Here is a picture of my Woodyboy!! I have copied & pasted it into my post!

This picture was taken at Intake, at NYC SPCA.He did NOT make those stains behind him.He would swell up & burst before he made..stains.

You can see he is sad, but Woody is always cool. He looks (and runs, flying, all 4 feet off the ground), like an Australian Blue (or Brindle) Heeler. He "Ba-Rooos"  when happy, but doesn't bark, like a Basenji. He has been trained w/in an inch of his life.I am breaking his prison training.MY dog is allowed to jump on me, and kiss me! Woody lights up my life. And my doc is happy for all the extra action. He is a true SERVICE Dog, and valiant, at that!Good boy, Woodyboy!!!

    Ugh--sorry to be so problematic, but I cant use Pb BECAUSE I cant (too senile) sign in to (Yahoo)!I've forgotten my yahoo ID!I try making a new account, but then they say they already HAVE someone at Yahoo with my email addy.SOO maddening!!

    Angel Fumi has  told me to email her the picture, that she will post it for me.So..it's not over yet!!

    What a GREAT looking dog! He looks so smart..... as though you could have a conversation with him....and I bet you do!

    Fumi, Thank you SO much!!You are so kind to bother with my crazy copied picture!I cant imagine how I can repay you, my beautiful (skinny) little sister, but...it's a long world!

    And to all the other ladies, I'm so happy you could see him.Isnt he a really old-fashioned-looking dog?He looks like Nipper ("His Master's voice"-the RCA dog. Or Buster Brown's dog, Tyge.

    And yes, we do have conversations.Like Rupert was, Woody is a marvellous conversationalist.The best conversations I've had have been with dogs.They are smart, and optimistic, an unbeatable conversation.

    Andrew Weil agrees.He says whenever he's down he needs canine therapy.

    Woody compartmentalizes.He clams up when I try to get him to talk about his "other life".Tonight I was cooking broccoli.Woodyboy got a nostalgic look on his face.And I said conversationally "You've smelled this before, havent you?"(We were cuddling on the couch watching 11 PM news.

    Woody looked away and changed the subject.

    But he  is enormously smart, to the point of knowing that when it starts to rain, and I turn around to head home, he will do all his business right away (rather then save it up to mete out in the exactly right locations)

    He has a houseful of toys, and he will retrieve any of them by name.

    He does sometimes confuse Huh-huh-huh the hedgehog with Quacky Duck the pheasant.But I understand that dogs cant see in color .I dont think my Woodyboy HAD many toys in another life.

    Thank you for looking at him.And thank you again, Fumi, for making it happen!!

    What fun it was reading this thread! I was excited to see your post of your dog...then no picture....then how to fix it....then voila! He's adorable! He looks so much like a dog they are using in commercials here ... he's grown from a pup with the family ....a telecom commercial...I love it.



    We're thinking to get a dog too. We're going to look in December when we get back from the US. I can't wait. You took him from the SPCA? We have a shelter here too and I've thought to look there.



    Sweet Woody..... great name. I'm happy for you both.



    Sooooo, how do you post here? Me too I'm a little challenged by this....I can't even get the smilely faces on!

    Oh my Joan, Woody is GORGEOUS!!!!  What a winner!

    Joan....what a lovely handsome dog you have there, he looks so lovely.

    I just prefer dogs to people, I surround myself with them, from very old and smelly ones no-one else will have, to a new puppy I have kept. I know I shouldn't have done this, her little legs were a bit of a funny shape, she didn't look quite right!  well, thats my excuse, and I am sticking to it ! She already has me wrapped round her little paw!

    One day, when I have some time I will learn to post pics, and put all my little doggy family online.

    My son and wife are moving. DIL says to me a while ago 'you'll have to get rid of all these animals, then you'll be able to visit' aaaarrrgghh. Disposable animals ??? NO way. Disposable DIL's ????? now there's a thought !! (she's a nice girl really, apart from getting a sausage dog from me a few years ago, banishing it to the garage , so that I just had to go and get it back. Still have the little thing, one of my old and smellies now !!))

    You just enjoy Woody, I bet he rules the roost already.

    He is a cute Joan and smart too....(I am trying to get my cat (17) to retrieve a toy....he's not buying...lol and they say old cats have the IQ of a toddler)

    I agree with the calming effect....they had a Retriever at the Hospital where my daughter had surgery.....that was very helpful even for anxiety ridden parents :).

    Joan -Woody is adorable.  I am so happy you found each other. Is he full grown?

    I have 2 cutie's myself and they are always there when I need a laugh, a cry or anything in between.  I love them to pieces.

    Thank you all so much, Ladies!I'm so sorry Woody can't see the nice things you've said about him.He loves ladies!!

    Consider him looking at you lovingly, and wagging big.

    He is "8 years old" So said the shelters, (who notoriously lie.So he could be more like 10)But my vet says he has the teeth of a 2 year old-had good care.And loooooots of training.And he still hasnt told me why he screams!loud! if I try to pick him up.But I kinda can figure it out.

    His face is awesome in that he looks hopeful and sort of cheerful.In the SPCA, tied to a shelving unit.

