    OK, will lay off and try to cook or or pre-cook for the days I know I'll be worthless.

    Rose, he did go in for a physical and blood work last fall. His numbers were pretty good - some borderlines but nothing that was way out of line.

    He works in an office - they own Pizza Hut franchises. He's on the 2nd floor which is mostly computer geeks guzzling the pop - not a lot of good role models up there!! Maybe I can find a way to get him to meet me at the Y so I will work out...he likes me to do that.

    We walk next Saturday.

    Computer guys are notorious for poor diets.

    If his vitals are good and he's not unhappy with himself then probably he's not ready to do much. If he's like my husband then he's into his work, his family is depending on him, that's his role. Adding muscle-guy to that isn't a part of this thinking.

    Plus, until a year or so ago you were busy munching away with him! Keep up your good example, maybe he'll be following along.

    I took the children to church for years, and then finally guess who started coming with us?

    Just checking in. After losing 1 1/2 lbs last week, I went up almost 3 at the beginning of the week, and am now back where I started from. This may be water weight coming and going, but I think I need to bite the bullet harder. Sigh.... And I even ended up doing 2 (!) 1-hour dragonboat practices last Sunday!

    My son who is 5'9" said his clothes were fitting him tighter last fall and he didn't like the number on the scale--but he was still looking thin and had a normal BMI. So he quit with soda and went to diet soda and water = lost 15 pounds in 6 months! Doesn't look much thinner to me--but he's not complaining about the way his clothes fit any more. Soda's really weighting a lot of us down--or up!!

    I have the same kind of hubby, except just substitute Pepsi for Mountain Dew, plus my hubby loves anything fried too. He has gained probably nearly 100 lbs since i met him (fast foods, junk foods, fried foods,litres and litres of soda). I never ask him to diet, but i shop for stuff that he might substitute for his favorites. I don't tell him this, but since i am an experimenter and creative, and he is used to that, he doesn't get too suspicious. He is, however, very very stubborn and hates change in the food arena. He has very set rules on "what food goes with what food." I kid him all the time about his "food rules" and i write them down and and keep the list for fun,and we laugh about it, but i do slip in stuff for him to taste too. So, i have gotten him to switch to diet Snapple for months instead of soda (he has since switched back--dang!) and i have gotten him to change to Kraft Salad Dressing Lite instead of his beloved mayonnaise. I can't get him to change much but every little bit counts. I am worried about his health for sure. I say, try some sort of humorous approach.

    My husband had a mother who was a fancy cook. So dinners at their house were always prepared and served by mother who arranged everything. There was no criticizing the cook in that family, which isn't such a bad thing.

    I can get away with substituting low-fat dressing or foods, because my husband seems to expect me to prepare and serve! It's the one bright spot to that particular situation.

    A few years back he read some book about food combinations and then I did hear about what you should and shouldn't eat together -- "food rules". Fortunately that didn't last very long!

    My husband used to be addicted to Mtn Dew - he was up to 5 or 6 a day. One day he walked by the vending machine and automatically reached in his pocket for change even though he wasn't going there to buy one. That's when he realized there was a problem. He only has one occassionally now.
    The only soft drink we have in the house is Diet Dr. Pepper - it really does taste like regular Dr.Pepper, just like the commercial says. We drink water during the day at work, sometime Dr.Pepper w/lunch, one glass of sweet tea w/supper and I switch to water. I agree that you and you alone are the only one who can take control of your health, weight, etc.
    It does make it difficult though, when you try to buy healthier things and your spouse buys ice cream, cookies, chips etc. Both my husband and I need to lose weight and we had that discussion again this morning. We always talk about it - got to actually getting to doing something about it. I've got 10 to 15 to lose, he needs to lose 40 to 50. Why can't losing weight be as easy as gaining it?!

    Finally went back to the Y to swim today - have not been since I started the WBR in December.

    Good news - I didn't drown
    Bad news - there were times I wanted to!!!

