dig you. haha. I like the way you explain things. Everything you said made sense and I am sure you helped many other women reading on the boards. I wasn't quite sure what CC was until I read your post, and then it made perfect sense. You are right, I am very eager for the softies! (that made me laugh outloud!)
But now that i do have my own projection, I am not as eager. I feel like I can slow down now and wait in order to have a better outcome. My dr has not really talked to me about the type implant to use yet. He is an excellent PS (according to my mast. surgeon, and many many previous patients I have spoken to, he actually did my mom's reconstructive surgery) but he doesnt' have much bedside manner. That drives me crazy but I'm told he is a perfectionist. I will ask him next time OR his nurse practicioner, she is awesome, to explain some of the choices for implants that i have. The only thing we decided on was silicone.
I would love to see the website you were telling us about! Please do post. I just worry about ending up with the wrong size. They just keep telling me, tell us when you are at the size you like. That is all well and good but I would rather them explain to me the sizes and all. I have no idea what size I am right now. I tried on my old bra but it was a really padded 34C cup which I only filled out back then because it was so padded, and how can i tell with these turtle shells anyway? They don't fit right in the bra. I think for some reason I have slipped into panic mode when I need to take a breath and relax and ride it out a little bit.
Thanks for helping me sort this out ladies.
Teri.

Hi Jerri:
Thanks for your comments some of them are very helpful, however, you have made errors on a few points.
Most all augmentations and many post mastectomy reconstructions are done in a single surgery, that is, the pocket is formed and full implants placed and voila instant breasts! So this is not an old or archaic procedure. I have read some women who had this done on this very website and they were happy with the procedure.
Capsular contracture is not caused by too tight skin. Anytime a foreigh object is placed into the body the body automatically forms a capsule around the object. In some cases the capsule contracts very tightly around the foreign object. No one knows why this happens in some people and not others, but there are a few things that may increase the likihood of this happening including a transient bacterial infection at the time of placement, subglanular placement as opposed to submusclular (maybe because the milk ducts can carry bacteria), ongoing infection in the surrouding tissue, seroma, hematoma and smoking cigarrettes. Submuscular placement, textured implants, and apparently saline implants are less likely to experience capsular contracture. I found an excellent website that describes what CC is and ideas on how to prevent it (like possibly taking oral vitamin E beginning 2 wks after placement), and how it is treated if it does occur. I looked at a lot of websites and this one seems to be the most comprehensive and informative and if you haven't done so I strongly recommend taking a look at it. Best to be informed about these things, right? http://www.justbreastimplants.com/risks/capsule-contracture.htm
From the research that I have done on the 'tennis ball' look it seems to be a very real possibility for most of us. We all have had our breast tissue removed. In normal augmentations the breast tissue is what soften the edges of the implants and makes them look more natural. All we have left is skin and not all that pliable muscle to cover the implant. My PS said that the muscle will somewhat soften the edges but it will still look like an implant. I have tell you that I have obsessivley looked at every recon using implants that I can find on the internet and literally hundreds of augmentations done on women who are AAA going to C or D - which is kind of like us, and this does seem to be true.
Many PS over fill the expanders and then leave the expanders in place to set. My PS says there is no reason to do this -- but I wonder... so I have tried to look up the evidence for doing this or not doing this. I have come up with no research that looks at this issue so I am thinking that the docs are relying on the idea that it makes intuitive sense. I am thinking that there are muscle experts in the world who have studied the nature of muscles for their whole adult lives and will probably be able to anwer some of these questions. So I have put together a series of questions about the breast expansion/implant process like how much and how fast can muscle stretch and will it maintain its shape once stretched, and how best to handle muscles that spasm, and such. I sent it out yesterday to 2 people that I found on the internet. One was identified as a muscle expert who was hired onto a goverment panel. I will send it out to a couple more today (maybe an expert in sports muscle injuries) and see if any respond. I will post what ever I learn that is applicable to our situation if anyone is interested.
Trying to tackle these issues in this way helps take my mind of how uncomfortable I am!
Hang in there everyone!
Jani

