AnnieBird,
Hello, fellow Guinness drinker.
I too am the ideal NON candidate for cancer - vegetarian, health food nut, non-smoker, regular walker - my friend said "Shirl, this vile disease is so RANDOM!" She has helped me through two BC experiences - first 2000, second 2006.
I don't take pleasure in sunbathing (freckled) or chocolate (taste for that evaporated when went on HRT) but do have one TREAT on a daily basis - coffee and croissant in bed, looking out of my window at birds feeding on my roofed b table and beyond that to an unbroken view of fields and woods.
I have to keep saying this - this site has become SUCH a COMFORT to me. -
While reading this thread I heard my name being called by my half-full tub of old-fashioned tapioca pudding in the fridge ... and oh did that taste good. Yes, I am also not so focused any more on being as svelte as I was before. At almost five foot eleven, I was a size 10 for a very long time, then after menopause became a size 12, and now after bc it has crept up to size 14. I used to walk for exeercise, but now my knee prevents me from doing that.
Just yesterday I decided to make peace with size 14 and to gather the nice, too small clothing and donate it to a local women's shelter. Somehow that specific cause makes it possible for me to part with the stuff. Elsewhere on the forum is the thread about "de-cluttering" or :-) de-crapization ... and seeing that I just moved house and saw so much stuff that I could live without, I am inspired.
Yes, I was on hormone replacement therapy for about 7 years, loving how it kept the wrinkles at bay. At age 59 that study came out that refuted the "good-for-heart-health" benefits, and I dropped it like a hot potato. Now research is showing a drop in the numbers of menopausal women developing breast cancer, and it is stated outright that it is ascribed to the lower number of menopausal women who take hormone replacement treatment. Yes, I figure that my looking young for my age at 59 definitely had a hefty price tag :-( attached to it ... bc.
After having gone through chemo like so many of us did, is it a wonder that we now savor tastes and aromas again? Like hoghedge's croissant and coffee in bed ... LIFE smells and tastes GOOD!

I was just decluttering some pictures from my FIL's. He's been gone for a year now. When I looked at a picture of he and I sitting on my front porch swing (family get together after MIL died ) I was fat! That was before bc. Then I started losing weight and had more to go. But bc came along and got me off track (gotta blame it on something ). So, not only would it be healthy for many obvious reasons to lose weight, but more than that my vanity is telling me YOU ARE A FAT SLOB! Pictures do not lie. Now if only......

Delina,
You look so cheerful. Hope you are as happy as you seem.
Your HRT info ... oh dear, hecky thump - so that is why I managed a romantic fling at age 63, looking , so "he" told me 15 years younger. I've certainly caught up with my "real" age after ceasing the HRT and two bouts of bc - glad the "he" is not around to see me or my mutilation now.
The bc may have been my "punishment" : I am trying to get my daughter to learn a lesson from it ie NOT go on HRT. But first I have to tackle her smoking - even tho' her daddy died a nasty long-drawn out smoking-related death.
Had a good day gardening today - realised that I need not now ask my son-in-law to come round to do jobs I assumed were beyond me - lugged two paving stones across lawn - dug out a new flower bed - edged it with that mini-fencing that needs hefty blows with hammer.
May have to spend longer in bed with croissant tomorrow am.
A bientot

Shirley, please don't think of your bc as "punishment" for the HRTs!!! We do specific things because at the time they seem "right", but we can't cast blame on ourselves. Breast cancer comes for it's own reasons and I don't think we should ever "blame" ourselves for it. Sure there are "bad" things that may have contributed but we worked with information we had and sometimes didn't know that there could be negative fall out. Be good to yourself!!
I love the idea of croissants in bed...and that you are in France and doing that. A dream.....
A bientot et vous!! -

No, we should blame our gyn. Mine told me that the benefits outweigh the risks. So, like a good girl I took them so I could save my bones, heart and brain. The joke was on me...no brain saving and surely wasn't safe for the heart. Oh well, stuff happens. However, it may not have been the HRT.
Shirley
PS...I realize you were responding to the other Shirley. That part of my brain IS left. -
So as I sit here in the sun on the deck watching waves and drinking a rum runner with about a billion calories and I think to myself "what the heck"....
-
SO FUNNY.........just the other day I purchased a cheesecake for my husband and a banana cream pie for myself and daughter.....and whoever else came by. For the last year I have been so good about sweets. But that day I decided to enjoy a piece of banana cream pie. I had to give 1/2 of it away......because I would have eaten all of it during the following 7 days.......LOL.
Then I went shopping with my daughter at the Mall.....second time since beginning this breast cancer journey. I stopped by Wendy's and we both got a ROOTBEER FLOAT! Oh....MY.........have not had one of those in years!
I FEEL NO QUILT...........because I DESERVE TO ENJOY THIS PLEASURE AFTER ALL I HAVE BEEN THROUGH! And I am looking forward to more adventures too!
Love All Of You,
Terry -
I absolutely made no change on my not so healthy habbits. LOL!

I was living a pretty clean life. I had been a vegetarian from age 26 to 39, quit smoking 9 years ago, avoided the sun in my 30's (but loved it in my 20's), worked out regularly. Got BC and I guess it was unavoidable because I am BRCA 1 so I really do not think I could have done anything to prevent it except possibly having my ooph 10 years earlier.
So I am enjoying food and the sun. I am not worried about skin cancer after having BC and I am certainly not worried about wrinkles. In fact, I hope I grow old enough for lots and lots of wrinkles. -
A Shirley by any other name...is just like a rose!
And the reply applied to you as well since you did HRT's...under the best of intentions, with what you thought was the best advice and at the time, it was.
Your b.c. may not have been a result of the HRT as you said...I wonder often about prednisone..I took that at a high dose for a year, about 12 years ago. I can't help but think that my cancer and other lovely little "gems" since then, are not due to such high doses of steroid.
We will likely never "know", but we can point a finger and say "I wonder".