    Actually I was surprised at how much I could still do, I guess the stationary bike has been good for something! I can't wait until it either gets cooler so I can work out in the gym with something on my head or I get more hair. I bike at home now so I can be bald.

    Fought my way to the 169, the radiation caused me to lose my appetite and got to 165 but now have the appetite back and am at 172. Nipping it in the bud, one lap at a time!!

    I found being bald at the gym helpful. When a personal trainer wouldn't stop trying to sell me training sessions I took off my hat and told him to give me a break, I had just finished chemo.

    He backed off pretty quick .

    just started reading this thread, thought I'd see if any of you were doing better than I am or if I could learn anything from you. I was diagnosed almost 3 years ago, Friday is my cancerversary from my surgery. I've always been overweight, even as a kid. I am not at the most i have ever weighed, but close. I did gain about 20 pounds doing chemo, I think it was all of the ice cream and pudding that I ate because it helped soothe my upset stomach. A year ago I got a diet program for my palm pilot and lost about 10 pounds. Then got sick and never got back to it. I'd not gained any of the weight back till the past couple of weeks and have decided it's time to start writing it down again and really get back to serious excercising. One of the hardest parts for me is that I work in a high school cafeteria. ALL THAT FOOD!!!!! And the women I work with all eat whatever so it's hard for me to not do what they do. I'm going to do this though, I've got to. I only have 40 pounds to lose, how hard can that be?

    Lost 5.5 pounds last week. i don't think I really lost it i think it's all just in different places.

    Had a bad day yesterday and ate today so I've probably put that weight back on.  That sucks!  I am such an emotional eater.

    I have lost 34 lbs so far and am working at another 30.  I go to the gym everyday!  Watch what I eat, and it still comes off 1/2 lb to a 1 lb a week.  It is tough....chemo threw me into menapause, so the weight just doesn't come off quickly.....

    You're doing well - would be great to see your doctors face in April!!

    Made it back to the bike today - have another week of rads left but coudn't wait any longer.  Only made it 20 minutes but at least did something.  Have lost my appetite so dropping a little but that doesn't count - I know how quickly it comes back.  Was 170 this am.

    Keep up the good work, ladies!!

     I've been counting calories for the past 4 1/2 months. I'm an emotional eater, but have been really sticking to this. I'm down 33 pounds. Started off faster, but now I'm also at the 1/2 to 1 pound a week loss. I've still got another 25 pounds to go. I was shocked at how slow it comes off now.     Kate

    I am having so much trouble doing this.  I am such an emotional eater, and I just feel hungry soo often.  With my friend dying on Saturday it's been a tough week and I finally caved tonight and ate half a tub of ice cream.

    It's really significant when you recognize emotional eating.

    Like a key to a door.

    The thing about a little ice cream is that you get back on the right stuff the next day, and maybe not replinish the ice cream for awhile. It's one day at a time with all this.

    Hi,  I was on this forum about 8 months ago and someone suggested a free website where you input your daily foods and it calculated your calories... It really worked for me - as long as I used it... which was a couple of months.  Now, I can't find the website... can anyone help with this? Thanks!

    Hi,

    I don't post much but wanted to add a resource that has really helped me. Similar to fitday.com mentioned above. Myfooddiary.com.  MFD has helped me finally get back into shape. I started on 1/8/08 and have lost 12 lbs after gaining 25 post-chemo in a year. I love it and it has a good community. It costs $9/month.  I was always a weight watcher fan and have learned good habits using WW, but MFD is easier and cheaper. I think I was also just ready for something new.

    I recommend this FREE website for diet and exercise support.  I have used it for a year or so and found it very valuable.  You can plan your diet and exercise and track it all.  There is also tons of information - exercise programs, videos, recipes, forums - you name it.  I can't imagine what more you might need - and it is FREE.

    I second the recommendation for sparkpeople. It's a great site, with a lot to offer. I really like the recipes and tracking mechanisms.

    i have a question about the $50 cancellation fee. i was told that they don't have a cancellation fee, that if i don't want to go there anymore i just have to keep paying the monthly charge and not go.
