The female sex hormone estrogen was also shown to affect growth rates in cattle and poultry in the 1930s. Once the chemistry of estrogen was understood, it became possible to make the hormone synthetically in large amounts. Synthetic estrogens started being used to increase the size of cattle and chickens in the early 1950s. DES was one of the first synthetic estrogens made and used commercially in the US to fatten chickens. DES was also used as a drug in human medicine. DES was found to cause cancer and its use in food production was phased out in the late 1970s.

This is from Cornell.edu.  I would think it reliable.

Please take the time to read the whole report.  I copied the above paragraph simply because that could explain why so many of us women in our late 30's and 40's are getting cancer so early.

Blows my mind.

I wouldn't be surprised. I make a point to buy hormone free dairy products and meat for my kids because of the growth hormones they use today (RBST, I think it is). Didn't know about the DES being used through the 70's. Scary.

I've evidently buried my head in the sand.

    I knew nothing.

Just one of those people that bought whatever was sold.  Assuming if it was FDA approved, it HAD to be safe.

    wow.

I've forced non organic milk on my kids for 19 years now.

    Scary is right, Nash.
