Making a Difference

My dd is 6 years old and she joined me for the 2nd year in a row in the Susan Komen Walk ...... here is her story of how she makes a difference:
Because of Teryn, her teacher finally got her mammogram this month.
There is a school project each year and it's called Reflections. This year the theme was "I Can Make a Difference by ___________"
Teryn chose WALKING.
So, when we went on the breast cancer walk, she took her camera and took pictures. She had to do it BY HERSELF. She even managed to get a good pic of herself!! She took quite a lot of photos and I had no clue as to what she photographing
I developed the pics for her and was amazed.
I purchased different color poster boards, different ribbons, pipe cleaner, crepe paper and even a feather boa. I got glue for the glue gun, more tape, regular glue, got out her paints, markers, glitter paint, etc. I laid it all out for her because this was her project. And the rules are that she has to do it BY HERSELF.
So, she picked the feathers of course and laid the boa out like a BC ribbon on the white poster board (I surely thought she was going to choose the pink poster board). Then she used the glue gun and the regular glue to glue it on .... then she glued some pics on the paper and she asked me how she could attach the pics to the boa so she hole punched them and tied them with pipe cleaner ... (I thought she'd use pink but she used red, silver, striped, etc)
Anyway, she was the only kid in her class to do the project ... her teacher showed it to the class and then she submitted it.
Today was my mom-helper day and I went to the class. The teacher told me she loved Teryn's project and she said she couldn't finish telling another teacher about her project because she was crying. She said it was so emotional.
Teryn had taken pics of some of the posters of women who died. She had me and my friends. A lady with a baby. Someone's bib number. And of course, she had herself in the middle with her war paint on and pink bandana ...As I described this Visual Art Project to others, I realized how my daughter has made BC her own experience. It's not mine. Nowhere in the poster can you see that she is the daughter of a survivor. You cannot see which picture is her Mommy. She is in the center of the BC ribbon. It's her face with her war paint on. She could have been the niece, friend or granddaughter of a survivor ... or just aware. This little girl ROCKS and she doesn't belong to me, she belongs to all of us and she will keep making a difference in the lives of others ...
To us pink may not be pretty, walking may not be fun but little girls walking and gently asking for a 10 or $15 donation raise awareness. And one by one another woman gets a mammogram. Mrs Strohmeier got her mammogram this month and it was her first one and she is older than I am. -
Rocktobermom, what an intuitive little girl. Wow, six years old! You obviously have been quite an inspiration to her. Just goes to show you, little children CAN make a difference. You must be so proud!

That is absolutely the best story! Your daughter is really special!

Shirley & Paulette, thank you, I am proud.
I'll post a picture of it, hopefully tomorrow!
This actually happened on Monday or Tuesday and I copied and pasted my email that I sent out. So, the other night I got a phone call from one of the organizers who told me that she loved Teryn's project but the boa sticks out and the rules say you can't have anything project out more than 3/8" from the poster board. She said she was so moved by it and that DD has a really good chance of winning. She said "if the judges are as moved as I am, she'll probably win." But if it wins, it cannot go on to the District level.
So, they sent the project back and we are going to give it a haircut and try to flatten it with Modge-Podge and spray glue. Kinda going to be hard for her to do this but she will either do it or start over since I bought more supplies!!
I did ask her if she wanted to submit it "as is" and deal with the consequences if she won (being disqualified) or re-work it. I told her it was so beautiful the way it was and I would be happy no matter what she did. She said she wants to try to win ....
Ladies, I am going to make sure she doesn't ruin the spirit of her original. It's precious but I am her mom and will boast her talents to the ends of the earth.

They are both beautiful!!! (seen through tears) Let us know how she does in the competition.

Kelly...I'm so glad you posted the picture. The revised one is beautiful though I think the first one is terrific if it weren't for the rules!
Way to go, Teryn and Kelly!
-
Kelly,
A special poster done by a special girl, it doesn't get much better then that!!!
Let us know how she does.

What a charming little girl! I too like her final version - you go girl!
-
This is so special. She should be as proud of herself as we all are of her.
Hats off to you, Roctobermom, for raising such an insightful little girl)
-
Again, WOW! What a great daughter because of what a great mom!
-
You have an angel! What beautiful posters. I am so impressed.

Thanks everyone! I am impressed with her as well (beaming, actually). She's not just insightful and kind but she is really a fun person to be with. She told me after the Walk that her feet were "dizzy" LOL ... even the next day, she said, "Mom, my feet are still dizzy but at least we did it." Words that just touch your heart when you know she is only 6.
Again, thanks for being proud with me!

Update: I was at church tonight and one of the organizers was there and she told me that judges votes are tabulated and my daughter won!! It won't be announced for a while (she is off-track and then the school has so many activities) ... so in February she will find out that she won. I can't tell her but was told that I could tell my friends!!
She's on to the District level!
-
Awesome news!!! and what a wonderful thing for you to share with us. Your daughter is wise beyond her years and oh so talented.
Hugs to you both
-
TERYN - CONGRATULATIONS! You did a GREAT job!...you should be very proud! (Kelly, you're such a good coach.)
AND - As a Rocktober Girl...I am very proud of your creative effort! Keep up the good work, Teryn!
Love, LauraLou
-
That's nice Laura but she can't show her until February..........lol..Poor little thing has to wait until then to find out. Awwww, that seem's so cruel....OMG, that is three months.
-
She so deserves to win! But darn, how WILL you not let the cat out of the bag!? You must be so proud of her. And she should be very proud of herself WHEN she finds out.
Congratulations, Teryn!

Rocktobermom,
Your daughter Teryn is a true treasure....how lucky you are to have her and have that special bond. She looks like you...is that you in the avatar?
I was also touched another time on this site when I heard about a little girl who decided to wear scarves to cover her hair (to school even!!!) when her mom was going through chemo.

Got a letter in the mail yesterday, Teryn is getting an award at school for her project, 1st place, and got a letter from the next level ... she is getting an award from them. Don't know if it's 1st-3rd but it means she goes on from there. We will find out on January 15th what happened and what level it was. I don't know if it is just Corona/Norco City schools or Riverside School District.
