Lexapro or Paxil?

Options

Hi Ladies,

my therapist wants to put me on anti-anxiety meds....I have another PET scan coming up due to my lung nodule (hopefully all is well and then this is the last one).

I think I don't want to take anything but here is the question

He suggested Paxil or Lexapro, I read on google that people gain lots of weight among other negative stuff.

Any suggestions which one is better? Anyone gaining weight? What about getting of the meds again? I don't want to be dependent on anything....heck....I don't want to put my body through metabolizing anything other than Femara and supplements....

God Bless

I tried Paxil.  One pill.  Made me violently ill.

Currently, I'm taking Lexapro which I seem to tolerate pretty well.  I've been on it about 2 1/2 weeks, so I'm just starting to see some benefits.  Side effects were morning drowsiness and a bit of a headache for 3 or 4 days.  That has gone away.  Also had a loss of appetite for a couple weeks.  I take it in the morning.  I have terrible insomnia, but I'm not sure if that is because of the Lexapro or all the steroids they're putting in me.  I absolutely cannot sleep without a sleeping pill.

For short term anti-anxiety, Xanax worked well for me.  Just makes me a bit drowsy.

I was always worried about taking a lot of drugs as well, but as this journey has gone on, it has become apparent that I need lots of help to make it easier.  My anxiety and depression were getting out of control.

Don't know about getting back off the meds..... I'll worry about that one down the line, I suppose.

No weight gain thus far, quite the opposite.  But again, I've only been taking the Lexapro a couple weeks.

    Hi Ladies,

Calico, please try to avoid Paxil. Gosh, if there was one drug I would like to see restricted to specific indications, it is this antidepressant. Mainly, because of a) it's withdrawal effects when stopping: they seem the most severe of all the SSRI's, and true care must be taken to wean yourself off with your doctors supervision b) yes, it causes some weight gain imo, and c) it strongly inhibits our liver's main metabolizing path, CYP2D6, and while this doesn't effect you since you're on an AI, nevertheless, a lot of other meds do use this path in general. So I urge you to avoid it unless your anxiety is OCD type, in which case it's a good drug.

Lexapro is a good drug, and is metabolized by CYP3A4, 2C19, and isn't felt much to run the risk of inhibiting Femera which is low in it's inhibition of CYP3A4. So, many of us on Ai's use it. Take care adding the non steroidal anti-inflammatory agents like Ibuprofen, Advil and the like because you run an increase risk of GI bleeding when adding them regularly to Lexapro. Beta blockers like Metaprolol and Amitryptilene are also inhibited by Lexapro through their use of CYP2D6, so that's not great.

Geez, before you know it, we're all going to have to carry computerized cross reaction gizmos...

Ativan is excellent in low doses for anxiety. It takes the edge off fear very effectively without the headaches, strung out feeling of some of the shorter acting benzodiazepines. In low doses, used judiciously, it's a true help. It works through CYP3A4,5,7, so I'm looking into this a little more, but so far nothing has jumped out as interfering with Femera.

How are you doing by and large Calico? Hope well. I love your quote about lies!

LottaQuilts, nice to meet you. I hope your chemo regimen is close to being done. You look beautiful in your picture. I like to make bed cover quilts, have done a few, but I cheat a little and by the premade squares if I find enough of them and sew them together and then pipe the cover. I've done primarily Holiday ones...hmmm it's getting that time. My sewing machine always jams though.(Sad face).

O.k, hope this helps you. Let me know if I can help you more.

    Thank you ladies,

    Lottaquilts,

the Decadron did that to me too. I am glad the Lexapro starts to see benefits for you. I need to drive my daughter to school so drowsieness would be something I rather don't deal with.

    Tender,

My therapist told me Paxil or Lexapro is NOT metabolized over the liver....go figure....I am protective of my liver lol since it went through hell and back with chemo.

Lexapro sounds better but I do not really think that I need the meds yet. He is suppose to work with me on my anxiety and sofar I don't see how he does that other than saying "don't worry so much"....

I am having my PET tomorrow and I am freaking out.

I was standing 12 yards away from a black bear in the woods (with her cub) and don't want to walk alone anymore for now lol and I need meds because I can't work out this way? (BTW she was very pretty and not dangerous at all, just very BIG)

My anxiety returning big time before my onc visit ....who doesn't have that? I have this dang nodule too that worried me sick for two years and I do not really feel comfortable even if the onc says it is now declared benign.

And of course my recent biopsy which was a vascular clip thank God.

Just the same old same old that everybody here is dealing with....

I guess reading and talking here on the boards is the better therapy Smile

I don't think I will be taking anything for now......

Ativan made me nauseous and I am worried anything else like this will too, so I don't even want to experiment with these just yet.

    God Bless

Hi Calico.  I've been taking Lexapro since shortly after finding my lump (3 months ago).  It has done WONDERS for me!  I was a wreck before going on it and it's really helping me deal with the stress of this illness.  I've really had no negative side effects from it.  I may be a bit more sleepy, but it's not bad enough to stop taking it.  I would definitely avoid Paxil.  There is so much controversy surrounding it--I would be nervous.  If you really think you'll be fine without either, that would probably be your best bet.  With any antidepressant, you have to be weaned off of it when you're ready to stop taking it.  It's never a good idea to quit cold-turkey.  Good luck with whatever you decide--sounds like you've pretty much reached a decision.

    Take care.

    Hugs,

    Karen

Oops, forgot to mention something.  This is my second time on Lexapro (first time was for some postpartum depression a few years back).  I didn't gain weight either time.  In fact, I LOST weight both times.  Go figure.

    Hi,

I am a 5 year Breast Cancer Survivor, I took Tamoxifen for 5 yrs and just started Femara a couple of months ago.  My hair is thinning probably for the Tamoxifen and from the Femara have a lot of joint pain. Also, I am taking Lexapro and sometimes Zanax. It seems to work so far. Is anyone else taking Femara and are you having any problems. I also thank God, I am still here.

    Thanks,

    Faysie

    Hi Calico,

I had taken Paxil for several years (way, way before the b.c. diagnosis) and must tell you that I gained almost 45-50 lbs from it! I am 5' 6", slender/curvy and small boned. I found that for me to feel healthiest I look my best at 140, but while taking it I ballooned up to 185 lbs. I never weighed that in my life and couldn't stand living in my own body.

Besides the weight gain I felt sluggish and flat, monotonal - with virtually no affect to my voice such that I was about as scintillating as a common garden slug. Though it would take a few weeks for me to been weaned off of it, I lost most of the weight, give or take 5 lbs, which is fine with me. I did want to tell you that I had to get my liver tested every few months anyway, just to be sure - so note this for all drugs you may decide to take eventually.

I am currently on the GENERIC version of Serzone (taken off the market), which is called Nefazodone. The real Serzone had to be taken off the market a few years ago because a few people died from using it. Nefazodone, though similar, is not compounded as the brand name, and thus can be used. I did take the regular Serzone for a few years, lost the weight and got my personality back. The Nefazodone does the same thing. I feel fine.

    With support,

    Pina

    Hi Calico,

Tried Lexapro and it was bad.  Got feeling more depressed.  My doc gave me Larazapam for test jitters and it worked so good I tried a very low dose .25 mg for anxiety especially before my period and it works wonders.  I don't have to take it everyday for it to work.
