Can anyone tell me how they do a bone scan and also a bone density test/scan?

My bone scan was done on a machine that slid over my whole body...totally non-invasive.  This test checks to see if there are any spots on the bone, to see if the cancer has metastasized to the bones.  This test was done before my axillary dissection (after the lumpectomy showed 1 node involved).

My bone density scan was also non-invasive...not as complex as a bone scan, this tests 2 specific areas on the body to see if there is a change in the density of the bone.  This test was done post treatment to see if the chemotherapy had done any damage to the bones.

Bone scan you just lay there and the machine moves over you slowly.  You're not in a tube like an MRI, just laying on a taqble.

My bone surveys were always just a set of x-rays.

for the bone scan you get a shot of some radioactive material about 3 hours prior to the scan - as others have said - its' very non-invasive and pretty quick.   The machine passes over you as you laying down face up.   I don't remember how long it took but it wasn't very long.  The tech was in the room the whole time the scan was going - she was watching the scan on a monitor.

The bone density scan is really easy and actually quite relaxing.   Again you lay down face up.  The tech stayed in the room for this too  - the table vibrates as the machine is measuring each spot on your body -  If I remember correctly it is 3 spots.   Quick and easy.

    Hope this helps...

Easy as pie.  You just lie there.

One thing about the bone density test....I had to slide my jeans down while my pelvis/femur areas were evaluated by the machine. Apparently the metal studs on the jeans and my belt buckle would interfere with the readings. Well, unfortunately, I also had tiny metal rings on the sides of my thong and a belly ring. They debated awhile but in the end allowed me to leave them all in/on. If you anticipate any of these issues, I'd say leave the metal stuff home.

Speaking of bone density tests; I was scheduled to have one last week. I totally skipped it because I was afraid! Not scared of the actual test....but of what it might find...mets. I know it is nothing like a bone scan (can not dx mets)...But still! My onc knows I don't like ANY tests.  I'm a nurse, so I know about the difference between bone scan and dexa scan...it's crazy, irrational, and ridiculous. I know. I had a dexa scan about 2 ago, I had my first bone scan 10 years ago(at dx) and my second one 6 years ago. Both were "clean".  Sorry to ramble...but ...what's my problem??? lol Has anyone ever had suspicion of mets from a bone scan?

Julie....Why don't you ask your question over on the mets board (I think that they're quite tolerant over there of these bouts of 'canceritis' we all get). I didn't think that mets were detected via bone density tests since they only measure the amount of mineral in the bone and, I thought, don't provide an actual picture or view. But what do I know..? Undecided
