How many people did a self breast exam and discovered a lump that was later determined cancerous?

I found both my breast cancers. I can't say I was doing the classic, traditional once-a month exams. I was in the shower & shaving under my arms with the first one (6 weeks after a normal mammogram) and just brushed my hand on my breast the second time.

To me, the message is to know your breasts, so when you feel a change, you are aware and can act fairly quickly.

I can't say I was doing an exam either.  I felt my breasts all the time-- never searching for anything.  I had no family history of breast cancer, and was only in my 20's.  But during a shower, when I washed my body, I ran my hand over my breast and felt the lump.  Because I had done self exams before-(or just felt the nooks and crannies of my body just to see whats what) I knew that I had never before felt the lump.  I was certain it wasn't there the night before.

I'm glad I didn't sit around and think about it-- I had an appt to see a breast surgeon the following week, and was diagnosed with cancer a few days later.

I did BSE whenever it occured to me to do one, but I also found the lump in the shower by accident.
