Hello,
I'm new to this site. My Best friend who is 38 and a single Mom of a 4 year boy just started Chemo. I live in Florida and she's and Atlanta. Please read the email she sent today. I don't know what to tell her. Sorry it's long.
Hey,
I feel OK today but was in the hospital on Halloween night for 5 hrs. (poor jayden) I had every test done because my fever was too high 101.5 (shouldn't be running one with low white blood cell count) anyway long story short, I may be opting out of chemo....the ER doc said it could happen each treatment and if you get a bad cold...it could kill you.....uh scared me, enough to know that this is for preventitive, they say they got the cancer and this is to keep it from coming back by only 5% in the next 10 years, it is the estrogen blocker that will reduce the chances by 9%.....so i have been asking myself all weekend......???? what to do, my gut says stay away from the chemo, it seems to do more harm then good, it seems that the ones who have had it get cancer back more agressive.... maybe not, because everyone is different. All I know is it is way too hard to stay away from germs and I had washed my hands 1000 times a day and Jaydens but he then touches the floor and here we go... I am NOT making excuses by no means....my hair is already gonna go....that's OK I just don't want to risk dying trying to live longer.....know what I mean? I had the nuelesta shot the day after (white blood cell booster) but it's time released you ache (bones) for several days....it obviously didn't boost fast enough as I began to shut down. I have a blood work appt and I scheduled to talk to my doc. (he must think i'm a pain) I'm just not sure he'll make me feel better though????? Love ya, Talk to you later

Just support her decision, whatever she ends up doing. The decision is not one that she'll made lightly or without input from her oncologist. She's right--chemo induced neutropenia can be fatal--we lost a bc sister last month out of our August chemo group. She got an pneumonia after the second chemo round and it carried her off. She was 34 with two little ones. Not to be alarmist, but it's reality.
You're a good friend to be concerned about her and to want to say/do the right thing. Like I said, just support her decision and listen to her.

i wish i could say more.
supporting her decision is the best thing you can do. you seem to be such a caring friend.
god bless..

You are a good friend. Keep on caring. You could also refer her to us for some moral support here, too.

Is there anyone she knows who could help her with her child? She really doesn't have to wash her hands or his 1,000 times a day. She sound frazzled and in need of some physical assistance. Family, anybody?
