DIEP

I am having DIEP recon on 11-24 in Pittsburgh. Anyone out there have any words of wisdom or encouragement?

Just remember that everyone is different when it comes to how fast or slow you recuperate. Take it easy after surgery. If you need pain medicine, don't be afraid to take it.
If you're taking any kind of supplements are herbal products, let your doctor know, there are some things that you shouldn't be taking before surgery. I was put on a multivitamin twice a day and an extra vitamin C tablet.
Recovery wasn't as bad as I expected. I don't remember a lot of pain. More discomfort, heaviness in the breast and pulling in the abdomen.
You'll do fine. Good luck to you.
God Bless,
Alaina

Just wondering who the DIEP Dr. is in Pittsburgh??? Good luck with your surgery! I hope that all goes well for you.

Gee Gee, I see from your other posts that you are maybe getting nervous about your decision on Diep. Many ladies have had that type of surgery (including myself) with great results. I am 6 weeks out of a bilateral diep. I had a couple setbacks but no regrets. I see you had your mastectomy in April of 2006, I did too! You will be OK. Keep scanning these boards, you will see alot of discussions and questions already answered. Also, you can make another appointment with your ps to ask more questions if needed before your surgery and help make you feel at ease. Feel free to message me if you have more questions. Good luck to you!

RubyTuesday:
Dr. Carolyn DeLaCruz is my PS in PIT. On the advice of some ladies posts here, I called her office and asked exactly what I am scheduled for and her asst said TRAM FLAP. I was so surprised. She is out of town and will be giving me a call tomorrow. Now I am more apprehensive than ever.

I hope this link will work regarding DIEP vs. tram flap etc.

Yikes, GeeGee, I'd be aprehensive, too if I thought I was having Diep and found out I was having Tram. How did that happen?
Good luck,

Hi, I had a bilat diep on 9/19. I was in the hospital for 4 days. I hardly used the morphine pump at all in the hospital. I was taken to my room at 10 p.m. on Wednesday night. I was walking by noon the next day. You can do it! The worst part for me was the drains and not being able to use my arms to get up and down. I'm looking forward to stage 2 to get rid of my dog ears (they're huge), but that's just cosmetic. I'm happy that I'm cancer free and can get on with my life. Be positive and make small goals for yourself. Get out of the hospital, get the drains out, use your arms, drive etc. Each goal will make you happy!

I am scheduled to have DIEP on rb on 11/19. I am very, very nervous. I had all of my preop tests done today. My onc said my white cells were 2.5 and red 10----I need to raise these numbers before surgery. But I am ready to get this over with. MAMHP-did you do a unilateral or bi? I am doing a uni. I am glad that you are doing well. Thanks
