Acid vs Alkaline
This may sound a little kooky but maybe not. I went thru bc surgery, chemo, and rads in 2006 and when all the treatments were over, I threw myself into my work and other distractions. However, I've had a few reminders lately of how things were a year ago for me -- I was bald and fatigued, basically -- and I decided to see a Chinese doctor earlier this week and talk with him about what I could do to prevent a cancer recurrance. He looked at my tongue and told me my body was way too acidic; he switched me to an alkaline water and is going to teach me other ways to change my eating and lifestyle habits so that my body becomes less acidic and more alkaline. It does sound pretty weird, but there is a surprising amount of supportive research available on the internet. Bottom line, I don't want cancer to come back and if this helps keep it away, I'm game to try. Is anyone else familiar with this and/or are you following it?

I've heard about and read a lot about this as well. There are some who say it doesn't matter what you eat since your stomach is acidic all the time and nothing can withstand that. But I've read some research that says if you eat more alkaline foods and drink higher alkaline water, it forces your body to produce more hydrochloric acid to maintain the acidic environment of the stomach. The byproduct of that is that your body then produces more alkaline liquid into your bloodstream since it can't produce acid without producing alkaline as well. I'm no scientist so I can't give many more details without my head hurting!
I know there is a host of conflicting information out there and it is easy to get sucked down a crazy pathway, but I figure it can't hurt to eat way more vegetables than I'm already eating and to add a few alkaline drops to my water. It's cheap, easy, and doesn't alter the taste. Why not? The key, I guess, is how you feel when you do follow that approach. If you feel better, then keep doing it! I am doing some of this now, but since I'm still on chemo, I can't really quantify the effects.

I'm sure it's fine to try out.
I don't know that I'd spend a lot of money on it, or forgo conventional medical treatment in favor of this approach. I buy the idea that the body is pretty well tuned at keeping itself in the right ph balance.

I read up about it and bought the strips at whole foods. When I eat greens in moderation, my body changes into alkaline. The more I eat, the better. But it does go into acid right away when I skip greens and fruit, so no accumulative effect.
Lemon juice even does the trick, funny thing it being acid.
I believe Dr. Weil said on his website that he doesn't think much of the effects of acid vs. alkaline.
What I would not do is buying expensive stuff from practitioners.
Try to eat some veggies and test with those strips, you will be surprised. And we do know a healthy diet is suppose to do us good. On the other hand we have ladies here who ate super healthy and still got bc.....go figure.....

We had a very mainstream nutritionist as guest speaker give a talk to our support group and her main message was how important it is to make our bodies more alkaline because she said that cancer cells find it more difficult to survive in an such an environment and also because a more alkaline environment reduces inflamation. She advocated taking 6 fish oil capsules a day, linseed and generally taking in more omega 6 as most of us get too much omega 3 in our diets. I also am no scientist but I was interested in what she had to say. I just wish I was better at remembering to take the capsules!

Thanks everyone for your input. Deborah, my condolences on the loss of your mother to this disease; your website is filled with great information. The more I read, the more convinced I am that there is something to this and it isn't just another trend. I stopped eating red meat and pork a few months ago and feel much better; am still eating chicken and fish but not as frequently. Between that, drinking lots of water, and eating more veggies and fruits, I have to believe this is all beneficial to my overall health as well as possible cancer recurrance. I've been taking selenium supplements since last fall and am now reading lots of reports recommending selenium to prevent cancer recurrance. Vitamin D is also indicated for this.

I have been following (trying to, it's kind of difficult!) an alkalyzing diet for about 3 months now, since my breast cancer diagnosis. Edgar Cayce was a big proponent of it, and there are several good books I've read on it. Some of the information is conflicting (ie, one says lemons and oranges are great, they turn alkaline when they are digested, and another says they are acidic), but overall, the message is clear....and there have been well documented studies on the benefits of being more 'alkaline' than 'acidic' in our blood, our GI systems, etc. Try http://acidalkalinediet.com/recipes/, for some recipes and their links to discussion groups and stuff. I also read (very interesting stuff) several books, including books by Robert and Shelley Young. Go to Amazon.com and put "alkaline diet" in the search box and you'll find lots of stuff there.
My basic complaint about most of them are that they are almost vegan in concept. I like the ones that are designed more 'personally' and let you interpret your body's own needs. My body seems to need more protein, but sensible protein, not fats, hamburgers, etc. I am 'listening' more to how my body responds to food. If my body responds to something I eat with gas, bloating, constipation or diarrhea, or lots of belching, it is not something that is making it happy! Makes sense! Unfortunately, that means giving up a lot of the things I like to eat. But, I am finding new things as well. I tried kale for the first time; it's pretty good fried in a little butter with garlic and salt. I didn't react to it the way I do to cabbage, which I love to eat but "doesn't like me".

