Traci: So happy to hear you found some relief!! I'm going to check and see if I can get an RX for those patches. I actually started feeling better, finally, yesterday. 5 days after my first 100cc fill. I go back this Friday and will get less. I have some pain pills saved just in case, but so far I've just been taking advil liquid gels and doing ok. It's all about the comfortable camisole for me. I can't wait to get rid of my collection when this is over and done! Right now I'm having an icy cold Corona lite with a lime and feeling just right!
Take care.

Hi Ladies,
Well, I had my appt with the guy who's going to do my hysterectomy. It's scheduled for 10/3. That messes up my plan to have the hysterectomy while I was in the "waiting period" after I had all my fills. Oh well, this whole journey has been one surprise after another.
The lidoderm patches and hydrocodone are still working real well for me. I actually was able to sleep on my side last night!!!!!!!!
That was awesome!
I get another fill Thursday. My left ..... is it a breast anymore????... has developed a lot of new stretch marks and I swear the "thick" part of my scar that took longer than the rest to heal is going to rip open. And, there is a flat part where the thick part of the scar is. Does anybody else have this?
I hope everybody is doing o.k.
Hugs, Traci

It has been quite enlightening to read your posts. Thank you so much for sharing.
I had bil.mast.12/06 and chemo from Feb.07 to July,24. I had 120 cc fills x 2 times and then developed mild lymphedema(had lymph node dissection with mast.). Anyway, ps stopped filling until after chemo. So, the day has come. Tomorrow I am getting large amt.(he didn't say how large) instillation of saline. He told me to come in early to get some valium for muscle relaxation before the fill. I am getting nervous reading about all this pain. I didn't have much pain with previous fills. I have obligated myself to work Thurs and Fri. Maybe that's an oops. LOL. I am a RN and will be working post-op care. Oh well, I have a high pain tolerance and hope it all works out.
Thanks for the info. I also was hoping to have recon done in Nov., but now have doubts as some of you have been told to wait several weeks after fills. I will ask my ps tomorrow. I will let you all know how it goes. Sammie Kay

I am back home after having the fill, he only did 120cc in each expander. That makes a total of 480 in each. I took 10 mg of Valium before the fill. After being home about 3 hours, I awoke from a nap with a small pain on the side by the left expander, so I took a hydrocodone, which I take for chronic back pain anyway. That seems to make things tolerable. I will be able to work tomorrow and Fri. I only have one post-op patient tomorrow and some computer work to do, so should be fine.
I got the estimate for lipo-sculpting the fad pad under the breast area and some around the lateral abdomen. It will be about 3600 dollars for the ps, anesthesia and hospital. That is after the insurance pays for the implants and surgery for exchange. Does that sound about normal for that charge? Has anyone else had that done?
My best to all of you. Thanks for being here. Sammie Kay

Hi ladies,
o.k.....I am convinced now that something is wrong with me. Somebody started another thread and some in there are getting 100 at a time!! What is wrong with me? My chest feels like there is a 400 lb man sitting on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just got another 50 cc's in each side today at 3:30 and I am very, very uncomfortable. It's not to the point of crying but, it's hard to breath and I can't believe the pressure on my chest.
I didn't have any filled after my bi-mast. I've done 50 cc's each time. I am up to 550 as of today. He says I need another 200 (extra) to get to a full B.
I am very concerned because mine are ....spread out...they are almost under my arm pits. And, I freaking hurt. I don't think I can handle another 200 cc's. Seriously. I've had two pain pills since I got home and just poured a glass of wine hoping it would kick the pain pills into 5th gear. Man.....I can't believe you girls who did so much at a time. Isn't it weird how different we all are??
I mean, I'm no baby.....the double mast was nothing (not really) but I was driving myself around in a week. This expander stuff is really hurting me. I put the lidoderm patches on too and this time they aren't doing crap.
I really don't think I can handle another 200.
Plus, my hysterectomy is scheduled for 10/3. God....I can't wait for this freaking year to be over.
Have a good nite ladies. I am definitely taking an ativan tonight!

Wondering if I'll be able to handle all of this with the bilateral, chemo and implants all at once. I'm scared silly.

Well Ladies, I have been reading all your posts and preparing myself for surgery. Your experiences have really helped me understand what I will be dealing with. I had a single mast April 06 and have now just decided to have reconstruction. Met with the ps and set a date for Oct 22 to start the expansion process. Yesterday my oncs nurse called and said they didn't want me to start it yet as I have a CT scan in November to see if any of the spots on my liver (which they saw in July) have changed.
I am really bummed out as I was really ready to get this started. I will continue to follow your paths and hope all of you get the new breasts you deserve.
-
My pain has gotten worse. Hydrocodone nor the patches are working anymore. I wake up like every two hours.
My onc prescribed Percacet (sp?) which I threw up an hour later. Anyone have any suggestions? I don't think I can handle four more.
I am so uncomfortable. I just want to lay down and go to sleep.

