Aromasin + high fat meal
Comments

Unlike Femara and Arimadix , Aromasin has to be taken after a meal. The pharmacy info says that it was absorbed 40% more after a high fat breakfast. I wonder how many were told that. Since many of us limit fat, it is not at all sure that a meal will have enough fat for maximum absorbtion. I also wonder if taking it after the long fast at breakfast is important? I am sure no one has studied the absorbtion beween one meal and another, but the absorbtion study was after breakfast. Beth

Oh, I didn't know this. I take mine before bed, not at mealtime.
I guess I will take it at supper.... how high fat does it have to be anyways?
And what kind of fat?

I am on day 10 of Aromasin. I asked my Dr. when to take it she said it didn't matter-anytime! I guess I better read the insert. I am trying to limit my fat intake so let me know if you find out how much is necessary for absorption. Can't believe the onc didn't tell me this!!

Here is what Pfizer says about taking Aromasin, and a link to it's package labeling insert.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
The recommended dose of AROMASIN in early and advanced breast cancer is one 25 mg
tablet once daily after a meal.

Haven't heard about the fat thing, but maybe because it's a steroidal AI, fat helps it get absorbed. Fat is fat, I don't think it matters what type, rather just some (like nuts, or oil, or low fat yogurt...)
While we're at it, here are a few more tidbits:
Store at 25°C (77°F); excursions permitted to 15°–30°C (59°–86°F) [see USP Controlled
Room Temperature]. (I guess this means we put it away from windows where mornings may be cold)
Co-medications that induce CYP 3A4 (e.g., rifampicin, phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital, or St. John’s wort) may significantly decrease exposure to exemestane.
(Rifampicin is given in tuberculosis and some others, carbamazepine is Tegretol, an antiseizure med amongst others, phenobarbitol is an anti-seizure medicine, and St. John's wart is an over the counter herb used by some to counter depression).

Hi. I have been on aromasin for nearly two years, and I have been taking it in the morning, or else I'd probably forget to take it. That is, I take it before breakfast time. OOPS!
-
I have been taking aromasin for nearly 3 years. It states on the label from the pharmacist to take it 'with or just after food'. So I have been taking it just after dinner - I thought that was to avoid digestion problems.
A couple of times I was out for dinner and then took it when I got home, without any food......and no problems. So I don't know what the real reason for taking it with food is. I think if it were really crucial to take it with a high-fat meal, then that would be stated on the labelling......I hope.

There is published information referring to 40% higher absorbtion if taken with a high fat breakfast. That was read to me by my local Walgreen pharmacist and the oncology pharmacist at U of M. I also read it online from the Aromasin site. U of M said a meal was better than nothing and most eat enough fat. BUT women with BC are encouraged to eat lower fat and may not get enough at the meal they take it! NOTSUCH GOOD NEWS ABOUT D3 today. WILL ANY INTERVENTION REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR 80% OF ER+ WOMEN?bETH

I was on tamoxifen for 2.5 years and had aches and pains all over. Since I switched to aromasin nearly 3 years ago, the only s/e I have is hair-thinning. I feel pretty good on it.
But, yes, that awful midriff fat - I have actually lost weight : started exercising!!! I am now slim and fit - everyone tells me I have a good figure - but i cannot shift that belly fat.I don't know whether it's a post-menopausal thing, or from the AI.
Sigh.....

Sam did you start an AI in right after chemotherapy? I ask because I am concerned about hair thinning my hair is just coming back from chemo maybe an inch and a half. I took Arimidex for 5 years from 2008 two 2013 and I never had any hair thinning or any hair issues so I'm just wondering if chemo and a hormone blocker together make for thinning of hair?
