bone scan leading to more testing for me
I've been having pain in my right leg for about the past couple of weeks. At first, we thought it was just from being on my feet all day as school started and "perching" on the edge of a barstool while teaching. My onc ordered a bone scan last week to make sure all was well. It shows an "area of concern" in my right hip area. I'm now to have an MRI to get more information so that they can make a definite diagnosis or, as the P.A. told me to tell if it's just arthritis "or what."
It's so hard to move beyond when crap keeps happening. Today was NOT a good day.

Don't know why that says "edit." I didn't edit a darn thing.

MrsBee...I'm so sorry that you have to have this additional worry! You're probably really scared and I completely understand. Really, not many of us here (if any at all) will ever have another medical test and think we'll get a clear or simple result....it's always gonna be cancer in our minds.
I'm sure you'll be fine. Hang in there and try to distract yourself until you get your results. Then you can get to a rheumatologist for that arthritis!

Mrs. Bee, good luck on your scan. Like Marin, everytime I have a test, I hold my breath waiting for the results. Most of the time, they are great and I get to skip out of the office. Here's hoping the same for you!
You teach young kids. Are you sure it's not a pain in the A@@??? Kids can be that!

This is a very common site for arthritis. I'm willing to bet that is all it is. I'm sorry you have to go through it.

My MRI is tomorrow at 11:00.

Good luck, Mrs Bee.

Hi Mrs. Bee, they had me in for a bone scan and told me I lit up like a Christmas tree! I said, "What?", and they said, "well, have you had any injuries, etc?". Yes, I have had 11 broken bones, many sports injuries, horses, etc., and arthritis too. I asked them how they know one thing from another, and they said, well, we just do.
So here's hoping and praying that this is your case too. I broke my first bone when I was 3, a femur, they thought maybe I was a "fragile bone" child, but no, just a clumsy nut.
So try to remember if you have had any old injuries in that area.
Let us know, hugs, Shirlann -
Good luck.

I've never had a broken bone, and I've never had an injury in that area.
When I had the bone scan at my bc diagnosis, two years ago, I did have some areas that lit up but they ruled them out as arthritis. This area now is different and they can't tell for sure. When I had the bone scan last week, the tech doing it must have seen something, as she did an extra scan of my pelvis in case the doctor needed it. I guess he did.

Sending positive thoughts. Let us know as soon as you know results - we'll have fingers and other body parts crossed. Hope this is just some arthritis creaking around. Jo

Thinking of you, Mrs. Bee. I hope everything went well.

We just got home a short while ago. The MRI was finished at about 1:00, but we went for lunch and then stopped at a mall for me to do a little retail therapy. I didn't buy anything, but I got a sample of some hair stuff (henna bar) from the Lush store at Northpark in Dallas. We also stopped at Half-Price Books for a short while and then made a stop at Wal-Mart on the way home.
I'm really tired. I did well in the MRI, all things considered. They gave me some sedation, as I tend to be claustrophobic. Also, the tech was sweet enough to ask me if I wanted my eyes covered and I said I did. So I kept a washcloth over my eyes through the whole thing. The worst part was keeping both arms over my head for the entire test. My shoulders and arms started hurting so bad that I asked them to stop and let me rest about 2/3 of the way through. And my lower back is achey now from being still and on my back for that long.
I should find out the results by Monday, I'm hoping. I felt like I had a bunch of you guys there with me in spirit today. Wanted to smack my Dh upside the head at least once, but I refrained. He's just scared too.

Hi MrsBee,
I'm glad your test is over now. I want you to know I went thru the same thing. Leg hurt so bad I had to go to the ER. It's in a thread way back some where from a few months ago. I found out so many things can cause the pain beginning with chemo side effects. It just triggers so many things. Arthritis is another culprit. I bet it's arthritis or a pulled muscle. I will think positive for you MrsBee.
Shirlann, you gave me a smile with your post about lighting up like a Christmas tree during your scan. I'm sorry you had to have a scan but you have such a wonderful up beat way with words. I love reading your posts.

Bone scans are scary, especially when the doctors will not explain when you" light up"...they just say, oh it's arthritis, comes with your age....
I wanted to say that I had a bone scan one week at hospital in DeKalb, IL ...nothing lit up, but when I had a bone scan one week later at Rush Univ Med Ctr in Chicago, things lit up. That made me not trust a small hospital's machines very much.
I went for months wondering about "microcalcifications on lower left quadrant" thinking it was near my left ovary which had a new cyst or fibroid......and now, 4 doctors comments later, the oncologist says they are talking about your spine. (I had been rearended in a car accident the month before dr. found my pea sized lump)....Why didnt any of them say that before when they knew I was concerned?
The xray that followed the bone scan...the guy wrote i was 40 looking for neck and back pain, and i was 49 and looking for BC....
that didnt help matters any, but that hospital dept. would never reply, twice I asked for them to check on this report and I never heard anything back...needless to say I did not get my chemo at that hospital even though I would have liked to have the chemo nurse emailing perk...I was told she would email answers to anything...where I did end up going for chemo, you had to talk to answering service or wait...not much help if you didnt want to bother the poor doctor on call.

I'm going through the same thing because of pain in a rib in my back. After a recurrence scare right after chemo, where I flipped out, I decided to try a different approach. I try to attack the potential anxiety with logic by telling myself "whatever is there is already there and the test will only give me knowledge about how to deal with any problem." I also remind myself that worrying won't make me get the results any quicker or change what's already there. It's only going to make me and those around me miserable." That's worked to get me over a few other tests/biopsies and it's how I feel about this latest hurdle. If it's mets, then it's mets and I'll deal. I won't be happy about it, but I'll figure it out.
Good luck! Let us know how you make out.

I got good news! The MRI showed that I have a pulled hamstring. The pulled tendon apparently is what caused the area to light up on the bone scan.
I'm very relieved to hear this news! Knowing what it is now, I can take care of it and get back to the business of moving on.
-
great news! im happy for you!!!!!!
-
HOORAY!!! Mrs. Bee, I am so glad the test was negative! YIPPEEEE, this is wonderful news.

Great news, Mrs. Bee. Those pulled and strained things in our bodies take more time to heal than a broken bone.
