The Truth About Food
Tonight on the Discovery Health channel Dr. Oz will have a show called, The Truth About Food, beginning at 8 PM eastern. I saw part of his show on Oprah today. Quite interesting. Just thought I'd mention if case you are interested.

hmmm, I just now wrote a whole 2 paragraphs, then poof off they went....
so Im giong to try again, I have a problem with deficiciencies in my body, and this coming wed i will find out which ones, then I hope i can come here and ask you guys which would be best, the real thing or a suppliment, i know the real thing is normally the best but I am soooo picky, that I wish I could just pop a pill for a meal and get a bit full.......
And as of that part of that program, dang I missed it as i was on animal planet, antoehr favorite....so if any of you saw some or part, will you let some of us who want to know a bit of what you saw and heard, I know Id love to hear some,

The only really interesting part of the show for me was about fruit smoothies (that are high in antioxidants) healed DNA damaged sperm. If it can do that, what else can high antioxidant foods do for us? The men had to drink 2 a day for 3 months.
There was a piece on do women eat more or less on dates if they're with someone they like. The answer was, they ate the same amount. I can't remember the other part. I guess it didn't interest me too much. Part 2 is coming on tonight.

I taped it because I couldn't watch all of it. Some individuals did some kind of raw diet like the apes eat. I'll have to watch it before I can comment. I've noticed here lately that posters have been asking questions about raw diet.
I'm either going to watch part 2 tonight or even tape it.

Rosemary, I love fruit smoothies. I need to make more of them. Those blueberries have so much antioxidants. I like a little banana in mine, strawberries, raspberries, whatever hits my fancy. I also like yogurt in it and sometimes some whey protein. If I wasn't so lazy I'd fix one for lunch. That's one way to get some fruits in our diet.

Don't forget to add 1 tsp of cinnamon, supposedly it helps keep the natural sugar spike we get from all the fruits down to a more acceptable level.
Those who ate all raw foods, all lowered their cholesterol by 19% in only 12 days. One guy was knocking on the diabetes door and his levels lowered down also.
Tonight's show had cabbies eating fish for its omega 3 and it lowered their stress levels. Pretty interesting show.

I worry a lot about what I eat and that stress probably causes me more harm in the long run! I try to eat organic but it is hard to find where I live. I would like to eat more fruit but am worried about the pesticides. I guess I should just eat the fruit and hope that the good outweighs the bad??? What do you all think?

The advice out there is to eat the fruit, it's more important than the pesticides which for a lot of them it can be washed off. It's just the thin skin stuff such as strawberries that should be avoided.
I buy organic frozen berries. I was lucky and just happened to look for them and bingo, there they were.

I thought blueberries were low on the list of pesticides. I also buy the frozen ones. I also use that veggie wash stuff. I know it's been said it doesn't work any better than plain water. However, it makes ME feel better. LOL Also, I forget to do this, but wash melons before cutting them.

The latest show was on dieting. It turns out that we release more fat when we eat low fat dairy products. They think it's because of the calcium in dairy. It binds to fat and is excreted. The participant in the research excreted twice the amount of fat while eating non fat dairy.
It makes me wonder then if calcium from dairy is binding to fat and being excreted, then how is it being absorbed in the bones? Or that's the reason why we absorb less than 50% of what we take in.

Cinnamon also helps lower cholesterol levels!! My dh saw a p.a. who told him this... seems his cholesterol was borderline, and the dr. wanted him to go on medication for it. But my dh won't even take an aspirin, so he asked what else he could do to lower his levels.

Harley, I had no idea cinnamon helped with cholesterol levels. Hmmmm...interesting.
I'm on Lipitor (10 mg), and I really think the fish oil that I take everyday has helped too lower my cholesterol even further. My total cholesterol was only 150 this time. However, I need to get my HDL UP and my trigycerides down. I think exercising would get my HDL up, and drinking no-sugar tea
would definitely help my triglycerides.
I know, I know ladies, you have tried to help me do without my sweet tea. I'm addicted!

Yes, I believe that fish oil helps with cholesterol levels, too. The cinnamon, we haven't really tried it for any length of time, but I was using it on my english muffins in the morning, before moving here to NC... Now I go to the Coffee shop, and have an Apple Strudel that is COVERED in SUGAR!!!! so I am definitely not being good!!

I found this recipe in a magazine I received yesterday (Women and Cancer) The recipe is called, "Immune Charger".
1cup carrot juice
1 teaspoon ginger
1/2 cup apple juice
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
It says, "clinical studies have found that ginger reduces the pain and swelling caused by osteoarthritis and has releived pain and/or swelling in 75% of arthritis patients. Apples have infection preventing abilities etc. Carrots are known as carotenoids that protect cells from environmental damage."
Sounds like a good drink ladies!!

