Crystal, I went thru fills while on dd AC/Tax. My chemo was every other monday and I would either do my fill the friday before chemo or sometimes early monday morning before heading to chemo. It was almost easier doing it the same day as it was all a blur. If I did it the friday before I took 2 advil and 2 tylenol to help with discomfort. Also, my ps gave me a course of antibiotics with each fill, I'm not sure if this was necessary.
One of my expanders was quite lumpy but it did sort itself out as it was filled.
Good luck,
Jackie

I am day 5 post lat dorsi flap. I had a great sleep last night and my belly started to work a little better today. My pain is qutie a bit better. With pain med it is gone without, only mild -mod. I will take pain meds to get to sleep tonight but managed without since noon today. My drian is still flowing but getting under 100 today so that is good.
I can't wait to take the bandages off to see what is really going on. I have stay-sutures to keep the graft in place for 5 more days then I can have the dressing off for good.
Tomorrow I must start to think about Christmas!

Hello,I have alot of concerns about reconstruction as well. I had a single mastectomy{dcis} one year ago. I am 40 years old. I agree the mastectomy seemed easier than what all the reconstruction is going to be. I spoke with a plastic surgeon for the first time yesterday. I must say I am more scared now. Never did I realized it would take so long for the reconstruction to be complete. And that so much was involved. First the dorsi flap, tissue expansion then the implants. All will be done in one surgery, that he said takes 7 hours. Wow!!!! Then I will have to wait six months before implants will be applied to other breast. Sounds scary and like alot to go through. Also said I would have drainage tube in front that would be taken out in about 2 weeks after surgery and one in back that would probably stay in as long as a month. Now I question myself..... Is it worth all this too feel human again? I was also surprised he recommend silicone verses saline.he also says there is little or no pain involved. I would like others input on what I have been told. This is very overwhelming

Hi ladies,
I'm having free TRAM flap surgery on 12/17 to recon my right side from a Sept. '06 lumpectomy....a little behind you Nov. girls but I really do appreciate reading your posts. My dr. won't do an implant because I had radiation. I will have an implant on the left side for symmetry (hopefully -- not sure if symmetry is really possible with one implant!) I'm anxious to hear about your recoveries. I'm pretty nervous and agree with those of you that are thinking, why do this if it's not totally necessary?! Then there are times when I feel confident about going through with it. This is nerve-wracking!!
-
Traci,
Thinking of you, as you have your surgery today...
Hope you are doing well.
Hugs

Traci, hope you are resting easy tonight.
Hi Sahnnon, decisions are hard, hopefully whatever you decide makes things better. Foe me I was going from barechested mastectomy space to my new flap breast. Although it does not match perfectly and maybe never will, it looks already better than before. I hesitated on implants too because of rads. I can always go back if I am not satisfied...

Hey girls,
So, I'm sit/laying on my bed with about 7 pillows to creat a bed/recliner.
I am more sore than I thought but o.k. He was running 2 hrs behind....argh...but, it's done.
They are way smaller than what I wanted but, I'm the one that stopped with the expanders. Like my sister always says "find the blessing" well, I guess the blessing is I'll never have to wear a bra again.
My right one has a lot of blood on the bandage. The left one...none. I'm a little concerned about that but, I have to go see him in the morning.
Short, funny story:
o.k....so I had too much to drink about 5 years ago and had my boyfriends name tattooed on my hip in the front with a little heart. You can not see it with panties or a bikini on.
Well Dr. Eric Egozi came in to "mark me up" before the surgery. I was holding my gown and he said put your arms down and the gown slipped and he saw my tattoo with my then boyfriends name...Eric.
We...."laughed" the nurse said Doc was blushing and then all the sudden the heart thing starting beeping faster and Doc says...so is Traci look at her heart rate jumping. OMG!!!!
Did I mention Doc is a freaking babe?!!!
Well, gonna stop in with my May chemo girls and then crash. I'm gonna copy and paste this message so I don't have to re-type cuz it's kinda hard to type and hold the frozen peas on my chest!
LOL!
Big game tomorrow with my Boys....man, I hope they win!!!
Love ya girls. Good luck to those with surgery coming up.
I'll check back in a couple of days.
Hugs, Traci

