Starting Chemo in September?? where are you ladies

hi-
I have no idea what drug they are trying.. they told me.. but.. It's going to take app. 2.5 hours to infuse, I know that, and I go for 4 sessions, one every three weeks. I start this Saturday. We'll see how it goes.
My son stopped saying his hair is falling out, but he's so clingy. He, too, has ocd, but at 5, there is no way I can medicate the little guy. It's really improved since he started pre-k, with OT and behaviour modification. He really is the light of my life.
Is there anyone on here reading this going to Roswell?? I so want to meet some other women in my area.
*AND, I went BALD today to Roswell. It's the one place I can go to, look and be myself, and not get stared at!! whoo hoo! I HATE hats on my head. Everyone at Roswell was so supportive. Everyone. It made me feel really good.
The dr. gave me some strong pain pills to fight off the neulasta pain, plus a script for lomotil for diarrhea. No more emend or steroids either.
Like Spongebob says: "i'm ready, i'm ready, i'm ready"
oh, found out today I am: neg, neg, neg!! (for hormone thingys)
I am grade 2, and stage 2b. I finally saw my path. report from August.

Urgghh.. got my second chemo today ( AC) and hair started falling out in chunks. Emend + Aloxi+Compazine is not working and I am really feeling nauseaus and seems like I will get sick again tonight.
I just do not have the heart to accept my hubbies offer to shave it off.. being sick to my stomach and bald on the same day..
Did I just whine again ?
Sorry gals..
-
I feel like I am way behind - I don't get my second chemo until the 18th. I am only every 3 weeks instead of you brave things on dose dense. My first go has been pretty easy compared to what you are going through. So I am on day 14 post first chemo and my hair started coming out today. One little itch produced a handful and although I knew it was going to happen, I just wasn't quite ready for it to happen today. And then to top it all off I am getting my period every two weeks since surgery. What's with THAT? So I scratch an itch on my head, get a small handful of hair while I was in the bathroom and have to stop and calculate dates because of the other arrival. It's like sheeeeeshhhhh. At least I havent' been having the hot flashes I was having a few mere months ago. The boyfriend had pretty much disappeared during the "needy" portion over the last few months but decided he can't live without me. I said so... explain this to me - Now you are hanging out with a pre menopausal now menstruating every two weeks, one boobed, hair falling out today woman... hmmmmm....This is a fairly new relationship really, only since April then all this stuff started happening middle of July. Perhaps I should have enquired about his taste in women at the get go.... lolol....Maybe he liked the look of my mauve harley davidson "dew rag"... MEN.

