    I found this report after our medical oncologist told us that ACE inhibors have in an initial test prevented the typical doxorubicin (Adriamycin) induced heart damage.  This was a study on breast cancer and if you send me a PM I will send you the pdf file (or you can find yourself with Google).  In a study with 5% drop out, 9 patients received ACE inhibitor and 9 received placebo. The mean left ventricularejection fraction (LVEF) with ACE inhibitor treatmentat baseline is 0.633 while the mean LVEF with placebois 0.778. After the six months chemotherapy themean LVEF with ACE inhibitor is 0.644 while withplacebo mean value of 0.633. The time and treatmentgroup reaction was found to be significant (pvalue=0.0000). The mean measurement of LVEF ofthe ACE inhibitor group did not show a significantdifference when compared from baseline to postchemotherapy (p-value=0.000).Conclusion: This study has shown that asimultaneous administration of an ACE inhibitor drugwith doxorubicin-containing chemotherapy regimen(FAC) has protective effect against decreasing changein LVEF.

    Well that's very interesting Jeff, and nice that you posted it!



    Doxorubicin-induced heart damage has become a hot medical topic as your doctor has suggested, as it's frequency seems to have increased with years out from adriamycin treatment. So, treated patients are living longer, and cardiologists are seeing cardiac damage more. Overall, the incidence of damage is still relatively low, I believe. I myself have had Adriamycin, and find my breathing during exercise is much more difficult. Nothing serious shows on ultrasound, thankfully.



    Now Herceptin-induced heart damage has been at the forefront, affecting many women by lowering their ejection fraction. It would be interesting to see if the ACE-inhibitor drug type would similarly help maintain their ejection fraction. But the mechanism of damage may be different with the Herceptin induced problems.

    Glad to be of some help to others.  As a direct result of information I gained on this thread from several hero's of mine, my wife may get Gemzar and Carboplatin now after the AC since the Taxotere didn't work.  The tumor board met and approved the GC .... conditional that we understood the addition risks and unknown efficacy in an adjuvant setting.  Thanks to all the great women who have helped my wife Karen and I through this journey!  You have all been an inspiration.
