The breast I had breast cancer in and a lumpectomy has been really sore lately and tonight I notice some discharge coming from the nimple. Should I be freaking out or is this normal. I had a digital mammo and sono done 4 weeks ago and they were both neg. I had a cancer marker test done Tues and I wil get the results for that Monday but for now I am freaking about the discharge. I have never had any kind of discharge before. The breast has been really sore and giving sharp stabbing pain at the surgery site. Thanks

I don't think it's normal. How long ago was your lumpectomy? Recent enough you might have an infection? Does it feel hot? If it's too bad I'd go to the emrgency room, but definitely call your onc, pcp or somebody first thing monday.

My lumpectomy was Jan 2007 so I doubt it's an infection. Thanks

phoenix9873....Well, I sure wouldn't use the word "normal" to classify any nipple discharge, but with this freaky disease, nothing is normal. As hard as it might be to stay cool about it, I'd say get it checked out as soon as you can, but assume it's gonna be just another strange anomaly that will probably disappear within a week and leave you thinking "WTF?" Since all of your tests, so far, have been normal, I'd guess that if something's going on, it's not a new or recurring cancer.
Just check it out, hon. And try to relax and get some sleep in the meantime.

Of course you need to check it out!
I would not rule out an infection. It seems to me that we have ladies pop up with surgical infections for up to 2 years afterwards. The spot is small, they get radiated and it doesn't heal all the way, then it sits awhile and eventually gets big enough to get stuff coming out of it.
Do you have a temperature?
Remember, cancer in your breast doesn't usually hurt, so if yours is sore that's a good sign!

Its a myth that breast cancer doesn't hurt. Mine did and other women here would say the same thing. But I do think this sounds like an infection and it is absolutely true that post-surgical infections can make themselves known much later. Good luck.

I had my surgery March 29th and the infection set in June 19th. I had nipple discharge and my breast felt engorged like when nursing, it was hot, heavy and turned beet red almost overnight.
Good luck, Phoenix and definitely get it checked out.

Phoenix, on the chance that it's an infection, why not head to Urgent Care or the ER and see if they want to start you on an antibiotic? If it's an infection it isn't going to get better on its own, and you sure don't want it spreading.
Keep us posted, please! Hugs and prayers,
Binney