Hi Jerri:
Thanks for your comments some of them are very helpful, however, I think that you have made errors on a few points. I hesitate to write this, because I don’t want to discourage anyone from speaking their minds and sharing what they have learned. We all know how hard it is to inform our selves about this whole process as there is no one place to go to get the solid information that is based on good research. That is one thing that this forum offers us – in addition to support. We want to be very careful though that we are not going through this very difficult journey with expectations based on misinformation. To this end I welcome addition, correction and what not to my comments. To me it’s all part of the process.
So in response I have learned that:
Most all augmentations and many post mastectomy reconstructions are done in a single surgery, that is, the pocket is formed and full implants placed and voila instant breasts! So this is not an old or archaic procedure. I have read some women who had this done on this very website and they seemed happy with the procedure. Though I have to say it must be some painful!
Capsular contracture is not caused by too tight skin. Anytime a foreign object is placed into the body the body automatically forms a capsule around the object. In some cases the capsule contracts very tightly around the foreign object. No one knows why this happens in some people and not others, but there are a few things that may increase the likihood of this happening including a transient bacterial infection at the time of placement, subglanular placement as opposed to submusclular (maybe because the milk ducts can carry bacteria), ongoing infection in the surrounding tissue, seroma, hematoma and smoking cigarettes (and some other things that no one has identified yet). Submuscular placement, textured implants, and apparently saline implants are less likely on average to experience capsular contracture. I found an excellent website that describes what CC is and ideas on how to prevent it (like possibly taking oral vitamin E beginning 2 wks after placement), and how it is treated if it does occur. I looked at a lot of websites and this one seems to be the most comprehensive and informative. Have a look if you haven’t already informed yourself about this possible problem.

From the research that I have done on the 'tennis ball' look it seems to be a very real possibility for most of us. We all have had our breast tissue removed. In normal augmentations the breast tissue is what soften the edges of the implants and makes them look more natural. All we have left is skin and not very pliable muscle to cover the implant. My PS said that the muscle will somewhat soften the edges but it will still look like an implant. I have to tell you that I have obsessively looked at every recon using implants that I can find on the internet and literally hundreds of submuscular augmentations done on women who are AAA going to C or D - which is kind of like us, and, sadly, this does seem to be true. Though I have to say there is the odd one that does look ‘perfect’.
Something that has really caught my attention is that many PS over fill the expanders and then leave the expanders in place to set and some don’t. My PS says there is no reason to do this -- but I keep wondering about this... so I have tried to look up the evidence for doing this or not doing this. I have come up with no research that looks at this issue so I am thinking that the docs are relying on the idea that it makes intuitive sense to do it or not to do it. There are muscle experts in the world who have studied the nature of muscles for their whole adult lives and will probably be able to answer some of these questions, because pectoralis and serratus muscle is just like any other same typed muscle in the body. So I have put together a series of questions about the breast expansion/implant process like how much and how fast can muscle tissue stretch, will it maintain its shape once stretched, how best to handle muscles that spasm, and such. I sent it out yesterday to 2 people that I found on the Internet. One was identified as a muscle expert who served on a government panel.

Terri – Voltaren is a powerful anti-inflammatory, it’s usually taken for arthritis. It is prescribed to be taken in conjunction with acetaminophen. Flexeril works in the central nervous system to actually stop the signal to flex the muscle. I am not sure why Flexeril was not the drug given to me, but I asked my PS (who is in San Diego) and he recommended Voltaren with massage. Then my general physician is heavily into some sport and takes it himself for muscle spasms – so I guess that is how I got it. It does work very well for me. Neither Voltaren nor Flexeril is recommended to be taken for longer than 2 weeks though. One interesting thing about Flexeril is the long half-life of 2-3 days. This means that it takes 2-3 days for half of the drug to clear the body. So if you are taking the full dose of 40 mg daily this will build up over 3 days (there are some nasty side effects of both of these drugs by the way), plus the effects will still be there for a couple days after you stop taking it which is probably a good thing with the kind of spasms we are dealing with.

Hi,
Its been a while since I first discovered this wonderful sight. You are all so courageous. This sight has helped me deal with my bc. I have had the expanders in since Oct. 2, 2007. Fills are still a problem, but definitely tolerable 2 days later (only getting 60cc per fill). I am 51 years old and have never missed a period. My question is has anyones menstrual cycle been disrupted since having the surgery. My obgyn has told me that our bodies are in shock from all that has happened and its normal. I am going into my second month without getting it.I am very concerned.
Good luck to us all!!!!