As I go through chemo, I'm going to try to adopt more of this into my eating; my biggest challenge is going to be giving up COFFEE and SODAS, which are terribly acidic and can undo a whole day of eating well with drinking just one soda. I do like herbal and green teas, so I'm hoping that I can break my addiction to coffee and sodas... wish me luck!!
I have to add that I live in a very rural, small town; it is almost impossible (without ordering on the internet) to find good alkalyzing foods such as quinoa, millet, a variety of good organic produce, etc. BUT, I will persevere! Any sources of supply through the internet would be appreciated!

Well I thought my oncologist's head was going to start spinning around when I told him about this acid/alkiline theory and about the chinese doctor that I had visited. He basically told me it was all BS and that I should stop reading all this stuff. I guess I should have expected he would give me the "conventional medical wisdom" but I was pretty surprised that he was so totally close-minded on the subject! Right now I just don't know what to think!

If all this is true we should be seeing much more cancers than we have now. I refuse to beat myself up over everything I put in my mouth.
I just heard on the news that tea may be good for bone density. I'm thinking it was green tea because that's what they showed on grocery store's shelves. Now whether they will find this to be true is another question.

Please be aware that in some states, it is ILLEGAL for oncologists to recommend or endorse any treatment protocol other than surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. If they do, they can have their licenses revoked. Some physicians are so scared of that po
Despite that - and thankfully! - many physicians of all specialties (including oncologists) have increasingly understood that our lifestyle choices DO affect our healing outcomes. My personal preference is to employ physicians who are at least open to investigating complementary treatment, because I'm going be investigating it myself. That way, whatever I do will be in concert with allopathic treatment, rather than risk conflicts between those treatments in my body!
Ultimately, the doctors I keep are those who will respond RESPECTFULLY to my questions with thoughtful answers or questions of their own, and remain open-minded if I bring up information that is beyond their scope, because that tells me that they are continuing to learn.
And the others? Well, I just fire them! Hehe! I realize that this may not always be possible with health plans, but certainly, it's worth a try to ask for another opinion.
One more thing: Remember, one and all, that we have the final say on our bodies and our choices! We need to keep it that way! So LOVE & OPTIMAL HEALTH TO ALL OF US!!! -
Abreast_of_life, I would question the statistics that 90/95% of bc is caused by a person in their lifetime alone. I think some cases are certainly influenced by diet or lifestyle, but there is compelling evidence that after substracting the portion of people carrying the BRCA1 & BRCA2 genes, other oncogenes are in the population as well. A company called Perlegen is now developing a test for some that have been identified.
Other studies have shown that the diet & environmental exposures of parents & grandparents can also affect the health of later generations. In mice, the effect lasted up to 7 generations. In an epidemiology study, scientists found that the generations who suffered hardship & food deprivation due to war or the depression, had smaller children & those children were more prone to several health problems. The effects continued at least one more generation.
These types of inheirited changes are not necessarily due to genetic mutations but to epigenetic changes. These are the changes made to the molecules that surround the DNA or affect how the DNA sequence is read. For example, our DNA is subject to methylation of certain bases that can turn off the reading of a gene. If that gene codes for a protein that can interfere with tumor growth, we can be left unprotected. The DNA would sequence the same, but the methylation can be passed to our children.
While methylation of specific genes has been linked to developing bc or other cancers, a new bit of information has surfaced which says that treatment with tamoxifen (and possibly AIs) may reverse the methylation on some genes, enhancing our ability to then fight off cancer cells. This may be the reason that those who take the drugs experience longer periods of disease-free survival.
If we grow up without the proper diet, or experience prolonged anemia, or suffer extensive physical trauma, out bodies may fail to act properly. One condition that supports a portion of your statistic is the epidemic of Vitamin D deficiency. Since D is esstential to support our immune system, a lack of D may allow cancers to go unopposed.
Most doctors don't consider Vitamin D levels 'medically relevant" in their practice unless they see ricketts or perhaps osteomalacia. Since many of us spend huge amounts of time indoors or wear sunscreen, our chances of being D deficient have skyrocketed over previous generations. Coincidentally, breast cancer rates starting climbing very fast when the women born to the Moms of the late forties & early fifties began pursuing work outside the home. They had much less chance of being outdoors enough to benefit from sunshine-induced Vitamin D production.

I am debating if I want to stop taking the Tamoxifen for an acid/alkaline diet. It's my understanding that as long as I take Tamoxifen my body will never be acid/alkaline balanced. I find the concept of Tomoxifen kind of bizarre. I am taking a anti-cancer medication that I might get cancer from! What's up with that? I don't trust the greedy pharmaceutical companies. I am confused. I visit my onc in January, so maybe we can discuss this. Hopefully.

To all for the record - Dr. Schulze endorses an alkaline body to fight cancer. Just one more credible endorsement for alkaline.
According to Dr. Schulze garlic is a wonderful source to alkaline the body chemistry. Every evening before bed I wash down with water 6 to 8 cloves of chopped fresh organic garlic. I don't care how I smell while fighting this disease. The results are what I am interested in. The 75 various sulphur compounds in garlic do a multitude of good things as well.
