2nd diagnosis at annual mamm
Anybody out there have a 2nd diag of DCIS after primary DCIS and invasive diag? I was only two months out from radiation when at my annual mamm(where they found the first DCIS and invasive) they found a local recurrence.

Newwave,
I am sorry to hear that they have found this dastardly disease again in your treated breast and say it's a recurrence. You appear to have the type of breast tissue that really shows the value of mammogram as a screening/diagnostic technique for diagnosing breast cancer, AND the value of "annual" mammogram.
I take it you may have had a lumpectomy with radiation, maybe other treatment like chemo, and at your time for your annual mammogram, both breasts were x-rayed, and some microcalcifications or a mass was detected in the prior surgery site. Sorry.
While I never had this occur personally, recurrence in the lumpectomy area is not unusual, but it sure does stink! Have they told you that with treatment, usually more surgical removal, your outlook doesn't change, provided nothing new in terms of type/aggressiveness of the cancer? That's the good news, and a point many feel as reasonable when they make their initial decision to have a lumpectomy.
How are you doing with all of this going on? Are you able to think straight? If you post some more of your past and current details like estrogen receptor status, grade, amount of DCIS and invasive cancer and margins, others who come along will be able to address those points.
Just wanted to let you know I'm sorry this has happened, and somewhat relieved you were able to find this recurrence in such a timely manner. I know it's upsetting though, to say the least.
I wish you all the best,

New Wave,
I am sorry to hear that you have a recurrence of DCIS. I had a similar experience. In April 2004, I was diagnosed with IDC/DCIS (42 years old; 5mm invasive, grade 3, stage 1, ER/PR -, lymph node negative). I had lumpectomy with sentinel nodes, chemo and radiation. In November 2005, I had a recurrence of DCIS - 1.1 cm; ER/PR -. At that time I had a mastectomy with immediate reconstruction (lat flap and implant). I have had no problems since.
I was a basket case from the time of the core biopsy to the mastectomy. I was very relieved to find I "only had DCIS" the second time as I required no further treatment. Receiving another diagnosis, even one with a very favorable prognosis, really shook me. But I feel great now.
Take care,
Anne

new to this.
Could you tell me what IDC and DCIS mean?

Hi Jigsaw,
IDC = Invasive Ductual Carcinoma - which means the cancer has spread beyond the initial site in the breast
DCIS = Ductual Carcinoma Insitu (sp?) - cancer is contained within the breast
Hope this helps!
Michele