Well, got diarrhea again like clockwork, every friday after tx. At least I go to eat some good food this past week. Jello and soup now.
Tri: sorry to hear you're so sick. It doesn't sound you're on that many antinauseants. Perhaps you should get more. I chose the steroids after the first tx was bad and Kytril, too, and I've felt pretty good all week (had tx mon). But I seem to get diarrhea friday and then feel fatigued/really sick (not nauseaus though) for several days so I'm not looking forward to that. And yes, your hair falling out at the same time is tough, especially when you're sick and you see yourself in the mirror all bald. But my hair turned brittle and gross so it felt good to shave it off.
It sad to hear everybody's kid stories. What a scary thing for a child and then for you as the parent. I am going through enough just with myself although I've known some people who stay stronger because they feel they have to for the family. I'd probably cave and become a basket case so its best I'm not in that situation. Though one never knows I suppose.
Karyll: glad your man is sticking around. What a thing to add during such a time. I've been with my bf for 1 1/2 years so wasn't sure how he'd react to going through this. I gave him the option to go if he just didn't feel he could do it. He said he wasn't going anywhere and he hasn't. I don't know what I'd do without him.
Well, guess thats my morning ramble. Take care!!
-
Ok seems to have finalized a working concoction ( if not perfect)
Aloxi and 10 mg of steroids during infusion
Emmend
Compazine proactively taken every 8 hours starting from 4 hours from infusion
zanax taken twice daily for 1 week starting on infusion day
Ativan for the first 2 days after infusion ( my doc does not like it cause of its addictive nature)
At night I was quite nauseaus but it went away gradually, never threw up and was able to sleep yey !!!
-
Hi all,
Tri you sounded a little better in that last post, I'm so glad...good that you could sleep. I felt comatose my last tx.
Urbie I was sorry to hear about your daughter, good that she is doing better. I think my son is feeling a little better, but I'm not convinced that he believes me yet. I spoke to his teacher and she says his behavior at school is fine, he is focused...so that's good, but on playdates and at home he has been more sensitive and emotional. He knows there are 6 treatments, so I'm hoping when the last one is done we can just celebrate and he will get some closure from it all. I've decided not to talk about radiation with him...or the fact that I will still be on Herceptin, I'm going to let him think it's over.
Hey Paxton, sorry to hear "it's" back...you poor thing. Your BF sounds like such a sweetie...
That's my ramble. Off to pick my little man up from school.
Marietta
p.s. Karyll, I go every 3 weeks as well and have my next tx on the 17th (day b4 my hubby's bday, bummer)
-
Karyll.. what are you getting?
since I told my dr. I was quitting chemo, he switched me over to one drug, every 3 weeks, for just 4 times. I can't for the life of me remember the name of the drug!
I put a wig on tonight and my son had a fit. He was so upset, I took it off. I thought I looked cute, but he couldn't handle it and said I looked better bald. LOL poor little guy. Chemo #1 tomorrow, for this new regimine. I'm nervous ugh!
-
Hey Methusala
I am getting FEC x 4 3 weeks apart and then I go to Taxotere x4 3 weeks apart.
I get zofran and dexamethasone for first few days, then rely on maxeran, gravol and ativan for the next few. I felt "normal" by day 7 with a little chemical help of maxeran and tylenol.....and oh yeah, zantac and or pepcid... lol

Hi Ladies - Gorgeous day here in Virginia ~ the cool weather has arrived. My husband and I are taking the girls to the Virginia Wine & Garlic Festival in Amherst Virginia today. And, I am happy to report that my taste buds seem to be back and "a wine tasting I will go"! My onc said nothing about no alcohol or caffine - he just said that it may taste horrible, which it did. And Paxton, try an Immodium every hour if that diarreah won't stop. I have taken quite a few of them. Hope you all have a great weekend.
-
I'm feeling pretty sick today, seems how its gone the past tx's now. It usually last a few days so I'm hoping its not so bad this time. And at least my bf isn't off on a long hunting trip this time. That got to be long for me when I wasn't feeling good.
I increased the immodium so thanx for the tip. Wasn't sure how much of that I could take, but I did talk to onc last week about it.
It looks like such a nice day out here, too, but I haven't made it outside.
-
Sorry, you are feeling so sickly paxton....Getting my hair off was a blessing for me today - felt so much better. Countdown is on now till Thursday until I start my process again and hope that it goes as well as the last!!! I feel good right now, seems such a shame to slap it down again.. but here we gooooooooooooo!

Well it has been a wonderful weekend and the Packers pulled it off and beat the Redskins, ugly... but a win none the less. I have been so "OK" about my the idea of my hair falling out that I almost thought that maybe it wouldn't, just because of murphy's law and all. I was wrong. It officially started coming out in much more than normal amounts in a brush today. I made a big pile on the counter. I guess that I will have to make the head shaving appointment for early this week. I am ready and I am really a "bring it on" kind of girl so let's get on with it.
At least my taste buds are back in check and I was able to enjoy the wine tasting yesterday at the Wine & Garlic Festival. I bought a T-shirt that says.... "Wine is a constant reminder that God loves us and loves us to be happy". I usually never buy things like this for myself, but I buy them for others. Not this time, it is for me.
Paxton, I hope you are feeling better.
-
Ouch Urbie that hurts! Even though I live in California my roots are still in Washington DC, I was bummed the Redskins lost.... Cool t-shirt, the festival sounds great, garlic and wine, what's not to like?!
Cool new pics of Karyll and Trigeek...looking great ladies!
Paxton, how are you feeling today?
Well, day after tomorrow and I go back for round 3....
Hang in there everyone

