Has anyone gotten health insurance for themselves after cancer? I lost my job and will only have 6 months of insurance if I pay over 500 per month, for just me. I worked for a church so there is no COBRA. If I don't do the church's insurance plan, if I can find someone who will take a chance on me, the payments will be over 1,000 per month! What is a single person to do?

Please help!

I'm sorry I'm not much help but I wanted to send hugs too.
I thought everybody can do COBRA if one had some sort of insurance. Isn't it a government thing?
I'm sure somebody with knowledge will be here soon. Hang in there.
    500 is way to much!

    God Bless

Are you sure you are not eligable for COBRA, I recently left an 8 year employer, and from the info I received if the church you worked for carried insurance on you you should be eligable for Cobra, but you have a very limited time to apply, please check it out more!!!!

Just a follow up to the previous, I really think you should be eligable for Cobra, I pay $325/month (single) that covers me with Blue Cross the same insurance my past employer had at the time I left, if they switch insurance agents they must pick me up. Also you must exhaust your Cobra and as far as I understand as long as coverage does not lapse more than 63 days when Cobra ends in 18 months you can not be refused exceptance -of coarse it will be costly. My Cobra will end in December of 08, I will start checking on insurance next June.

California has Cobra for 18 months and then Ca.Cobra for another 18 months. If you are inelegible for Cobra, then Ca.Cobra will pick you up for 36 months total. I think the cost is about 10% higher than just the Cobra. After exhausting all of this, as long as you haven't let your insurance laps, you can go to HIPPA, but I hear it's a lot more expensive. Not sure how things wook in Ohio, but maybe you could call Cobra and ask what kind of options you have if you aren't elegible with them.
