Take a look at this article from the National Post (Canada).  It includes quotes from some of the women here on the discussion board at BC.org.

This was the front page article in the Weekend section of the paper.  The headline was a big "Thank God it's November!" on top of a garbage pail full of pink ribbons!

Great article! Thanks for posting it.

I have grown so weary of cashiers asking me if I'd like to donate to breast cancer. I've had to bite my tongue to keep from retorting, "Donate? Donate? I just gave both breasts. Is that enough??" It's not their fault they've punched my angry button, they're just doing their job.

I do believe in money going to research. I do believe in the good of the races and walks--for the support more than anything else. But until we find the cause, how can we find a cure?

    Excellent article.

As to the asking for donations in October - I just smile and say I've already donated.

    So glad it's over!

The local library had a pink "awareness tree" - an artificial tree decorated with pink ribons. I can hardly wait for the Colon Cancer Awareness Tree.

I had a big sigh this past weekend for the glad it's over club.  Pink kitchen utensils just can't fit in my color scheme even though I like a bit of pink in my life as a color.  I do feel a bit violated about a reporter quoting some of the thoughts people have posted on this site but again it is not protected and free to be perused by any and all.  One of those basic trust issues I have but heaven forbid someone come knocking on my door asking me about my participation at bc.org.  It just gives me a bit of the creeps.

Great article---I recently bought a kitchenaid mixer.  My sister was over the other day and said, "You know it comes in pink,"  I just looked at her.

    I thought she knew better.

Isn't anyone else completely appalled that she took posts from this website and put them in her article? Did all those women give permission? Or did she just sign on, and milk our personal exchanges for her article? Speaking of exploitation . . .

She even used actual user names. So if you posted something here and your user name is at all recognizable to people who know you, they can read your posts in the newspapers. Nobody's concerned about that?

This is really wrong and violates the rules of the website.

thanks--thought the article was very well done--I'm hoping that the bc.org people who were quoted were asked beforehand if it was okay for the reporter to use their posts.......if not.......dang, I'd hate for some of the things I've posted on these boards to show up in a paper with my bc.org name identified!!!!

I wonder where the line is drawn.  I notice in googling certain subjects I've wound up bringing up my own posts at BCO as well as those written by other

members. Just when is it considered public domain?

    MOTC- you are right.

She paraphrased a few things I had written but didn't use my name.

But after reading what she wrote, I know she reads my blog!

According to the terms of use of BCO everything we write here becomes property of BCO and can be used by them for any use- ie published as a book, etc. When you "agree" to sign up you agree to sign away the rights to your personal reflections and postings.

So, the writer could have contacted BCO for permission because that would have been all that is required since our words don't "belong" to us after we post them here.

    From the TOU:

By posting a message, uploading a file, or engaging in any other form of communication through a Forum, you are granting breastcancer.org a perpetual, exclusive, royalty-free and irrevocable right and license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, distribute, transmit, publicly display, publicly perform, sublicense, create derivative works from, transfer, and sell any such messages, files or communications.

MOTC, I did say in my post that this bothers me but I do understand that anyone can see what is written and is one of the reasons to stay relatively anonymous.  I have shared information with friends by PM's and tend to be even a bit fearful of that.  I surely have a basic trust iissue that started with my discovery of breast cancer and hope everyone forgives me.

grace, i should have read the posts more carefully because you did flag the problem first. Yes, I completely understand the trust issues.

I'm going to miss all the pink ribbon things. Sometimes I feel a bit guilty that our cancer gets so much support and awareness when other cancers don't. I think we're very fortunate to have a whole month supported to raising awareness and funds and that any negativity around it is disrespectful to the companies and stores that raise moneys and awareness. JMHO.

When I read the article, much as I appreciated what was being said, I was really taken aback at the fact there were direct quotes from this discussion board and particularly, references to who made the comments.  I've always known that everything we write here is "in the public domain" but I felt that it was a violation to include usernames.  But I did remember the specific paragraph from the BC.org rules that nonsurrender included in her post.  When the board recently switched over to the new format, I think we all had to reclick our agreement to the rules, and I very clearly remember reading that rule.  I don't like it much....okay, I don't like it at all, but it's one of the conditions that we've all signed up to.

