Hello,

I see now that I can't tab..
hi, I was just diagonosed with dcis on october 8th. I had a masectomy on the 25th. I start chemo on the 28 of November. I am in need of whatever you have to offer. I am on public assistance right now and am not aware of what all if any they will cover as far as some of the needs go as far as having a masectomy. I have never met or talked to anyone that has gone through this before so right now I am looking for all of the information and resources I can get. I was told I will more than likely loose my hair during chemo. I have never been one to wear scarves or hair weave in my hair so I don't know how I am going to react to the hair lose situation. I am a 38 year old aaf and we love our hair especially the ones we buy. (so i have been told. Should I start trying on wigs now to see what I like? As far as bras does it make a difference what type? I am a 40/c-d. Anything you have to spare I could use.
thank you

Sparker,
I just sent you a private message with the same info, but I figured I'd post it here, too, just in case you can't find your private message inbox.
First off, welcome you to the board. So sorry you had to find it but glad you did.
I was 37 when I was diagnosed with DCIS. I didn't have to have chemo, only rads although I did have a bilateral mastectomy (strong family history).
The hair loss affects women in different ways. My mom didn't loose her hair until well into her third chemo treatment and it didn't all fall out at once, just got really thin then came out from there. It grew back quickly, though.
Many women on the boards suggest cutting it off before it falls out, though. You might also want to check out the "Helping Me Get Through Treatment" thread for more info on what to expect during this bumpy ride...
There is also an "African American Women w/BC" thread located in the "Comments, Suggestions and Feature Requests" section - the very first listed onthe board. We're trying to get it moved to a better location, but the moderators haven't responded to that yet for some reason.
Feel free to send me a private message if you'd like to touch base. Know that you're not alone and help is just a few mouse clicks away!
All the best! -
Some hospitals sponsor a free wig program as well as Look Good, Feel Better workshops. They provide some very nice cosmetics as well as guidance on how to care for wigs, draw on eyebrows, etc. Best of luck on this rough ride. Get the wig before you need it.