Traci, I am so sorry about the pain you are experiencing, but I really know how you feel!! but the last 2 fills I took xanax 0.5mg just prior to my appt. and it really helped- believe me I would almost have a panic attack just dreading going to my fill because I was so scared of the pain and discomfort. The PS gave me the muscle relaxer flexaril-but I can't take that med it makes me feel horrible- IMO the xanax works much better, I find it relaxes me and my chest muscle , making the fill so much easier. I also have been alternating tylenol ES and advil every 4 hrs- and have not had to take anymore xanax since my fill. I got 75cc fill yesterday and so far I am doing good. Hope this helps.. Susan

Hi Traci,
I definitely feel your pain. The no sleeping thing is the worst part. I usually have the biggest problem sleeping for the first 2-3 days after my fill. What I do to get some relief is dose up on ibuprofen (4 of the 200mg OTC kind) and take 10mg of Flexeril. That allows me about 4 hrs of sleep. During the day, I do the same ibuprofen and 5 mg of the Flexeril which makes being awake somewhat tolerable. I'm religious about the ibuprofen, taking it every 4 hours to take some of the pain away. I'm at 620cc's in the expander (need to get to 800) and a good part of it is under my armpit. Its feels weird because I don't have much feeling there since the mast and SNB which involved taking out a few extra nodes due to a false-positive result. The top of the expander is now at my collarbone which looks very odd especially when I wear a scoop necked shirt! I just keep telling myself that this will be worth it in the end. I hope you finally get some rest. Take care.

Traci:
I'm so sorry your pain hasn't subsided. I'm with Margaret as far as the advil goes. I take 2 liquidgels every four hours almost every day after the fill. Once things settled I didn't need as much, but that took four days after my last fill . I know it's not good to take so much, but it takes the edge off the muscle pain as long as I keep it in my system. Whatever it takes to help after these fills. I also have xanax 0.5 mg, (like a valium) I call it "my happy pill". It's an anti-anxiety med. It totally helps relax you which will relax the muscles as well. Pain can cause anxiety too. I haven't taken one yet today, but I know it's there if I need it. I'm pretty tight and sore after having my 100cc fill yesterday. I'm not looking forward to my last one in a couple of wks.
You need to get in touch with the Dr. on call for either your PS or primary care M.D. tonight if this pain isn't improving. At least talk with one of them and see what they say. If the percocet is making you sick, (don't take on an empty tummy) maybe they can prescribe something else.
Your in my thoughts, as well as everyone else's who's reading this today. Give your Dr. a call while it's still early in the evening, okay. Let us know how you're doing.
Take care,
Katie

