Hi Pharmmom,
I did switch from Fosomax to Actinel due to GI distress on the Fosomax.
It worked for me, and keeping my fingers crossed it works for you.
If not, perhaps once a month Boniva is an idea.

Hi Tender,
I certainly hope so! It took 2/3 days to get rid of that heartburn. It was horrible. I'm on the Nexium for the time being. I threw out the last Fosamax. I'm done. I hope I have the same luck as you on this Actonel. My mom is on it and so far so good.
Thanks!!

I was on Actonel, taking a break from it now, and I do get heartburn but I think it's coming from another drug I am taking. I eat crystallized ginger during the day, a couple of pieces, and it works for me to get rid of heartburn. There was a time I couldn't bend over without coming up with gerd or heartburn, but the ginger helps that.

Oh, yes, Rosemary, crystallized ginger! What a great suggestion, as I had forgotten it.
Ginger is great with nausea too, in small pieces of the crystallized form.
I need to pay more attention to you and all the alternative/holistic ladies. I have my head too much in the sand on this respected avenue of fighting off the best.
Thanks for the nudge and to Pharmmom, thanks for your posts,

Tender,
Eating ginger supposedly keeps H Pylori in check. And they're looking at it now in a trial to see if it will help with nausea during chemo. Also there was a study with ginger and ovaries, probably using mice, and it seemed to help with ovarian cancer. I call it the spice of life, but I think it's actually a herb.
Some people eating ginger could possibly get heartburn from it, so you never know till you see which one you are.

I am starting Actonel this week. already have stomach issues - take 40mg Nexium/day and also chug lots of "mylanta' - some days none others lots. PCP also wants me to up my calcium to 2000mg/day and 800 IU vit D/day. Chemo is what destroyed my stomach. Now AI's have ruined my bones. In 15 months, I went from borderline osteopenic to borderline osteoporosis. I am only 51!!! Keeping my fingers crossed that the Actonel doesn't make my stomach worse.

Gals--Please let me know if you have success changing to Actonel.
I switched from Fosamax to Boniva because not only would I double over with it; I almost went to the ER a few times forgetting I took it that day and fearing I was having a heart attack. And of coarse with my brain I was always forgetting to take it on Fridays----I had to take Protonix the day before and the day after.
I'm taking Boniva monthly now and the problems all around, are less, but the price is prohibitive and since Actonel has gone generic and is available either now or before year end ---I may go back.
If actonel is less problematic I may give it a try.
By the way I have found protonix much more effective than nexium at least for me----
Yep Rosemary --I'm one of those that gets stomach problems with ginger---but not if I get it in a mixed juicer drink or in my stir frys and I use alot---guess the rice cushions it.
