swollen lymph node

Hello I am first time visitor and have a couple of questions that really aren't being answered. I am high risk for breast cancer, have my 2x a year mammagrams and ultrasounds. Went today they found 5 cyst in left and 3 in right. The big thing was a large 2-3cm swollen lymph node in right axillary. I have had this for a year complained to Dr. he said it was a "fatty tumor" not to worry. Well now Rad. says not fatty tumor-a lymph node and he thinks it possibly is cancer. They want to do a PET scan on it. So could it be something else? Not been sick at all no fever he told me infection a possiblity, but cancer higher on list. Can anyone offer any advise answers another possiblity??? Guess I just need to hear from others "like" me. I can not talk to mom she would lose it.

Dear sunshine,
Please get the PET scan and make sure what it is. I had swollen lymph nodes and just kept telling myself it was an infection. Finally got a mamogram and I had tumor. At surgery they discovered 7 nodes with cancer. if it is a node with cancer it means that the cancer is somewhere in the body. The sooner you begin fighting this the greater your chance of winning.
I know this isn't what you wanated to hear but please keep pushing until you get definitive answer. I hope it is a fatty tissue , but make sure.

Push for tests - that is the only way you will know anything for sure. The good news is that they have decided the objects in the mammogram are cysts. And although I haven't had the experiences that you have - I can only say what I read through all these threads and boards. Get it tested - the hardest part is the waiting for test results.... Insist on tests and if you aren't satisfied with the PET results then push for more or find a Doc that WILL give you more. The scariest part is the not knowing - honest - and as hard as it is to guess and wait - once you know something you can get on with it. WHatever "it" may be. I am sure there will be some folks along that know more about lymph nodes than me and they may be able to help but I know you should definitely follow up and see for sure what it is.

I am surprised that your physician did not at least look at it with an ultrasound. A PET scan should be definitive. Push for the test and get to a breast specialst who will take this seriously.

Thanks for responses. JoelKM- this was during an ultrasound. The Radiologist is the one who told me this. My own Dr. hasn't called me yet. I am going to go to the Dr my mother went to and have a call in for an appointment. She is a breast cancer Dr. I am a little nervous ha really is more like it. Thanks God Bless