Its been a rough few days. You'd think this sickness would hit the first week closer to my tx, but it starts Friday night. My onc says she doesn't really know what it is even; thinks maybe its from the neulasta. But I'm not nauseaus anymore and I don't have bone pain. Its fatigue to the point where I can barely lift my head and a feeling of being poisoned (which sounds like the chemo drugs to me). All I know is I have one AC tx left and I'm hoping the Taxol is more tolerable cuz this SUX!!
Its taken everything I have to wash up and sit here in the recliner.
Haven't heard from mary jo in awhile. Hope ur doing good.
Well, take care everybody and hopefully I'll feel human again.
-
Well I had a good day today. My insurance finally said that they would cover a wig from a "wig store" instead of a "durable medical supply store". What a pain in the ass this whole thing has been.... So I went down to the wig store and bought the wig, but I will need to have it cut and styled very soon. My hair is coming out very rapidly and my kids think that it is funny to grab a handful and see what happens. I don't think that it is as funny as they do...
I also found out today that I was accepted into the assisatance program for the Emend drug, because my insurance won't cover it. Yeah!!! I was so afraid to go to tx #2 without it. They will send it to me at no charge for each of my next three tx's. I will say a prayer of thanx for Merck Pharmeceulticals.
I am sorry to hear you are still feeling bad Paxton. I will say an extra prayer for you tonight.
-
Sorry Paxton, hang in there girl....

Hi Karyll,
I know where you are coming from, my hair started to fall out on day 14 also and I'm getting my period every 2 weeks too. If its not one thing its another. I had hoped for no period. I got mine the day of surgery and the first day of chemo and then every 2 weeks since. God we're lucky to be a woman, aren't we?
Takce care!

Also thanks to everyone that replied to my meds question. I still don't know what I'm going to do but I don't think I will stay with zofran. The insurance case worker was going to call onc. office and suggest we try aloxi (sp?) in premeds. I just don't want to be sick but it sounds as though I'm not as sick as some of you. I've had a few loose stools but nothing severe. I feel for those of you that are suffering. Just hang in there and keep fighting. I just keep telling myself that this too shall pass! Thank God all of these se are not permanent!!
Take care ladies!

we are here too. Taxotere Carboplatin and Herceptin. yuk

OK - I need head shaving advise... I called my hair dresser and she cannot see me until Friday to get rid of the rapidly shedding hair. I don't know if I can make it until Friday without having hair all over the house so I am wondering if my husband can do it for me (with my kids help). How do you do it? Is there a special thing that I can get so I won't get cut? Any advice will be appreciated
. I just think that this needs to get done tomorrow. Thanks!
-
I swear my friend shaved my head with a dog grooming device.. LOL
It was an electric razor with a shield on it. I think you can just buy them at any store for trimming hair. I was afraid to try a razor or anything, but this trimmed really really close. I am sure I have even seen them at WalMart.....
-
I had long hair, cut it into a bob, then into a full shave with clippers.
-
Hi Gals
I haven't been here for a while...took a long time to catch up!
Paxton -I'm sorry to hear you still are not feeling well. My prayers are with you.
Urbie - I had my husband buzz my hair off with the clippers you get from walmart. Your head might be a little tender tonight when you go to bed, I bought a soft cotton cap for sleeping ... it works good. I found the little stubbys left over from shaving stuck to my pillow and hurt.
Karyll & Tri - You both look good.
MJ's - I hope you both are doing good.
As for me I think the fatigue is finally setting in... not a whole lot of energy. Either that or boredom. Maybe both!.Why dust today...I can do it tomorrow! I haven't had any real sickness but did have a couple of bad days with heart burn. It seems to have setteled down now.
Thats about sums it up for me... same ole same ole
Hope everyone is doing better, take care

