ID senator Craig :(
I was really upset about it on so many levels.
First off, the guy said he wasn't gay 3 times and seemed like if people thought that it would be WORSE than that he plead guilty to public ludeness.
Secondly, if a certain segment of the population didn't try to criminalize and moralize natural sexual orientation, people wouldn't have to have sex in bathrooms and parks under the guise of secrecy.
Thirdly, if no one else was in the bathroom, why is this even a crime?
Fourthly-- Mitt Romney, who I really dislike anyway, called the behavior disgusting--- what behavior would that be, same sex sex, public ludeness?
I HATE HATE HATE that there are people like Craig who are despise gays so much it would be awful to admit to themselves and/or others.

Amy I think he is a fool.
If he came out like Gov. McGreevy did I would respect him.
But to plead guilty then say he did that by "accident" and then continue to condemn the gay community is the worst example of hypocrisy I have ever seen.
America doesn't care if you are gay, Senator- we care that you are a liar. -
Wait a second. Why does anyone have to have sex in public bathrooms? There are places for gays to meet and greet.
I was at a park one day, sitting by the waters edge and noticed a bunch of cars in the parking lot, but no people around. About 3 weeks later, I read that the cops raided the bathroom in that park. I was sitting not too far away from it. Say if I had a male child with me and he wanted to go to the bathroom? I shudder to think of what I could have sent him into. I see no reason on this earth for anyone of any orientation to have sex in public bathrooms. -
I agree.
The Senator's crime and shame has nothing to do with sexual orientation and everything to do with moral decency. There is a time and a place for all things and solciting sex or playing footsie with a stranger in a public restroom is inappropriate in the least and possibly indecent in it's worst form.
It is a shame we live in such a homophobic world but it is a greater shame to deny who you are.
I think that the Senator owes an apology to his constituants and the gay community at large. -
I agree with you that trying to act like being gay would be "worse" than what they caught him on (and he plead guilty to) is crummy.
I think it's a crime because the bathroom is a public place, anybody is supposed to be able to go there. I keep thinking about sending my boys into restrooms at airports. Geeze, at least they know that you're not supposed to be on the floor in a public restroom!
I'm kind of mixed on whether if public attitudes were more tolerant these types wouldn't need to do this in public places. I have a feeling they might anyway.
He needs to resign now and I'm glad to see that his own party is calling for that.
Slate had a more-than-I-really-wanted-to-know description of it all .

I didn't mean that I thought sex should be legal out in the open, just that for a certain segment of gay men (not sure about women), probably more in the past before AIDS than now, it wasn't uncommon for people to meet randomly for anonymous sex-- not because they were "sleazy" but because it was "safer" to do so than come out publically. Former Governor Jim McGreevy wrote about his encounters in his book.
About 15 or 20 years ago a male couple explained it too me and I was shocked that one of the parks that was infamous for such encounters was less than a mile from my house.
Personally the idea of having sex in a bathroom (except the tub ) is gross, but apparently there are a lot of people in the mile high club LOL.
I guess what I was trying to say the USA is considered prudish compared to our European counterparts and if we didn't criminalize and condemn sex including gay sex, people probably wouldn't be doing it with random partners in public places. -
Oh, I just heard on CNN that there are unconfirmed sources saying that Craig will resign.
As much as I his "I'm not gay nor have I ever been gay" speech and his voting record, a part of me does feel sorry that he's so afraid and hateful about his own sexuality. -
I think it's pretty likely that Craig got a big dose of prudish influence when he was younger. Otherwise he wouldn't be doing this whole thing.
I agree that it's pitiful.
Apparently a mens room in one of my favorite department stores (not Bloomingdale's!) was a "hot spot" for encounters. -
OMG--- before I went back to get my masters and doctorate I was a department mgr at bloomingdales and I know that ours was a "hot spot".
-
The paper had an article speculating when "Law & Order" would have an episode based on the story, and which show would do it.
-
hello all,
While I think Sen. Craig is a hypocrite, I find it ludicrous
that someone (anyone!) can be arrested for simply doing physical movements (toe tapping,etc.). Granted, he was probably doing what he's accused of, but somehow, it just doesn't seem right that the cop assumed that he was asking for sex when no touching or verbal communication was going on. And how in the heck did the cop know Craig was looking through the stall crack from 3 feet away? I agree that it must be hell for someone to be bi or gay and be so afraid of it. I also agree that public places should not be used for sex. But there are people out there that find this a turn on. I don't understand how guys have sex with someone they just met a minute ago. When I lived in Florida, I had a lot of gay male friends. Some of their stories about them and their friends sexual encounters would make your chin drop to the floor. I understand why Craig pleaded guilty but he should have fought it, if for no other reason than any of us could be accused of soliciting just by how you approach or don't approach someone.