Scared or not it looks like it's a go for this wednesday, Sept 26th. I have seen all three of my Drs, BS, PS, and my PM Surgeon, my 2 cardios cleared me for surgery. (one will actually be part of the surgical team as she will be relocating my PM). The only issue seems to be my GP's fill-in "Traveling Dr" (I have never heard of this in LA).
Any way this jerk said he may stop my surgery because my BP was high, 160/90. I was shocked he said that with laughter in his voice, like I was getting a boob job not a life and death surgery. I was really mad. He claimed the hospital needed a cardo clearance, and he may not give it...GREAT. He thinks he knows more than my cardio and this idiot had never seen me before and will never see me again. I did stopped short of tellling him I'd have his license if he canceled my surgery...but if he does he will awake on Thursday to a massive lawsuit. -
I kept telling myself that it would be worth it in the end. Being on the other side now, I can tell you that it definitely is!
I was so miserable with my expanders. My doctor wanted to expand slowly, so that I wouldn't have too much pain. He said that he found that most women can tolerate 60cc's at a time. I ended up begging him for double fills (120cc's) twice, in order to speed things up, and I was absolutely miserable, especially the second time. He would give me no more than 50cc's at a time after that, and I didn't feel much with those final fills.
At the very end I started taking Advil about one hour before my fills. That helped. I was afraid to take Advil before most of the fills because I was afraid that it might cause bleeding. At the very end, I chanced it because I was too afraid of the pain. You should ask your doctors, though, before you do it. I also took 0.25 mg. of Xanax, and that relaxed my muscles.
I feel so bad for all of you who are having so much pain with the expansions. Please know that the exchange surgery is easy, the relief is immediate (at least it was in my case), and it will be totally worth it in the end! Keep those thoughts in mind all the time. It will help you get through it.
I heard that some women can only tolerate 20cc's at a time. It's a drag to have the expanders in for a long time, but I would think that it's better to have tiny fills, take longer to expand, and not have the severe pain.
Good luck to all of you. Just remember......it really will be worth it in the end!
I just noticed that I'd already posted some of the same info in this thread. My memory has been the pits lately!
-
Thanks Melanie for your encouraging words, I just keep telling myself this will be over soon. Then on the other hand I keep telling myself how very lucky I am because my diagnosis could have been worse, and can accept this painful process knowing it wil just be a memory soon. Thanks again, Susan
-
Traci,
Just saw your post been sick, hows yours & everyone else pain? Since I've become allergic to about everything, heres what works for me best for both reconstruction pain (few years ago) and mets pain now. I take 2 or 4mg of dilaudid and morphine liquid for break through pain. For reconstruction pain dilaudid and ativan worked the best because ativan helps relax and dilaudid goes directly to pain without the "high antsy" feeling.
-
dpbrown,
You had a total of 350cc each and they put in 400cc Implants??????
I'm confused. Are they tight?? My ps wants to put in 200cc EXTRA before he puts in implants that will make me a small C.
I am totally confused by this.
I'm going to PM you incase you don't come back to this thread.
Thanks, Traci
ps 5 days later and I am still very, very uncomfortable. Pain pills every hour.
-
ps oops......I must have been on page 1. I gotta read all y'alls replies. Sorry.
-
ok...I just read y'alls threads.
Advil??? My pain is way worse than what Advil will handle. You girls are freaking superwomen as far as I am concerned!!
I've been on Xanax since my diagnosis. I was recently put on Wellbruton (sp?) too cuz I told my GP that I never wanted to go out with my girlfriends.
I was on Hydrocodone for the pain I was having from Taxotere but that did nothing for the expander pain.
Melanie, you made me fill a little better.....but let me ask you girls this...
I was a small B before my bi-mast. Although they called it "skin sparing" surgery, I was tight. There was no excess skin. I want to go to a small C. Right now, I have 550 cc's in. He wants to go 200 more before he puts the implants in.
What about you guys?? How big then, how big now??
Thanks for all the kind words.
Traci

pss Sorry girls......
Sociologist....I am right there with you with them being under the armpits. I asked my ps about that and he said that some women liked it that way and I said "well, I don't!!"
-
I was an a-cup on the left and a c-cup on the right because of lumpectomy for ADH 2 yrs ago. They have expanded me to a small c-cup both sides now with 600cc on August 16. I experienced some discomfort but no pain with all my fills except one when he did 100cc and not the 60 he had done pryor. I do occasionally feel like I have a tight band around my chest but I stretch and the feeling goes away.
I am not trying to be a superwoman but I guess my tolerance is higher than most due to spine surgery when I was 11.
I have been told that the pain will go away with the exchange surgery. I am going to my PS this thursday to talk exchange and possibly set the date.
Traci, I hope you can get some relief from your pain.

Hey Traci,
Before the surgery I was a "D". (I had a breast reduction 12 years ago to get down to that size. Little did I know I could've waited and nature would take care of that!). After the mast the PS did a lift on the right and now a full "C". He's going to do another revision though because it's off center (kinda like the expander) and every time I put my right arm down I hit my boob! I'm with you in that I don't want boobs under my arms; they'd make my clothes fit funnier than they do now. I went for another fill Friday (120cc) and am at 640. PS wants me at 800 to make sure he has enough to cover the implant and build me a nipple (at this point they can keep the damned nipple). I'm having the swap December 18th. As far as the pain goes, I'm definitely not superwoman...if I wasn't allergic to codeine, darvon, vicodan, percodan and oxycontin, I'd be eating those babies like M&M's!!!! Every breath I take is painful but a girl's gotta breathe! Hope you're getting some relief. Take care.

Stop making me laugh Margaret...it hurts!!
lol.....that was a funny, funny post.
Man....I can not even begin to imagine 120cc's at once.
You go girl.
Jeez Sheila...that's great for you. I'm glad you didn't go thru much pain.
Have a good nite ladies. I hope you sleep well.

I finally get the memory gel silicone implant put in Monday. The fills did not hurt me at all, he did 50cc at a time. The expanders were uncomfortable though cause they were so hard. Hope everyone is doing well and pain free now.