I'm so happy that your surgery is over Traci! You sound like you're in good spirits which is very encouraging to me -- thanks for posting so quickly after your surgery.
Mary Ann, I do hope the recon will make things better for me. I definitely have myself prepared for less than perfection. My main issue is a collapsed-on-its-side sunken-in nipple that requires a bit of maintenance (it's gotten infected a few times) and a deep groove where I have a lot of retraction along a 4 in. scar. My lumpectomy took quite a bit of my right breast and they were fairly small to begin with!! The surgery also gave me a lift so my right side is now a few inches higher than my left. There are definitely times when I could not care less because the most important thing is the cancer is gone. Then other times I look in the mirror and feel like I want to do what I can to look better -- even if it does mean a big surgery. My husband keeps insisting that he doesn't care if I do it or not, that he supports me either way. I just want it over with...it's so hard waiting. 19 days to go......

Whoo-hooo Traci. So glad you are "done".
I am a "freaking" Cowboy fan too. Love Tony Romo. I have my surgery to exchange expanders for implants. I was second on the list, but they added a baby, so everyone is bumped back one. Now I am 3rd. My biggest concern is to be able to watch the game. LOL. I found out today that in our area the game will only be on Satellite TV. I have a good friend with satellite. I plan to have my hub drive me out to her place to watch. I can drink for 2 more hours and then nothing until after surgery tomorrow. I am so excited to finally have something on my chest besides puckered skin, ugly.
God bless all who are having surgery or recovering. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
Hugs to all, Sammie Kay

Hi all,
Traci- so glad you're done, but I do wish you had your perfect sized tatas after all you've been through! I'm thinking of you as you mend- my surgery isn't til 1pm tomorrow, so I may not post til Friday. MaryAnne, you're in my prayers for speedy healing. Best wishes to all,
Jill

Sammie Kay!
HOW 'BOUT THEM COWBOYS!! Woo HOO!!!
My one bro is driving me to my other bro's cuz I don't have satelite(sp?) either. That stinks.
Jill.....1pm....I didn't go in until 3 today and I was sooooooooooooooo hungry and thirsty. That's the only thing that is good about going to the hospital before the sun comes up.
Sammie...when is yours?
It's not bad girls. I'm a little more sore than I thought but with a pain pill it's not bad at all.
Tonight though....I called nurses on call because my right breast is bleeding way more than the left. I can see the blood through the bandage. I'm a little concerned but, I know if I call my Doc he's going to say go to the ER and the last thing I want to do is go there and sit for hours and then have them change the bandage.
I'm just gonna call my PS first thing in the morning. I have to go see hime tomorrow anyway.
So, y'all don't worry cuz, it's not that bad and I am so happy to have the concrete out!!!!!!!!!!
I'm up late tonight cuz you have to sleep sitting up and I hate that so I'm on the board till I literally pass out!!!
Hugs girls.