I wonder if I can just eat the apple with the ginger on it (and add some cinnamon), eat some carrots and squeeze some fresh lemon in my SWEET tea? LOL
Harley, I'm not being good either. I've had this sweet tooth. I swear it's the Arimidex. Really, I get a craving for something sweet (and not my tea). I think I'll go have some marshmellows (with cinnamon on them and I should sprinkly some sugar on them too
).

Not for nuttin, but 1 cup of carrot juice? You might turn orange. I'm all for ginger though. I'm hooked on crystallized ginger. It's as good as dark chocolate in my book.

Rosemary, what foods to you use the crystallized ginger for?
I'm really not liking to cook anymore. I think I'll go on Nutri System for weight loss, but more for the fact that I would have to cook. JUST KIDDING!

Harley, I have to have something to blame on my "sweet tooth." I swear, I didn't used to have these cravings. I SWEAR!
While I was on chemo I think I craved Italian food when I was hungry. Tomatoey (yes that's a word..just look it up in dictionary)foods.
I didn't have my marshmellows.

The ginger is a snack thingy. Plus it helps to keep the heartburn away so I have to eat a couple of them, ok a few everyday to make sure I don't get any heartburn. Good excuse, eh?

My grocery store carries it. They have a lot of dried fruits and such. Warning, if you find it, one piece is never enough.

me too, i love those smoothies....long ago at the malls they had the orange julius....well i tried and tried to figure out what they did to them....well I like strawberry..anyway this is what I do in a blender:
I dont know how much to how much, i just eyeball it.
ice, about 1/2 blender full or less
strawberries, i use frozen from Schwanns Food people who deliver to your house, perfect strawberries and no sugar..
i through those in and a splash or two of water
and what i found out is dry milk, so i do get some calcium, as one guy long ago at the orange julius place told me...as i use to see them put some white/beige powder in it, about a tablespoon..
oh yea i put splenda in for more sweetness, and turn it on, its yummy, sometimes i throw a banana in it, those you have to drink fast so they dont turn brownish....

Since we're doing recipes, I have a tasty one.
orange juice , a few splashes
2-4 strawberries, all organic
handful of wild blueberries
4-5 blackberries and raspberries each
1 tsp of cinnamon
whey protein powder
1 tbl of tahini, not for tamoxifen users
1 -2 tbl of vanilla yogurt (optional)
I don't have to add ice because they're all frozen.
Then you'll have to eat it with a spoon because it will be thick.
I'm heavy on berries cause all 4 were researched to be cancer fighters.

Wait a minute....... Why no tahini for tamoxifen users? I love the stuff... its just ground up seseme seeds isn't it?
Here is my smoothie recipe...
1/3-1/2 cup cooked oatmeal
handfull of frozen berries
banana, or mango or apple (something to detang the berries)
yogurt (I dunno maybe 2 tablespoons)
Another nice variation is to use frozen cherries and a tsp of cocoa powder
This makes a really smooth creamy smoothie that I have been enjoying for about 2 years now

Yes, I was surprised to read that tamoxifen and seseme seeds don't mix. Supposedly they reduce the effectiveness of tamoxifen. I like the tahini and cumin powder together for their natural iron content.
I had a peach hanging around and threw that in the smoothie, that was really good too.

OBJECTIVE:: Flaxseed, the richest source of mammalian lignan precursors, enhances the tumor growth-inhibitory effect of tamoxifen while exerting no adverse effects on other estrogen-responsive tissues such as bone. Ingestion of sesame seed produces mammalian lignans comparable with flaxseed, but its anticancer potential is unknown. This study determined the interactive effects of sesame seed and tamoxifen on established MCF-7 tumor growth and bone health in ovariectomized athymic mice simulating a postmenopausal condition. DESIGN:: Mice with established MCF-7 tumors were treated for 8 weeks with (1) basal diet (negative control), (2) 10% sesame seed, (3) basal diet + tamoxifen implant, (4) 10% sesame seed + tamoxifen implant, or (5) basal diet + estrogen implant (positive control). Weekly palpable tumor size, final tumor weight, cell proliferation, and apoptosis were measured. Bone mineral content, bone mineral density, and biomechanical strength testing were performed on the femur and lumbar vertebrae. RESULTS:: Sesame seed induced regression of established tumor size similar to the negative control but tended to negate the tumor-inhibitory effect of tamoxifen, in part by reducing apoptosis. Sesame seed combined with tamoxifen induced higher bone mineral content, bone mineral density, and biomechanical strength in the femur and lumbar vertebrae than either treatment alone. A significant positive relationship was found between final tumor weight and bone strength parameters. CONCLUSIONS:: Sesame seed is not protective and negatively interferes with tamoxifen in inducing regression of established MCF-7 tumor size but beneficially interacts with tamoxifen on bone in ovariectomized athymic mice.

I love bananas in smoothies, but hate the way it turns brown. I discovered one day that a splash of lemon or lime juice stopped, or at least slowed down the browning and didn't really change the taste. I also use OJ in a lot of smoothies, and that helps keep banana and apple containing smoothies from turning brown.
