Harley, I think I had the same procedure you are talking about. On October 1st I had a bilateral mastectomy with immediate silicone implants. They are pretty comfortable now and I only had slight chest pain after surgery. I was on percoset though so that definitely helped. The worst part for me was the darn drains!! I had four and they were in for two weeks!! The implants are firm to the touch and I am pretty numb in the chest area but the cosmetic outcome is mostly favorable so far. Are you having silicone?? Suz41
-
Hi suz41,
I am having saline implants put in on Nov. 7th, if my insurance ever gets updated! I had to fight with them today, since my dh has retired from the Navy, effective today, and now our information has to be updated in the computer.
I had my bi-lateral mast on May 2nd, so my ps promised NO DRAINS! YAY!!
This week has gone very fast, with all these 'last minute' things I have to do to get ready for my surgery. I will be glad when it is all over, and I have my new breasts.
We should keep each other updated on any new developments... no pun intended!Harley
-
Morgaine, Deborah and Mary ya'll are added. Harley you're updated. The list is growing. I guess this is corny, but I keep thinking we should all be singing "All we want for Christmas is our 2 new boobs"
Good luck to everybody. Praying for excellent results for all.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers...

I had a TRAM flap several years ago. I ran into some complications down the road and had to have it revised. My questions is-- is it okay to do sit ups. I have heard many conflicting stories.
Thanks,
Linda
-
Yeah Laura! Congratulations.
Linda, How long has it been since you've had your revision? This may be something you want to ask your ps.

I would love to join this group. I found out I had lcis and dcis two weeks before xmas in 2005. I had 2 lumpectomies and radiation. The following December I had another abnormal mammagram. Surgery proved I had ADH in the other breast. Now 10 months later I had a normal mammogram. My oncologist wanted me to have an MRI, no problem. Since the mammogram came back OK, I knew the MRI would be fine. They told me 24 - 48 hours I would get the results, he called the same day to say they found 2 suspicious areas that need to be biopised. I had just recently gotten to the point that the fear of a reoccurance didn't comsume my life every day. I am going for the biopsy today. I told my oncologist I wanted a masctomy - but am so scared. He agreed it is time to take another approach. Based on what these results come back as will determine the type of masctomy I will need. I know it is the right thing to do but can't see myself going through with it. On the other hand if I don't do it - I don't want to be in this position next year - if something else shows up. I need help in making this major decision. This will be my 7th biopsy and I am done, but scared to death.
Thanks for listening
-
I'm in! Nov. 7, expander exchanged for silicone and lift to other side. It's almost exactly 1 year since I was diagnosed and I am so ready!

Hello Harley (and all others),
I feel for you when it comes to insurance companies.....I am scheduled to start chemo this coming MOnday and my insurance company is giving me "fits" about authorization for Neulasta which I have to inject a day after chemo to keep my WBC up. Luckily, the oncology nurses are on top of it and are handling the red tape for me....what a hassle!! Don't these companies know we have enough to deal with in our lives right now!
Harley...I've got my fingers crossed for you....I hope you get your implants on the 7th as planned!
Take Care.....Suze
-
Dear Lindylou: I am keeping my fingers crossed that your biopsy results were clear. So sorry to hear of all the trouble you are having. I am a woman who really valued my breasts, my figure, etc. I wound up having a mastectomy on the right side. I still felt like a woman, I still felt sexy, I still felt like "me", even though I was missing a breast (and still am). I know that it is only temporary and it was a step taken in the direction of preserving my life. . . .Hopefully you will come to the same conclusion and realize that you are who you are, with or without a breast! Plus, plastic surgeons can do amazing things these days and recreate a breast that looks better than the exisitng breast! Take care,
Colleen
-
Well I went for my biopsy the other day and they did not end up doing it. They could not find anything. They went from finding two areas of concern bi-rad4 to finding nothing and said come back in 6 months. I am still going through with the mastectomy - just have to decide which one I want.
-
Suze,
Well, I may not be having my surgery on Nov 7th, because now I have been told (on Friday) that the hospital has not be authorized. I guess they are not in network, so I need a special authorization for it. My case manager said I don't need an approval for the hospital... So I guess I will go tomorrow for my pre op, and hope they can get it straightened out.
Thanks
Harley
-
Dear Harley:
What a roller coaster ride you're going through. I'm so sorry they're putting you through this. I'll be hoping and praying that you get good news tomorrow. It's good that you're going to have the preop done too. One less thing that could hold up surgery.
I'm ready for Tuesdays exchange. Hopefully I'll feel up to checking in on you all on Weds. and read good news!
Lindylou, you sound like you've also been on quite the roller coaster ride. I'm so sorry. I'm glad you found this site though, because it will help you come to the best decision for you. It's been such a blessing for me over the past few months and I hope it is for you as well. Keep reading and asking questions. You'll know in your heart what you should do.
Take care of yourselves and you'll all be in my continued prayers.
Hope we hear from Marina soon to hear how she's doing.