Hi Janice! good to see you back on. I have my 3rd tx today and am feeling pretty ready for it. If it goes like my last tx I will be happy with that. The steriods have me so bulky right now. I'm not used to my face being so puffy.
I've been reading this really good book, The Glass Castle, and have misplaced it! Chemo brain!!! so I'm bummed because I was going to take it with me today. Anybody reading any good books? I can recommend some, I love to read.
Urbie I hope you find a way to shave your head today, I remember when I realized it was time. I just wanted it off, I couldn't even shampoo it because it was coming out so fast and my scalp hurt so much. Once you do get it buzzed you may want to find someone to take shaving cream and a bic razor to it...
It is strange, my hair is already starting to grow back, it is baby fine and white! I asked my onc nurse about it yesterday when I went in for my blood draw and she said that is not unusual and it may stop for a while after this tx or even fall out again. My eyelashes have started to give up...:(
Well, I'm rambling. Have a great day everyone. Paxton I hope you're having a better day.
Marietta (One of the MJ's, where is MaryJo?)
-
Marietta - I am also reading The Glass Castle. It is really good. I have a stack of books to read and found that they week after chemo I couldn't even read! I was too spacey and kept falling asleep.
And, a friend of mine has a clippers that I can borrow today to have the "very, very, very short hair cut party" tonight. My kids are excited and really looking forward to it. It is better to include them and make it fun, instead of a sad thing that mommie is losing her hair. I will post a picture, but I don't know how!
-
Hi Gals,
2 out of 4 AC's done, now I am trying to get myself out of Taxol. Also posted a new thread under the Chemo group. Feeling really nauseus ( even after a weekafter chemo) slight GI problems and dropping energy levels, so I guess everything is normal lol.
Anyone talked to their oncologists about skipping taxol since it was not proven to help HER- gals ?
I just have a hard time taking the answer ' oh just do it, taxol is a breeze after AC' . If not needed why stress the body further ?
Thoughts ? Comments from my september chemo sisters ?
-
Hi All,
Urbie -- I never shaved my head -- I just had it cut really, really short. In fact, I never lost all of my hair, either. I am still pondering the idea of shaving my head since I look pretty silly. My scalp is white, my hair is very dark (mixed with white fuzzy hair). But it feels really nice (as thin as it is) to still have hair. I do have clippers just in case I want to do it!
Marietta -- I just read a book called Cancer Vixen by Marisa Acocella Marchetto. I actually laughed out lout at times when I read this. It is written by a cartoonist (in cartoon form) but it tells the story of her own journey with cancer. I brought it to my last chemo session, and the oncology nurses borrowed it and photocopied parts of it. Here is a link to the author's website. www.cancervixen.com
I have my third chemo (out of four) tomorrow and am dreading it! I had an allergic reaction at my second tx to the taxotere.
TriGeek -- I wish I lived closer to do the half marathon -- I checked flights and they are way expensive. In my past, I used to run all the time and have done legs of full marathons ....

Hey everyone,
I just wanted to pop in right quick and say I'm fine! Just been very busy the last few days-- had my third tx on Monday and still feel great, but I think I am pushing myself a little too much and need to rest a bit more. Today I drove six hours round trip to a job-related workshop and had a blast! The other folks in the class (mostly ladies) come from all over the state of NC and we have known each other a long time, and it was like a mini-reunion. They had not seen me since I lost my hair, but they all knew about my bc and were so encouraging and supportive. After class, we all went shopping and out to lunch and it was so great to get away, out of the house, away from the office, and not be at a medical center for a change. I needed that mini-getaway, but now I need some sleep. I'll check in again tomorrow!I truly hope everyone is doing well and best wishes to all!
Mary Jo (the other MJ)

Hi all,
had my 3rd tx today...found out my white blood cell count was very low, so I will have the neulasta shot on Friday. For once my insurance company didn't give everyone a hard time about it, yay!
Urbie I am going to have to go out and get another copy of the Glass Castle, I have torn my house apart looking for it...I must have left it somewhere like Starbucks....I hope your VVVSHP was fun and you love you new "do"!
Laurie, I am going to pick up the Cancer Vixen book, it sounds great. Thanks for the tip.
Good to hear from you MJ, you sound fantastic! glad you had such a fun day.
Hang in there Trigeek.
I think I'm going to buy some fake eylelashes tomorrow. I have always wanted to try them and this is great excuse to do something new (like I haven't had enough new adventures lately...lol).
Have a great night all!!