Hello everyone:
I just read all the posts and let me share my experience with you guys. I had a bilateral mastectomy on May 17th. I had a couple of issues with infections but nothing that some antibiotic could not cure. Then my ps punctured my right expander so I had to have it exchanged. My fills ranged between 75cc to 150 cc at the time. The weird thing was that my fill with the less cc was the most painful. My ps told me to take a muscle relaxer the night before my fill and the night of the fill and I can tell you it helped a lot. I am a sissy when it comes to pain medication (tylenol with codeine knocks me out of the world for at least 12 hours) my ps sent me to a pain management clinic to address the issues I had with the one fill that was very painful because he thought my expander was pressing on a nerve, and it was. Everytime I moved my right arm, my back got an electric jolt and so did my chest. They treated that pain with Ultram and Celebrex. I am fully filled (so he says) I go to see him on the 28th of Sept. I have 500cc's on right and 450cc's on left. They look symetrical even thought they do not have the same amount of fluid. He says this will give me a small C. I was a D when this whole nightmare started. I am glad I am getting smaller ones. I have a high pain tolerance, so I have been told, but let me tell you the pain I went through with some of the fills knocked the wind off my sail. They keep telling there is a light at the end of the tunnel and I am looking forward to that.

Traci,
I wanted to tell you ...the hysterectomy is the best thing ever!!!!! No more waisting money on all of the things we need for it. In one of my really angry pre-hyst moments I figured out I'd probably spent $15,000 on sanitary products (waaaaay too much time on my hands!). Hope your armpit boob is feeling better.
Margaret

I had my tissue expander put in at the same time as my mascetomy. The worst was getting the fills - my expander was as hard as a rock and sore. Now, at week 8, it has soften and isn't really painful at all. I don't have any more fills; I'm in the wait mode until the skin has sufficiently stretched before I have an implant put in this December.
-
Hey Ladies,
Well, my pain has subsided. However, I am suppose to go in tomorrow and get more. I don't want to. My last fill was Thurs last week and I just started feeling better yesterday.
I had my pre-op for my hysterectomy today. She was doing an EKG and she said "something must be wrong, do you feel o.k.?" and I said "I'm having a hot flash!" I guess my hot flash made the machine freak out. lol.....After it went away, my EKG was normal. I thought that was pretty funny.
Anyway, I guess tomorrow I'll decide on the fill.....I really can't imagine 4 more. But damn it......the one thing that kept a smile on my face (well, sorta) after my dx was that I was going to have decent size boobs!!! Now, if I keep being such a baby....I'm gonna end up smaller than before.
You know, I forgot to ask and forgive me if it's a stupid question but.....does everyone have their expanders under their muscles??
I hope you guys are all doing o.k.
: ) Traci
ps Margaret, I just hope I don't start growing hair on my face (more than I already have) and the hot flashes don't get worse. Also, two of my sisters who both have had hysterectomies thanks to this horrid disease cancer....complain about their sex lives after. They say sex hurts.
-
Hey Traci:
So glad to hear you're feeling better!!! Maybe you should wait a bit for your next fill. Talk to your PS and see what he thinks. Again, it's so easy for them (especially some of the male PS's) to tell us how they think we'll feel but they DO NOT get it!! Maybe think about one every few weeks instead. You've been through a lot already and now with another surgey coming up.... You have a lot on your plate right now I hate to think of you going through that pain again so soon.
I have my bilat. expanders between the muscle too. It's been almost two months since my surgery. I'm at 400cc and have one more next wk to get to 500cc which will stretch me for the exchange that's scheduled Nov.6th. I'm getting a B cup when this is over. I was previously a C before the cancer dx. I'm dreading the last fill but that's why I've saved some pain pills.
As far as the hot flashes, I've been taking Black Kohosh 3 x day for about 5 wks and I think it's finally kicking in. The hot flashes have subsided. They tried the Effexor Rx, but that was more of an anti depress. vs anxiety med. and it made me feel mentally uncomfortable so I stopped after one day.
You've been in my thoughts and prayers, as so many of these other women have been, and I'll continue hoping that things improve. We're going to get through this, it's just at different time frames. You'll look wonderful whether you decide on a B or C.
Hang in there and keep us up to date when you can.
Best wishes, hang in there!!
Katie

Traci, Your comments make me smile--and I mean that in a good way. It makes me feel better about my upcoming bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction. I have DCIS (grade 3) and I never ever want to have it return or become invasive...
-
Tracy, my ps actually started me with weekly fills then went to every 2 weeks to allow time for the muscle/skin to stretch and relax before the next fill. You might want to ask for more time between fills. And the only stupid question is the one not asked. Yes, my expanders are behind the muscle. I am at 600cc and go to the ps today and discuss exchange surgery
.
Wren, I also had bilat mast with expander recon for DCIS on June 1. Like you I did not want to give cancer a chance of returning. just a note about your upcoming surgery, get your medicine bottles with easy open caps. I had problems opening my medicine with the child-proof caps
.