This article is a good reminder to us all that if we want to keep our identities private, we need to be careful with our usernames and the information we make available publicly.

I agree with Amy. Maybe because I am somewhat new to it, so to speak.  But I think it's great, all the support and money raised.

I do understand that it can be a bit overwhelming also.

I too wish that other cancer's got as much attention as BC.

THE POINT IS, DON'T TRUST ANY SITE YOU GO TO, CERTAINLY NOT  THIS ONE. THAT'S WHY I DON'T POST MANY THINGS, BE CAREFUL OF YOUR PROFILE INFO, AND USER NAMES. SO SAD THAT WE CAN'T BE CONFIDENT THAT SUCH PERSONAL FEELINGS CAN BE "SOLD" OR "GIVEN" TO OUTSIDE PARTIES TO USE AS THEY WISH. AND TO REVEAL OUR USER NAMES IN THE ARTICLE, WAS MOST DISTURBING TO ME.

PS. NEW SLOGAN: RACE FOR "PREVENTION"

Yes, it really does make me feel very uncomfortable reading that article and seeing all of the user names and direct quotes taken straight from this website. Makes me even more glad that I don't post here as often as I used to.

But, as far as the October bc awareness month goes and all the pink - Count me as one of those grateful for the "month of pink". I'm grateful for the awareness and attention all that pink brings to breast cancer - It's taken a long time and a lot of courageous women to publicly stand up and speak about breast cancer - a cancer that not too long ago a great many women were too embarrassed to talk about or go seek medical attention for because of the very nature of it involving a "private body part". I wish that we could keep the pink ribbons in everybody's face year round....because I don't want anybody to forget that we have women dying every day of every month of every year from breast cancer....yes, we need to find out what causes it and we need to find a cure - it takes money to fund research to do that. It takes money to pay for mammograms and treatments for women/men who can't afford them.....I thank God we have a month that brings so much attention to our cause when there are thousands of other type cancer patients who get no attention or support. Personally, I think we need to make a big "pink stink" year round until somebody does something to stop this disease.

And, I'm extremely grateful for all the thousands of people and companies who donated money on behalf of a disease that I personally and selfishly want to see wiped off the face of this Earth - no matter how small the donation....I'm grateful.

    hugs,

    vicki

I've never been much of a pastel color person, let alone pink - BUT somehow I'm having to learn to embrace it's significance.  Quite honestly, I would prefer lavender or purple.  I use those colors a great deal and understand those colors represent healing.  I don't like the fact that many business "use" the opportunity for their marketing purposes, but then I see a business that truly, truly gives 100% of a day's income - not profit. There is a local drive-through

coffee kiosk OWNED BY WOMEN I might add that raised in excess of $55,000 on ONE day - Oct. 26th! The donation was not for research, but to give underserved women free mammograms.  Yeah for that I

say!  I would be proud to be quoted if, of course, i was contributing in some fashion.   BUT, I too found the reporter contradicting her words by her own exploitation of the comments from the site.  I start rads on Monday - should be done by Christmas.  Now talk about commercial-izm (but, let's not!)  Cheers all...Ruth

Boy do I have mixed feelings about this.  My initial response to the article was what others felt.  Many were being quoted?  From statements they made here.

I have learned a very hard lesson in the past week and that is everything we write is copied, pasted, sent to others, yada yada.  Its disheartening.

I know if I type my name in search, some of my posts will show up from bco.

Its disheartening.  For some reason, I didnt feel bombarded this past October in the Chicago area.  Was actually disappointed they didnt make a bigger deal about things.  I guess what upsets me most is that money should go to many places.  Early prevention is wonderful, but we need money for research.  We need a cure.  Too many sisters are out there suffering and fighting this disease.

Ah its sad.  I must be very careful with my choice of words.  Dont say anything on this site that you are not afraid to see printed, posted, pasted, somewhere else.

Nicki, I think it's also important to say don't put anything in writing online that you don't want to see printed, posted, pasted or forwarded anywhere.
