What are you eating while on chemo
Hey everyone, I am going to post this on several different threads so I can get a variety of answers. I finished my chemo on 2/19/07 and I was recently asked a question and I can't remember. A young girl my sons work with is doing a project for a class at school. They are designing a cancer center that is going to be built. They have to plan everything~including the menu for the cafe. They are supposed to ask cancer patients what they ate during chemo and what totally turned their stomachs. There is a chance, they will actually use the menu she comes up with up. The only things I can remember that I really wanted were jelly beans and hamburgers when I was taking Taxotere. I can't remember anything I wanted on while on A/C. Can you all help me out? I thought if she had input from some of the most wonderful people ever, if I might be more helpful than just jelly beans and hamburgers. Thanks everyone. I will let you know how she does. The project is not due until Thanksgiving but I would like to give it to her as soon as possible. Thanks again. , Bonny

While on AC, anything that I could stomach I ate, unhealthy or healthy. I did eat a lot of chicken soup, with rice or noodles and tomato soup with oyster crackers...an old childhood comfort food. And lots of cold things popsicles, ice cream, puddings, etc. And as strange as it sounds, I craved McDonald's cheeseburgers.
While on Taxol, anything I wanted but I'm trying to steer back to a normal, healthier diet since I'm almost done with treatment.

Three things that have set well on my stomach when nothing else does is pasta, rice, and mashed potatoes! I guess that means starches for me.

Thanks, everyone has been so helpful. I will keep checking and writing it down so that I can pass it on. You all are the greatest! Bonny

I can't say I ever "wanted" anything. Even when I didn't feel nauseated, I didn't feel like eating. I also went through what I called my white phase -- pasta, rice, white bread instead of my usual whole wheat, and milk -- mostly because of a sore mouth and tongue that made it impossible to eat anything spicy or rough textured.

You are all so helpful. This is going to help my friend out so much. I called her and told her how much you all were contributing and she is so appreciative. I am making a list to give to her on Friday. Let's hope they use her menu in the actual cancer center they are building. I will let you all know. Thanks again!

Well I have only had one tx, my first last Monday the 17th with very minimal side effects. Other than a teeny bit of queasiness the first couple of days when I ate "bland" foods, I have eaten anything and everything!
and I've gained 6 pounds! Ice cream and milkshakes have been a biggie for me. There are a few foods that taste a bit strange, and any tap water with chlorine tastes like paint (we have mountain spring water at home), but other than that, it's like cuisine open season for me! Yesterday for lunch I had a steak and cheese sub from Subway plus a package of Nacho Cheese flavor Doritoes and thoroughly enjoyed it-- and I didn't eat that very often before I got my dx! I have been eating many more carbs than usual and I must cut back on them for health reasons. I also crave protein a lot. For the menu, I would recommend to have some really normal (strange?) foods for the few weird people like me that are out here and then definitely lots of ice cream and milkshakes... hope this helps and good luck with the project!

Gee, when I was on A/C, everything tasted like sawdust or soap except for SALAD with Ceasar dressing! I don't even ordinarily like salad, but I sure ate tons while on tx.
Ladies, from our responses, it sounds like we're preggers, doesn't it? Only no one has come up with the pickles and ice cream scenario.

Tina, I have posted this request in a few other forums. Pickles and ice cream are on them. Not together though. Basically everyone is eating the same things for the most part. I remember that I enjoyed salads from Wendy's. The more I read, the more I remember. Pretty sad as I just finished chemo in Feb of this year. I had to ask my dh what I ate because I couldn't remember. Chemo brain. . .so true. Bonny

While on A/C, I ate a lot of noodles and pasta and drank a lot of flavored seltzer water because tap water didn't appeal to me. I also went through a phase where I ate a lot of olives. Now, unfortunately, I can't stand the sight of any of those foods! Prior to chemo I loved those foods. I recall someone posting to be careful about eating foods during chemo that you loved before chemo, because you might associate the food with the bad feeling of chemo and it will turn you off. Well, it happened to me.
I have been craving pizza for weeks and have been afraid to eat it for that reason. Now that I've had my 3rd of 12 Taxols and don't have any stomach issues, I think I may try the pizza..........
I did drink a lot of orange juice and eat a lot of frozen fruit pops, both of which I'm still OK with now.
Cool project, by the way.