Hello all,
I had my surgery yesterday and am checking in with a report. Im feeling pretty good overall! I had an expander/implant exchange on the left breast (375cc silicone), with an augment on the right breast (150cc saline). I'm very sore, more on the augment side, when I move my arms (especially reaching for things) and getting up and down from sitting or laying down. It was a bit rough getting into and out of bed last night. When I'm not moving, I have very little to no pain (just a mild achy feeling), which is manageable. I'm taking 600mg Ibrupofin as needed for pain, and have Vicadin backup if needed.
For those who have surgeries on the horizon- I have a tip for nauseousness due to anesthesia. They gave me a patch to wear behind my ear (like people use on cruise trips) and I woke up with no sickness at all. Hooray! They didn't want to release me for my last surgery in Sept. (expander placement) because I kept getting sick. I think the patch made the difference this time. I also wore Sea-band accupressure wrist bands (available at Walgreens) after my surgery (just held the left one to my wrist, since I don't want to compress my left arm). This might have helped too- there's research that supports Sea-band use to combat nausea for breast surgeries.
I'm sending well wishes for those recovering from surgery. Traci let us know how things go after you Dr. appointment,
Jill
-
The first thing that I was given after my IV was put in right before surgery was something for nauseau. I would have thougt this was the norm, or does it just not work that well for some women?
-
Hey Traci...where do you find a babe doc?!! I have a running joke with my coworkers that all of my docs (onc., ps, etc) look just like the guys on TV....but unfortunately, it's "The Addams Family" NOT "Grey's Anatomy"!!!!
-
Mary-Anne..I hope I can be added to the list...my surgery is 12/3/07 for a bilateral Pedicled TRAM Flap with the removal of silicone implants, complete re-reconstruction for the second time.
As this day approches I'm nervious, but I see this all with a positive light. Thank you!
-
Hi all, my surgery was yesterday. It didn't turn out exactly as planned. My ps, found a lot of scar tissue and the expander was incapsulated in the scar tissue on the right side. That was the side of the malignancy and the modified radical mastectomy. Long story short, I didn't get the implants. The implants he chose were much too small. He had 400 cc implants and needs to put in 600cc, so all he did yesterday was take out the expanders, clean them, and put them back in with 600 cc fills. I was a little disappointed, but I want them to look right, so in10 days, he will tatoo me and then on Dec.27th, he will exchange the expanders for the implants and do the nipple reconstruction at the same time.
I am still running fever. It was 103 today . I am on Duricef for 5 days. I just finished 10 days if Levaquin. If I still have fever tomorrow, I will call the doc.
Well, I am tired and about ready for pain meds and sleep.
Hugs to all, Sammie Kay

Welcome to the newcomers. I tried my old underwire bra on,just for a minute. My lat flap looks pretty darn good. I hope I continue to be as pleased. Today my back was quite sore, felt like everything was tightening up. I removed all the steristrips and the incision is healing well. Id ONLY this !@#$ drain would stop putting out fluid. I am still getting 50-60/day,1 week later.
I had terrible nausea day1-2 , only controlled by Zofran.
I went out to supper tonight and ran into an old friend . To greet me he give my a hard slap right over my flap donor area. I thought I was going to hit the roof. Serves me right for doing too much.LOL.
Fists up!

Mary-Anne, I had left mast. w/expanders Oct. 23. Just had my first fill, which went smoothly. I won't be able to complete until after chemo. I have heard/read a lot from women with the tram flap. How about women who did the expanders...i was wondering if they are happy with their results, also..I guess I just couldn't face that much surgery again. Your very brave!

Hi everyone. Morgaine here. I had my DIEP to left breast this past tuesday. It was 10 hour surgery but I must say it is very pretty. And "pretty" is the first thing I said when I woke up from surgery and had a doc looking at my new boob.
My doc, Dr. Song at U of Chicago, said that I had an SAIA surgery and not a complete DIEP. From what I understand, he says that 30% of the population has some blood vessels that they are able to use better which means no muscle tissue is used at all. He says its rare to have people with one but that that I had two. Has anyone heard of this?
Also, I'm still nauseated but haven't taken a oxycodin since last night. Is this normal?

Hi Bella....just wanted to let you know I'm 4 weeks out of a bilateral pedicle tram and yes, it's a big surgery but went well and the results are wonderful. I still get abdomen spasms when i stand/walk too much but I can tell it's getting better. I start chemo on 12/5. Stay positive. Have confidence/faith in your surgical team and let yourself recover by taking as much time as you can to heal. I had 4 drains in for 2 weeks.....it's so much better when you can get them out. Be patient. I sometimes growl just being tired of not being back to some normal....but you just let yourself scream and then get back to healing. It'll be ok. Hang in there.

Hi SammieKaye, I'm sorry your surgery didn't go as planned and that you're still fighting a fever. Hope you feel better soon and the next surgery goes well. At least you will really be done then, nipples and all!
Crystal, I had expanders then implants and was very happy with the results, is this what you were asking?
I'm now 10 days out of surgery and feel pretty good although I did overdo it the other day and had a bit of aching again. I learned the hard way that it really is best to avoid doing any sort of lifting!!
Jackie -
Sammy Kay,sorry you are facing more surgery. Sounds like they have a good plan.
Fists up!

