Is this menopause???Advice from those who are there
I am not on any hormonal and am letting nature take its course. I am 44 years old, and finished bilateral reconstruction in February. At night I am waking up sweating in a drenching seat. Mostly my head!!! And neck. I feel hot like the Mojave, and my trunk is as sweaty as it is when I am on the treadmill. My doctor insists that i am " Too Young" for the ovaries to be closing down shop, but she feels extreme stress for over 2 years that includes the death of family members and a job loss have screwed up all my hormones. When they did an estrogen test on me 1.5 years ago, it came back on the low end of normal.
Any advice or input? Yesterday I had these sweats during the day for the first time. Am starting to wear a uniform of tank top with jacket so I can temperature adjust as needed!!

moogie, it sure is possible than you are starting menopause. My girlfriend and a couple of her sisters started at 36! That's pretty young. The average is certainly older but it does happen for *whatever* reason. How old was your mother or aunts, etc.?
Night sweats. Yeah. That's a symptom. I'm sure there will be lots of ladies chiming in here.

What you are describing sounds like night sweats. I had a hysterectomy so was medically forced into menopause at age 38. I'm now 44 and post menopausal. Did you have any chemo? Chemo can force you into menopause also. In younger women it is usually temporary in older women it can become permanent. How are your periods? If you've had bc you want to stay away from anything that promotes estrogen replacement. Layering clothes like you are is the key. I wish I could suggest something to help but all I can say is it too shall pass!
Good luck!

Hi Moogie,
It sure sounds like you are peri-menopausal. I started that around age 48. I stayed in perimenopause until I had a total abdominal hysterectomy including ovaries and tubes last November at 49. I was dx at 49 in March of 2006 with BC. The perimenopause started with some extremely heavy periods and then light spotting for 6 weeks at a time. The hot flashes also started around the same time. I had problems with endometriosis for years and I don't know if that contributed to the early menopause. You might want to check with you gyn to confirm.
Good luck.

Sweats are part of heading into menopause or being post menopausal. Full menopause is not having a period for over one year. Lots of symptoms leading up to menopause. You may be young but I was 48 when I had my last period...induced by chemo and the oncologist told me at the time that I would be put into full menopause because of my age. She was right.
-
I was forced into menopause at 42 because of chemo. I had the night sweats, all of it. Then I started cycling again. So now I'm on this on-again off-again cycle of menopause and periods. I was in hot flash mode and menopause since Feb. when all of a sudden I started spotting. I thought about it and realized I hadn't had hot flashes in a while! So it seems I cycle through the winter months, and menopause through the summer months (for the past 2+ years). Each time I think I'm done with it, it starts up again. I'm 44 now, soon to be 45 (in Jan.) so I hope it finally comes to some kind of conclusion soon. It's rough to go through menopause time after time! But you'll survive.

Moogie, I'm sorry. Those sweats are the WORST!It definately is a menopausal symptom. But, sadly, for me, who went through natural menopause 12 years before I got bc, the hot flashes were just the beginning. They led to insomnia-who can sleep with all THAT going on??There were horrid other changes, loss of libido, loss of elasticity and natural lubrication, mood swings.A real picnic, in all.
I'm thinking these hot flashes COULD be the beginning of menopause induced by chemo and getting your system upset.
OR they could be part of a hormonal upheaval that mends itself and goes away. There is more to menopause than just the hot flashes. If the rest starts, you'll know.
In either case, not a lot you can do, and only thing to be careful about is assuming you're in menopause and not using birth control!
44 seems very young for menopause to me, who got it at 50, early because I was a smoker.
In any case, hot flashes are NOT fun. You're doing the right thing dressing in layers.
I did get pneumonia the first winter of my hot flashes/night sweats. So you can see you are doing well to dress in layers and cover and uncover according to need!
Good luck!

