Cooking Chestnuts
Comments

Hi Ladies,
I went to Trader Joes today and couldnt resist buying some chestnuts. I bought some last year but never cooked them up. I know they can be baked and they have to be scored somewhere before baking?
I am one to always buy something Ive never cooked before thinking I will do it and never do. I know these things are so good for you and Id really like to try them.
Any suggestions???

You're speaking my language...chestnuts! Just baked some last evening and they were delicious. Definitely score them first, or you'll have exploding chestnuts. They can be scored on either side. I put a small amount of them in a toaster oven on 350 for about 20 minutes, or until they look done (they pop open).
Some folks boil them, although I've never tasted boiled chestnuts.
Enjoy!

I just want to mention the scoring step is important. When I was a kid my mom decided to roast chestnuts in the oven but forgot this step. It sounded like a machine gun going off in the oven!!!

Yummy! I have also scored them, wrapped them in alfoil and put them in the hot coals of a campfire for a short time. So delicious!

Before roasting chestnuts you score them by making an "X" with 2 cuts on one side. As the chestnuts roast, the edges of the X open up a bit and the inside nut is easier to access.

OK its nervous time now. I scored 10 of them. They were a pound for $5.99 and inside the plastic lid it says to cook them at 400 for 15-20 minutes. They are in the oven now and I am nervous!!!
Its been 7 minutes no noise yet. You really have to saw those things dont you!!! I dont know how much a serving is. Do you ever wipe or rinse them off first?

They are out of the oven and too hot to handle. Even though I scored them all, I heard one go boom that makes the floor of the oven a little messy but not too bad.
I went for 20 minutes because not all of them were opened. Im thinking of trying maybe 350 next time just because I like a lower temp.
Im trying one now and they taste good and somewhat sweet. Dont think I can eat 10 right now though. They are bigger than I thought. They might not be the same cold but I suppose I can store them cooked.
When I was a kid the only experience I had with chestnuts was when my mom made chestnut dressing one year and burnt it. Thats why Ive stayed away from them for sooo long.
I did it thanks to all your help!!!

they are very yummy. If you cook them too long they get dry, but they are good. I would suggest peeling them before they get too cool. If you like them warm, just put them in a glass dish with a tad bit of water and wrap them or place paper towel over them and warm in microwave for a few seconds.
Enjoy - I grew up with them and have fond memories of family and tradition of my grandpa!
