My doctor just told me soy products such as tofu and soy milk were bad for me because my cancer was estrogen positive? Anyone else told to stay away from soy?

I actually just asked my oncologist the same thing on Friday.

He is originally from MD Anderson and goes to a lot of conferences.  He says this question is always raised.  Soy and flax....

He feels that taking huge supplements where the isoflavones are separated would not be recommended but he said pouring soymilk on your cereal, eating tofu, having flax over some cereal or in baked breads or muffins...that is fine.

There is no conference he has gone to that indicates actual food is dangerous.

I also read a PUBMED study that showed flax can be helpful in women whose tamoxifen has stopped working.

www.cancerrd.com ..she is a registered dietitian and a THREE time cancer survivor.  She is now 18 years in remission I think, and she eats 3 soy servings daily.

There is too much conflicting research out there about soy.  On any given day I can find info that it promotes an estrogen positive tumor to grow and on other days it doesn't.  When in doubt, do without.

I'm a tofu freak and was so disappointed when my onc said to quit the stuff. She did concede that eating tofu once or twice a month would probably be okay, so that's what I do. I've switched from soy milk to rice milk though.

My doctor told me it's ok to eat soy in moderation.  I try to avoid it however.  I'm afraid when there is no research to back up either way, so better safe than sorry.  I really miss my granola bars that have soy and flax in them.

My onc said no soy  so I follow that recommendation  it is in a lot of food if you stop and read the labels. I buy organic, and soy free foods until there is a definite yes or no better to be safe .