Does anyone watch Gay USA? It's on PBS here saturday nights at 7:00? They made a great point about the worst part of the story being the whole "sting" setting up gay men to be arrested. If their concern was public sex, they could have just as easily had a security guard outside or inside the rest room. What do you guys think?
-
First - police are trained in the habits, vernacular and signals of prostitutes, gangs, public sex, etc. Police learn how to walk the walk and talk the talk.
It was reported that there is a signal that men send to each other when in public stalls. And of course that would have to do with feet in a stall -- that seems logical to me.
Second - public gay sex became out of control way back in the 70's when all h*ll broke loose and sex anywhere anytime with anyone was the style of the time.
Remember bath houses? So sex in a bar, park, bathhouse or public restroom was not 'hiding' -- it was very open and well advertised -- and not much space left on the grass late into the evening in those parks. Cops just ignored it back then. (pink ribbon, you're just too young to remember that era - I think - you sure look like a young sweetie!)
Third - Craig's arrest isn't about gay sex.
It's about sex in public places which is outlawed in all states. No one, not two men, or two women, or a man and a woman (or a threesome or more) is allowed to have sex in public. Thank God! Can you imagine a throw down in the middle of a grocery isle? Movie theatre? Hospital waiting room?
Fourth - I don't find Craig a hypocrite. That's the media's inflammatory term to get you all excited to tune back in. That word - hypocrite - has to be taken in context of the situation.
Just as I, when a smoker, was against smoking in public places, hospitals, etc. Against minors smoking and for prosecuting those who sold cigarettes to minors and supported all laws in support of above. I signed petitions to stop smoking in public places while puffing on my cigarette.
Did that make me a hypocrite? No! I knew smoking was bad for my health and the health of others, I knew we needed to protect non smokers from the unhealthy smoke I blew all over their space and I knew I had a nasty bad habit that could kill me. I don't think that makes me a hypocrite. Just someone addicted to a very bad habit. (which I finally kicked)
I believe Craig when he says he's not gay. There is a category of men who are not gay but do engage in sex with other men and do thoroughly enjoy sex with women as well. That is not the description of a gay man.
He might just love "b**w" jobs. I work amongst the legal world and I recall a cop telling me about these little old ladies who performed oral sex in their trucks.
Call them and they'll meet you anywhere -- behind your house while the little wife is cooking your dinner, in your company parking lot during lunch break, just outside your doctors office, wherever! These women are on social security and supplementing their income with oral sex jobs.
And if it's in my town, its going on in your town too!
They use trucks so the 'john' can be high enough to look for cops. And carry cell phones to be ever ready to head out to whereever the customer is.
One of their favortie spots to meet is a car wash. Ever see a pickup backed into a car wash stall? That's whats going on. (Hmmmmmmmmm, got a husband taking the car to a car wash a lot???)
I said to the cop 'these young men are using little old gray haired ladies in their 70's or older? That turns them on?" He said 'all they see is the top of their head!" Oh OK - got it!
So maybe that's all Craig was after. That doesn't make him gay - maybe just a guy who is addicted to b**w jobs. -
Discouraging unwanted activities in restrooms is one reason places sometimes have an attendant.
I'm just as glad to see him go. I'm not that liberal but these guys who make a big deal about "right" values and "family" values and blah, blah, blah and then get caught doing stuff that they'd condemn themselves make me sick. -
Sometimes I think I live with my head in the ground like an Ostrich. Thank you Rose for posting that Slate website. So I cant believe that tapping your foot is enough to get you arrested!
What I think is of more importance is how Craig handled things after the incident. If he were really innocent and felt like he was being set up - he would never have said he was guilty.
To me, sexual orientation doesnt really mean anything. I hate to think of anyone having sex in a bathroom! How stupid can one be - to be a senator and do this in a public bathroom at the airport?
Im glad he resigned.

I think you're talking apples and oranges too. Smoking is a nasty bad habit, but gay sex isn't, even if Craig and others perceive it to be. I find the comparison disturbing.
Lots of people I know, gay and straight used the word hypocrite before it was said in the media.Quote:

A stall in a bathroom vs a grocery aisle hmmm. That's as silly to me as people saying, "if you allow gay marriage the next thing you'll see is it being legal for people to have more than one spouse or pedophiles to marry their victims."Quote:

