    hi everyone,

it is me again another question.

i have been on a beta blocker for around six years.

i never really had high blood pressure but i had horrible panic attacks. my pulse would run up. i have always been on 25mg toprol  lately my blood pressure has been lower. well  my top number has been low my bottom is usually in the  70's  i am starting to take half of the 25mg.  at the dr the nurse said my top number was 90 i believe it was a little higher . when she took my bp she did not let the air out slow she just let it fly.

well before i go on and on

do any of you all know the difference between a beta blocker and a alpha blocker?

have any of you been on one and had to go off?

so far i am going to try taking half. i don't think my dr even looked at my bp.

    i am REALLY nervous.

Beta blockers and alpha blockers work on different receptors in the heart. Beta blockers have been around for eons, and do help with the symptoms of panic. Alpha blockers don't reduce the heart rate as much.

25 mg of a beta blocker to keep the panic at bay is worth it. Don't judge your blood pressure on a single reading. Sometimes it's smart to invest in a blood pressure cuff from Walmart or Costco.

Basically, if you're not feeling dizzy when you stand up or change positions quickly, you're tolerating the med. You're really not on a dose that's therapeutic for managing blood pressure.

Seriously, though, please have this discussion with your doctor or nurse. Don't leave your health care team out of the loop when you have concerns like this.

    Hope I've helped a little,

    Anne
