Did anyone hear yesterday's Fresh Air? Teri Gross was interviewing a public health specialist named Devra Davis about a book she wrote on chemicals and cancer. I missed most of it (just downloaded it so I can listen on my ipod at the gym) but caught a part about placental hair products that were commonly used by black women before the products were banned and that may account for the increase in breast cancer in young black women now.  Interesting.  Really made me think about the whole tea tree and lavendar thing.

I didn't catch the show, but I've read a study about placental products and the connection between them and early development and possibly BC in Black girls and women. Not sure if the products were actually banned, though, as there are still a few products on the shelves (like deep conditioners and the like) that have placenta - or claim they do - in them.

This is interesting.  I have a question and hate to sound stupid, but what is placental products?  I am kind of curious because my daughters hair is extemely kinky and coarse.  We use the relaxers and conditioners on her hair.

LuAnn, some companies use placenta in their products to help hair retain moisture (usually prominently displayed on the lable). Queen Helene makes a deep conditioner that I used to use at least once a month that had placenta in it. Not sure if it still does, though...