Hi Marina1, thank you for the support! I have complete confidence/faith in my PS team, they are great! My PS said I will have 4 drains when I come home and have 4 weeks of physical therapy also. He will also place the mesh in place as well. Do you have that? How long was your surgery & recovery? I know the Lord will be watching!
-
Hi, thanks to everyone for all the encouraging comments.
I am feeling good tonight. I do believe my fever is coming down. I actually had a 9 8.6 today, whoo hoo.
Morgaine, I haven't heard of the procedure you had, however, my ps said a big problem with theDiEP was having only one blood vessle to feed the flap if something happened to it(like a clot or something like that), so having more vessels is a good thing.
Good luck. Hope your surgery goes well. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Hugs ,, Sammie Kay

Hi Morgaine,
I also have Dr. Song as my ps, but only for expander/implants- my exchange surgery was Thursday. I think you should call the on-call person about your nausea, but also consider the following "alternative" approaches, which I've read about and tried myself:
1) Sea-band acupressure wrist bands, available at Walgreens2) Ginger tea, or ginger candy
3) If you can get in to see a doctor, ask for the patch they can give you for nausea- helped me so much with the surgery this week. Sorry I can't remember the name of it, but they told me people use it on cruise ships for sickness.
I think it's pretty normal to be nauseous after a long surgery, especially breast surgery.
I wish I could help with your other question, but am clueless about blood vessels and SAIA. I do have faith in Dr. Song though, and feel he would have done whatever was in your best interests for a good result and recovery.

Actually I was working from home the next day! I had one drain removed after 1 week (it clogged up!) and the second one came out after 2 weeks. They had to aspirate my back last week and took out 150 ccs. Well, I am a chicken, and when I saw all of the drainage, I leaned back and said...."I feel dizzy" and boom...out like a light! ha ha. Oh well, they are getting used to it...I passed out before my surgery too....my bp drops when I get nervous! ha ha ha. All in all I feel great now that both of the drains are out! I can rest on my side for about 15 to 20 minutes, can't sleep on my side, but at least I can roll around in bed. I am going for my first fill on Wednesday. I am nervous about it, but the ps says I only need 3 to 4. I was a 36B before, and I will be a 36B again. I didn't want to go any bigger, because I run and swim daily. The girl that got lifted with saline implant looks great! I am really pleased with the results. Things are really iching now, but I just deal with it. I just wish I didn't have to wear this darn bra 24-7!
-
Hi Bella. Yes, I had the mesh as well. My husband says the surgery was 5 1/2 hours. He was a wreck and thankfully, our sons tball coach came to sit with him a few hours when he found out he was alone. But it went well. I'm still recovering. I can honestly say, there hasn't been any "pain", but discomfort. If they don't give you muscle spasm medication, make sure you get it. The 2 things that I can say provide me any type of discomfort are my swollen breasts and the spasms. But it is getting better after 4 weeks. It just takes time. I sat for 2 hours the day after surgery and the 2nd day, walked down the hall. They manage your fever - make sure you blow on that thing they give you, it keeps your fever down and keeps your lungs clear. It's easier for me to be patient and let myself heal because i'm on short term disability through Jan....hopefully, you have the ability to just relax, watch TV and let yourself heal.
-
hi Heres2healing. Morgaine here. The proper name of the procedure I had was an SEIA flap. Now that I'm reading all the literature on it, I'm so glad i had it. I actually took my dog for a walk today without much problem (altho it was a much shorter walk). So I'm really glad Dr. Song did this procedure.
As to the nausea, I think I will try those Walgreen's wristbands. Thanks so much for that tip! How are you feeling after your surgery? Any pain? Dr. Song rocks!

Hello Ladies!
I just arrived home from my DIEP on Tuesday!!! I am doing really well. My surgery was the shortest that my Dr has ever done-6hrs for bilateral! My blood vessels were perfect, I guess. I had an epidural line in and that helped a lot with pain. I only ended up with pain meds for a headache and backache. I can't say enough about my PS- Dr Kinney (Milwaukee). He is WONDERFUL!! I only have one drain, the other 5 came out before I left the hospital this morning. I am not walking perfectly vertical, but am almost there. I kind of feel the new girls are a little smaller than I was thinking they would be, but I am really happy. I can have that changed later if I decide that is important, but I doubt that will happen.
I was very ready to come home this morning. I was sick of the crappy food, the backache, and not sleeping well.
I hope this kind of success to all of you!