    Yes, Marilyn, he was found wandering in Harlem.New York City Animal Control took him to the SPCA.Where he stayed for a month.No one claimed him (although I know he waited optimisticlly).No one adopted him.Even at "8" he was "too old"

    SPCA was getting ready to place him on the euthanasia lost, when a guy from a no-kill shelter culled him.Steve didnt have room at his shelter, but he sent a post, with this picture, to the tri-state area, writing about what a really good dog Woody is.

    It was he who named him.He called himMr Woods, because Woody is brindle (TIGER-striped).He said he might not be the youngest dog around, or the best-looking...But an older lady in the country here, who runs a shelter for little , old dogs, saw that face and said "Send him!"We think he's just as handsome as he can be!

    People in my building were a bit afraid of him at first.He's not very dogly.He doesnt cavil, or wag at strangers, he never jumps or goes near.Unless invited.But he will look at you, with those eyes.

    By now Mr Woods is the star of the building!Everyone loves him!

    Me most of all!He has NEVER made one mistake!(Oh, except fetching Quacky Duck instead of Huh-huh-huh.)And he is so calm that in many ways he's more like a cat.Which is nice for me.He is sleeping on the futon now.Not trying to get my attention, not asking for anything.This is the joy of having an older dog, but Woodyboy is a prince among older dogs!

    He makes me feel like crying.You should see the look on his face when I dry him, after a trip outside in the rain.Grateful doesnt touch it.

    A dear friend, an artist, has done a photographic series on Coney Island.

    Yesterday she sent me as JPEG titled "Mr Woods at Coney Island". She took Woody out of that depressing setting, and sat him in front ofThe Wonder Wheel!She says since Mr Woods is a native New Yorker, he can be seen here contemplating the loveliness of the urban beach.

    (And a JPEG I can work with.I can put it on Photobucker or Flicker, and post it here!)All I need's time!

    Joan, I think Woody may have an excellent future as a visiting therapy dog for nursing homes and hospital.  He sounds so well behaved and a people person.  Hope you both would be able to do this since I think you are a natural cheerer upper also.

    Oh I love the story! Mr. Woods ... and Ms. Joan .... a good team.



    I share dogs with people on the street. Sauro has Nemo, Gaby has Paula -- both are setter types--and Floppy is a big shephard type ... the village adopted him when a tourist left him behind. Today he stopped by .... walks into the house.... tail wagging and waits for love, then lays down for a rest .. he gets a lot of love by the way. He frolics with Flavia's dog Jack...also left behind. I thought to take Floppy, but he is so comfortable with his tour of the town, that I think he would miss his routine .... up and down the street, sometimes stopping in to the tea room, or picks up the rhythm of a walker along the lake and follows for awhile. He's amazing.



    Can't wait to see the picture of Woody and the Wheel.

    Grace, thank you for this thought!Funny, I have a Sunrise aAssisted Care home right nearby, in fact we walk past it daily on our walk.

    I have actually considered bringing Woody in, since they have a (sad) sign outside saying "Visitors Welcome".

    My problem is that I think most older people , and activcities for them) are in the AM.

    And Mr Woods and I don't get up till one.We generally walk by between 3:30 and 4, when the first serving is getting ready for dinner.

    But it's a lovely idea.

    Marilyn, how perfect, to have town dogs! Floppy sounds wonderful, and your not taking him is SO kind!Because if he wants to, he CAN stay!(And I think he probably visits often!)

    When I was a girl, 80 years ago, if you lived in the suburbs, then dogs were always roaming free.We had an English Cocker Spaniel,(bigger than American ones).Nick stayed home by choice.He would sit on the front porch, mostly.He would try to chase the UPS man away.When I got off the bus from school (no schoolbusses.Public bus, way down at the corner).When I got off,I couldnt see my house.But I'd holler "NIIIIICKY!!" and in a moment I could see a black speck flying.Closer, I could see the ears flying behind him.Pink tongue, laughing mouth.

    Amazing.A dog on the loose, running down a street.No traffic.Except neighbors occasionally.If one drove by, they would drive by slowly, and say "Hi Nick!"<sigh> different times.

    Nick WOULD travel around our neighborhood every evening.He knew when cocktail time was at everyone's house, and he'd be there, begging for hors d'euvres.And then be home to dinner!Busy guy, he'd be sitting outsides a neighbor's house with all the other dogs if a female was in heat.Many's the time we were called and I was sent to fetch him home!

    Marilyn, You are Giancarlo will meet Woody soon!

    Madalyn, thank you for volunteering at a shelter!This is such crucially important work.Many's the time I wanted to do it .But you have to have willpower in the giant category.I knew I'd end up with a houseful of dogs SO fast.And still be bringing more.

    Yes, an older dog is a great dog to adopt, especially for people who are less young.People with kids need young dogs and pups.But people w/out kids arent so chained to the house and routine,and could do much better with a more laid-back type.

    Mr Woods' latest gambit is the placement of his squeaky toys.He has about a million of them by now.And I have noticed (duh) that he has placed them in strategic spots--at entraces to rooms, under the table..where I walk and will step on them.This way even if he is sleeping, he can plot my course through the apartment and always keep track of me.AND, there is always the chance I will laugh merrily and throw the toy for him!

    He's a merry prankster!
