Mom diagnosed

Hello all,

I am new to the chat room and need some support. My mom was just diagnosed with DCIS. They are not certain how much of the breast is affected. There are no clear results from the mammogram, ultrasound or biopsy. The doctor wants to do a masectomy and test the whole breast. I feel like my world has been turned upside down. I know that this is usually a non-invasive form of cancer, but it is still hard to deal with. Any help or support is greatly appriciated. Thanks.

So sorry to hear the news regarding your Mom. How wonderful a daughter or son to seek information for her, and from a very informative site. DCIS is pre-invasive, meaning contained, and that is great news.

To fully understand and help you, perhaps you could tell us a little bit about her biopsy: was it of a lymph node or of a palpable lump, or thickening of the breast, or was it because of a concern on mammogram or biopsy?

I know you are scared, so worried for her. I'm sorry this has befallen your family. This site will help to answer your concerns and questions, and perhaps, even your Mom might consider turning to it for help too.

Just wanted to let you know you're great to help her so!

    Tender

My mom had a mammogram and they found an area of concern. A follow-up ultrasound was done and then a biopsy of the area. As it turns out, there is not one mass in the milk ducts. There are calcifications scattered throughout the milk ducts. The calcifications contain cancer cells. The doctors have recommended a masectomy followed by reconstructive surgery to be certain they got everything. She is really scared and upset. I don't know how to help her deal with her emotions. Thanks for all the help, support and kind words.