Night sweats and hot flashes! Are we women lucky?
I agree with Anne - it sounds like peri-menopause to me. This is the pre-menopausal period which can be short for some women or can go on for as long as 10 years for others. I was about 44 when I started. I still had periods, but they went from being regular to being totally irregular. Sometimes I'd skip 4 months, then I'd get 3 periods, each two weeks apart. This went on for almost 5 years. I used to joke that when I was feeling cranky, I never knew if I was cranky because of PMS, or if I was just cranky. I had no idea when I'd get my period.
And I did get nightsweats through that whole time (and continue to now that I've been menopausal for a couple of years). Sometimes they'd ease off for months at a time, but then they'd come back. I was lucky that I never got hot flashes, although when I'm going through a period with night sweats, usually they start up at around 7 or 8 at night. I learned to layer my bedding so that it's easy to throw everything off when I'm hot, then add back a layer at a time as I start to cool off and sometimes even feel cold from all the sweat on my body.
Another suggestion I've heard, but haven't done myself, is keeping lots of room fans and small personal fans around.

Thank you ladies for your help!
I had no chemo or anything, and all the doctors seem to pooh-pooh the whole perimenopause thing when I ask due to my age. But I personally know a few gals who started in their thirties with no medical event to kick it off. I also feel that it isn't a low grade fever, because it mostly involves my head at night. I keep picturing the Heat Miser from that christmas special with the orange flame head when I wake up at 3am!!! My new GP feels that all my hormones are wacky form stress and she will get no argument from me on that count. If nature is doing her thing I won't worry and turn up the fan with the rest of you!!!
Thanks,
Moogie

sounds like menopause to me. my chemo-induced menopause hotflashes were exactly as you've described. they've continued post-chemo and post-ooph. I can't get to a comfortable temperature at night trying to sleep..i sleep with a fan directed right at me and i kick the covers on and off all night... i've bought a small fan that sits on my desk at work. as i'm typing this, it's on high.

Moogie, I really wonder why your doctors are saying that it's not peri-menopause due to your age. The Mayo Clinic site says that the first signs of "impending menopause" usually start in one's mid-40s, but could start as early as one's mid-30s. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/perimenopause/DS00554/DSECTION=1
WebMD says that perimenopause usually starts in one's 40s: http://www.webmd.com/menopause/guide/guide-perimenopause
The U.S. Dept. of Health says that perimenopause usually starts between 45 and 55, but some women start earlier, even in their 30s: http://www.4women.gov/faq/perimenopause.htm
I looked at a few other websites as well - all of them said the same thing: perimenopause is perfectly normal for some in their mid-40s. That's when mine started, with no health event to trigger it, and my gyne told me right away that it was normal. My guess is that what you're experiencing is just the start of the good ole "change of life".

Hi Moogie:
Sorry to hear this
and my symptoms were v. similar
to Joan's above
started in my 40...'s
then, when it became worse
I took HRT.. COULD not sleep
sweating all the time
mood swings, it was awful..
after of course into the 50's
was DX... and immediately taken off HRT
I even went off it, only to go back on to it
again, due to these symptoms
Many others do not realize
the effects it has on women
Best to you
(P.S. I owe you an e mail
and am way behind) getting to mail
soon
You take care now
Sierra
PS.. I still have them -
Hi Moogie, I had an abrupt menopause after a GI infection in Egypt. My regular periods just stopped cold. I was 45. I immediately began to have hot flashes and the whole nine yards. I was always worried about cancer, so refused HRT. A lot of good it did me! haha
Now, a lot of the gals have used Efexor. It is an anti-depressive, but they found out by accident it often helps gals with hot flashes. Sure can't hurt to try.
I am fine now, I had hot flashes for 11 years, but they got better and better each year. But they do eventually go away on their own.
Hugs, Shirlann