I'm 43 what I'm not "old enough to remember" I've certainly studied about and talked to others who have had those experiences.
We'll have to agree to disagree on some of your points. I'm not sure whether or not you're lesbian, but if you're not that might color some of your opinions. -
I think the most horrifying thing about this entire story is that someone actually sits on a toilet seat in an airport bathroom!
-
The point I wanted to make is that Craig was not arrested for actually doing anything illegal. He made "motions" that are "assumed" to be soliciting gay sex in a public bathroom.
Is it illegal to tap your toes sitting in a john, maybe he had headphones on and was keeping time to the music (lol). You missed my point, which was that any of us could do something that someone else interprets to mean something other than what we intended. It doesn't really matter if Craig's intention was to solicit sex, what matters is that it is not illegal to do what he did, as far as I know. And if I'm not mistaken, even prostitutes are not arrested until money changes hands. Other than gay men and prostitutes, who else does the moral police stake out? Please understand, I am not condoning public sex. Craig pleaded guilty hoping that would be the end of it. I'm not sorry he's done politically, but I detest the way it was done. Remember, before Stonewall, gays were routinely rounded up and arrested, and I'm sure it still happens in some places. But I'm also sure some of you are too young to remember those days. Maybe a lesson in gay history is in order. It is not, for me, so important that Craig is a historical gay basher, it is the protection from overly aggressive police tactics and lack of real evidence. Do you want a stranger to interpret your moves and then arrest you?
Topo -
Well said topo
-
I don't know gay history as you say, and I think that is an important comment. I am also not a lesbian.
Your point about him being arrested for a hand motion and a tap is a good one.
When you think about it, if he was guilty, he was there looking for oral sex of some sort, according to the link from Slate.
A senator is forced to resign because he may have indicated with a tap of his foot that he wanted to engage in oral sex with someone other than his wife.
I seem to remember a political official what was engaging in oral sex with someone other than his wife in the bathroom of the Oval Office and he was not forced to resign. He is hailed as a hero.
Yes, there is a double standard here. -
Madeline and all,
According to the news reports I've read, Craig was 3 feet away from the stall when "looking through the door crack". It isn't that I don't believe he was looking for sex, it is the principle of the thing. For example, I used to work for a major newspaper in Florida. I drove for the company. They instituted drug tests which I protested. Everyone said well, if you don't use drugs then you have nothing to fear. My protest was not because I use drugs, it was because I believe in individual, constitutional rights, and in my opinion, those rights were being violated. If Americans, gay or straight, don't start standing up for our rights they are going to be completely gone someday. Oh, and one last comment. If you're in a bar and you buy someone a drink, lick your lips, and look like you're hitting on someone, should you be arrested for soliciting sex in a public place? Maybe it's not the same, because we expect that in bars and kids aren't allowed in bars. But the parallel is still there.
Topo -
Quote:
I'm a 100% supporter of gay rights but I just can't see this as a rights issue.
I see it as an indirect issue, because of the lack of acceptance from some (or many) in the public, people who are gay don't always feel comfortable coming out or living the life they were born to live. Sometimes this is because of shame, fear, self loathing or whatever. This is a large portion of the married (to women) men who exhibit the kind of public behavior that Craig plead guilty to doing.
So I guess because in our society every person isn't emotionally free to live the legal sexual life between consenting adults, they were born to leave, whether gay, straight or bisexual-- I see this as a rights issue-- although not directly since the premise doesn't go A to B it goes A to C or D . -
Nosurrender, I always like the input you have to add to our discussions. It most always makes sense to me (even if I disagree sometimes )
-
Now Craig is saying that he might not resign. I am starting to feel more empathic towards his plight, not because Craig as an individual is deserving, but because I disagree with those type stings aimed at arresting gays. If they want the alleged public sex to stop, they should post attendants, not arrest possible offenders.
-
Amy, I agree with you that these stings don't seem like the right way to prevent the use of public restrooms for sex. Whenever I hear about stings, I always wonder how they differ from entrapment which is an illegal means for the police to try to catch criminals.
I really think that this whole thing is so sad. If this guy really IS gay and, throughout his life, had to hide it and settle for sex in places like restrooms, how could it be anything but sad? I know that prejudice still exists, but I hope that most gay people today can find an environment where they can live normal, healthy lives without hiding such an important part of who they are.
And if he's not gay, what IS he....a victim of a severe case of RLS (restless leg syndrome)? I dunno. I just can't buy that he just happened to move his hands & feet in gestures that exactly replicated known signs of soliciting sex. That's just way too coincidental. And of course there's the guilty plea which he is now trying to rescind. Maybe he should just bow out as gracefully as possible..?
~Marin -
The only time I have ever had any contact with the person in the next stall over was to get some TP if my stall was out!
I agree that it's sad our society is so prudish and hung up, but this fellow is a hypocrite and I think it's better for him to be out. -
Larry Craig is doing an interview with Matt Lauer on the today show this week-- I've read it's going to be on Tuesday and also Thursday so I'm not sure which day.
I doubt I'll watch-- I hate his smarmy voice and the denials but like gaping at an accident, I just might.
I just heard that Craig was inducted into the Idaho hall of fame last night-- apparently this was decided last winter. What an irony it was the hall of fame and not shame (not for the bathroom escapades but for the lies about it).