Suze,
I will be thinking of you tomorrow, as you start your chemo... I was scared at first, too, but it went rather quickly, and it really IS doable! Having said that, I still don't ever want to do it again!
Good Luck
Harley

Katie,
Thanks! I will be thinking of you on Tuesday, as you have your exchange. I will pray all goes well for you.
Good Luck!

Hey Mary-Anne:
I'm doing pretty well. I'm actually having a nice glass of wine (or two) which is helping the nerves.

I'll work tomorrow, which will help with distractions. I have faith in my ps and have gotten so much encouragement from so many here on this site that I believe all will go well. Thanks for your concern and I'll be in touch later in the week after this is over and done with.
Take care and thank you all!!
Katie
P.S. Thanks Harley, I'm crossing my fingers for you girl!!

One more to add! I'm new to the site but love reading all the helpful tips in everyone's messages. My bilateral reconstruction is scheduled for Nov 21st, expanders to silcone gel implants. I think I've been overexpanded as I'm uncomfortable and really looking forward to having these things replaced!
Good luck Katie, I'm sure it will all go well for you. I am also doing silicone gel but will be meeting with my PS next week to discuss in more detail.

Hey Jackie - I added you to the list - November seems to be a very busy month. I'm trying to get organized before Friday, not sure how much I'll feel like doing this week-end. I only took a week off after my mastectomy, so I'm having my expander placed Friday afternoon and plan on going back to work Tuesday. In the meantime I'm trying to get my house cleaned, laundry caught up, preops tomorrow and Wednesday. We're having a Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow night at Gilda's Club so now I have to bake some desserts. Laying low this week-end actually sounds good. Harley - I hope things work out for you. Good luck to everyone. - Sandy

Wow, well, it looks like I am in good company. Please add me to this courageous crowd of women. I am Laura but since there is already one of those I will be Laura T. I was diagnosed with breast cancer on April 1st (not such a great April Fools joke) and had a lumpectomy and 4 rounds of chemo. It was time for radiation but I am opting to have a double mast instead because my mom had a recurrance after a lumpectomy. Her sister had the same experience. So here I am. It seems drastic but I am 44 and have a 12 year old and a 20 year old. SO...
Nov 28th double mastectomy and reconstruction - then several fills and then the permanent implants. I am recently divorced (isn;t THAT a kick in the teeth) so I am nervous about taking care of myself. I have hired a woman who will come in once a week for a few hours to clean the house.
My biggest worry is after the big surgery. My 20 year old daughter is coming home from college to help me for the first 5 days. But I just heard someone say that they needed someone to wipe their bottom, pull up their pants, etc for the first few days. I don;t want to ask my daughter for that much support.
I need to know what to expect so I can line up the help I will need. I have great friends but I need to tell them what I will need before hand.
So, as you go through the experience, PLEASE share your experiences with the rest of us so we can prepare.
May Ann - thanks so much for starting this group and I hope you are well.
Laura T from North Carolina

