mastectomy vs. radiation

I chose to have chemotherapy with bilateral mastectomy and reconst'n (silicone implants) instead of radiation. I think that radiation would cause tissue damage and decrease the elasticity of the skin. I had Stage 1, no lymph involv't, invasive ductal cell ca. 1cm. neg. estrogen/progesterone. I was pre-menopausal at 47 y.o. I am 4 1/2yrs. since diagnosis. Still terrified of recurrence. The people I have known who didn't have mastectomies have all had recurrences or metastasis, with adequate treatment. What have your experiences been?

I also chose bilateral with recon. I was stage 1 also but larger tumor. I had 4 rounds of A/C chemo. I had Mucinous carcinoma, rare but not too agressive in nature. I know a few ladies who opted for lumpectomy with radiation and so far so good.

I am reading that stats are pretty equal, Mast vs lumpectomy/rads.

    Best wishes, Tina

I chose unilateral mastectomy, and am4 days out and still recovering. I did not want to do the grueling session and possible long term effects from the radiation

    Healing daily!Smile
