100 Mile Kayak Race DID IT!
Last year I was the second oldest female (56) to complete the Colorado River 100 Mile Kayak Race...6 weeks later I was diagnosed with very early stage bc...did the lumpectomy and 6 weeks of rads...but was determined (despite dire predictions from drs!) to complete the race again this year. And I did it again this past weekend. Again in tandem with my personal trainer, we took almost 7 hours off our previous time. I crossed the finish line in the same baseball cap that said "I didn't come here to lose" only this year it was dotted with all my pink ribbon and bc pins and it had a whole different meaning for me. So just wanted to share...now I got 30 days off from training and then begin to get ready for the Florida 67 mile Marathon race in March 2008!

You took 7 hours off your time? What were you doing the first time? That's huge!
Sixty seven miles is going to be a cakewalk.
-
Thanks Roseg...we got a 4 hour better "push" from faster water this year...but the 3 extra hours we attributed to being in better shape, better paddlers, more endurance. The 67 miles will be harder though...in the 100 mile race we had 3 "stops," where your support team could provide you with water, hugs, food, bathroom breaks. The 67 miles will be unsupported through the Florida Everglades. Not sure I want to have ANY stops or breaks with the alligators!

So the everglades is no current? WIll it be buggy?
-
Everglades will have a strong tidal influence that we'll have to work with because you won't be able to work against it! Bugs? Oh, yeah. And let's see water mocassins, alligators, snapping turtles, no place to get out, stretch and take a "necessary" break...and did I mention, alligators? I would actually prefer to do the Yukon 460 mile race (that 5 Canadians bc survivors just did for the FIFTH year!), but my partner wants no part of cold water...so the Everglades and alligators it is!

Congrats on the 100 mile race, good luck on the 67 florida race.
I know I could not do it and I am only 47. I have enough trouble walking the NC Foothills Komen 5k in under an hour. That is coming up Oct 20.

Sheila...good luck on your walk. Actually I wouldn't be able to do your walk...both of my knees have been replaced...that why I use my upper bod! Have a great walk!!!!

Congratulations on an awesome accomplishment! What great fun and wonderful scenery you must have had. Enjoy your training and coming event in the Everglades. So cool!

What an inspiration!! You have incredible strength, fortitude and determination, not to mention being goal-oriented. Hearing a story like this is "hope". It is also living with breast cancer and remembering to live life to the fullest. Bravo!!