Hi Laura T.
Welcome! I will be thinking about you on Nov. 28th. My mast. surgery was a breeze! I had the surgery at Columbus regional Hospital, in Whiteville, NC. Where do you live in North Carolina? I live near Calabash, in Carolina Shores, NC... I love living near the beach!
Good Luck to both of us! My surgery is Wednesday, the day after tomorrow! If my insurance can ever get straightened out. I was told today at my pre op registration at the hospital that there is no authorization for the hospital from my insurance.
Take care... hope you post often. I had minimal pain from the mast., and now I will be having the reconstruction, and I think there will be pain with that, since my muscle/tissue will need to be stretched to the size of my implant... woohoo!
I had a numbing block before my mast., and will be getting one before the reconstruction... It really helped, because for the first few days, I didn't have much pain at all. By then, I healed and that really helped with the pain...
I am 44 also...
Hugs
Harley

Hey Harley,
I live in Raleigh but lived in Kitty Hawk for 6 years. I miss the beach a lot and took my 12 year old there for her birthday last month. I rented a place, took 4 girls from here and 2 more joined us from OBX. I had a great time and got to hang out with old friends.
I will be getting both the double mast and reconstruction at once. I am also having expanders. Please let me/us know any tips and advice as you go through reconstruction.
My best to you all.
Laura T

Laura T.
Well, I am having this done differently than the rest of ya'll, so I don't know if I will be much help.
I am just having the implants put in, kind of like breast augmentation. The surgeon will fill them as much as he can, to the point where he thinks they are the right size.... then he may do any adjustments in his office. I am small, but I want to be bigger, so I don't know how this will work... I was an almost B before my mast, and want to be a C.Good Luck!
Harley

Katie, harley, Minz, sjoc and Sandyk, Good luck to all of you. Wishing all of you a successful surgery and an easy recovery. Let us know how you're doing when you're up to it.
Laura T.
I know everyone is different but I had bilat DIEP and I didn't need help getting dressed or going to the bathroom. Don't worry too much, you'll be fine and your daughter will do whatever she has to do for you, I'm sure. Good Luck!
Marina, Hope you're doing good.
Blessings to all,
Alaina

Thank you, everyone, for your thoughts and prayers. I leave for NOLA in the morning. Just starting to feel some anxiety, as I've mostly been looking forward to relief from my stage I complication. I think I'm more worried about the flights than the surgery! I would also appreciate prayers for a safe journey for my young daughter, who is flying to NOLA alone on Friday to be with me and fly home with me next Tuesday.
-
Hey Ladies:
Just to let you know I had my exchange this morning at 8:30 and I was home before noon!! Everything went smoothly. NO DRAINS!!! Yippeeee! I'm bandaged up so I can't see much, but I already feel better and softer. I'll go in to see my ps this Friday to remove the bandages and see what we've got. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. I know that's what got me through once again.
Laura T. I was expecting the worst after my bilat. mastec. w/ immediate tiss. expanders on 7/31. I had all kinds of people on call because I expected to need help. It turned out I didn't. I stayed over night at the hospital, which was a tough night I have to admit, but only when I had to get out of the bed to go to the bathroom. Then they just kept the morphine coming and by the next morning I was eating and off the morphine and on percot. I was home by 5:00 in my own bed and sent my husband off to work the next day. I never needed any help going to the bathroom, even at the hospital. The only challenge/help I needed the first week was washing my hair in the kitchen sink and showering a few days after surgery with saran wrap around my chest and my husband used a hand held shower head to rinse my body off. He also emptied and measured the drains for me twice a day until they were removed about 10 days after surgery.
Sorry to be going on and on, but I just wanted you to know my experience and that even though the 1st 4-6 wks weren't fun, I got through it and I'd do it all over again if I had to. I can't believe I'm coming to the end and I was fortunate to finish in 3 months. Everyone's journey is different depending upon their treatments, healing and time table choice. I hope and pray that whatever you decide, that it goes as smoothly for you as it ulimately did for me.
Harley, You're in my thoughts and prayers too. Any news since Monday??? I'm thinking of you and hoping for the best.
Once again, thank you ALL for helping me so much through this experience. Mary-Anne, this Nov. list has been really nice. Any news about Marina yet??? I'll keep you informed of my recuperation and will be checking in daily to see how you're all doing.
Next.........nipples....The fun just never stops
Take care and God bless you wonderful women.
hugs to you all,
Katie

Katie,
Congratulations, it's behind you now!! So good to hear you are doing well and are more comfortable/softer. Keep us posted on your progress.

Jackie