Peri-Men symptoms started for me at age 40. I was dx w/bc at 42. I did 4 rounds of a/c chemo and that was it for me.
My last period was at 42 yo in Feb 2005. I started with 2 yrs of Tamox and am now on aromasin. I have tested post menopausal since the switch a lil over a yr ago. My gyn kept telling me I was too young to be in menopause, but I started at age 10! I mean , how many eggs can we really have. I thought 32 yrs of a really regular cycle was enough, although they disagreed.
You know your body and the blood test can tell the truth. Hot flashes and night sweats are sure signs. When you have them, you know what they are, because they are like no other feeling before.
Good luck, have them draw blood again, If you are ER+, you want that menopause and maybe some drug to stop any further hormone productions.
-
I am 46 and I started taking Tamox last fall and had the same night sweats from the waist up and hot flashes during the day. I started carrying a small fan in my pocket book to pull out at the first sign of warmth. I also have a personal fan on the shelf in my office pointed at my head to turn on whenever I feel warm. I was taken off of the Tamox after my bilat mast but still have the 'power surges' but not as frequently. I think the tamox put me into the early stages of menopause.

Hi, I just had a bilat with Diep and am experiencing night sweats/hot flashes as well. It started in the hospital right after surgery. I thought it was a side effect of surgery, but both my doctors said no. Now, I'm not so sure. Is it just coincidence that I'm going into perimenopause right after surgery or what? No chemo. Very interesting to read your message. Let me know if you've found anything else out. It's been pure terror at night since I've been recovering and don't know what's wrong with me.

ps. i'm 46 will be 47 in nov.

This is for the "newbie" that posted just above. As I said in my post, I had a severe case of King Tut's revenge, and never had another period. I was 45. I did not discuss this with any doc, but I have a feeling that any serious shock to your system, when you are at the right age, might cause you to jump into menopause. I sure have no medical training, but it happened to me and it was pretty obvious or at least I thought it was, the severe illness. It was brief, but I have never been so sick. Not much of a scientific study, just me, but I do believe that was what did it. I just toughed the symptoms out, I did not want hormones and I figured if 99.9% of the world's women, lucky enough to get to menopause ages, could survive without hormones, I could too. I have so much cancer in my family, I was afraid HRT would only make things worse. Who knows?
Oh, one more thing, the head thing sounds very much like menopause. There is a "cool pillow" sold just Google it. It is supposed to be a great help. Was not around for me.
Hugs, Shirlann
-
Thanks Shirlann,
I'll google the cool pillow and see what it's all about. I thought about being put back on the pill because my oncologist said now that I don't have breast tissue I could consider it, but I'm with you - the less stuff I'm taking the better off I'll be. I'll probably tough it out too - it sure sucks though
.

Its just really good to hear that I am not nuts and that other women have had this at my age...when all these doctors deny it due to age!! 2 GYN's, my BC doctors and myGP all made me think I was 'Just sweaty'. I'm going to get the cool pillow and thank you for the suggestion. It wakes me up at night so sleep has been crappy, but I'm not complaining.....at least this is a natural part of the aging process. I got my period at barely 12, and my mom had menopause around 46, so I think my eggs have had their day!!!!

I was really interested in what you had to say, Newbie and Shirlann. I had a very reliable, 28 day cycle before I had my mastectomy in April this year. (I turned 50 in Feb this year). Since then, my periods have gone haywire! None for 2 months, then a really light one, then none for a couple of months and the most recent one has been going for 3 weeks! Very tiresome!
Also, in the weeks after my surgery, I had occasional hot flashes - nothing too severe but they were obvious. I asked my doctor's advice the other day and she said that any big emotional or physical stress can unset your hormonal balance and, at 50, I suppose it was going to happen soon anyway. It's just interesting how suddenly this has happened and immediately after my mastectomy.

Oh I get very discouraged, so much crappy information out there. I was as regular as a clock, then the illness in Egypt, then menses just stopped. I suppose it could be for some other reason, but sure was a coincidence. Since I immediately began to have hot flashes, I just assumed it was menopause. sighhh, too bad more studies aren't done. But since menopause doesn't kill you, I actually felt better emotionally, not much incentive to finding anything out. But if docs don't know can't they just say, "I don't know?" Seems impossible for them sometimes. Siggghhhh
